My question is:
What do Americans think of Russia as a country? Which associations do you have, when hearing "Russia"?
It's one of the hottest questions nowadays, so Mass Media always shows that Russians as mafia or simply big guys with a tommy guns or alcoholics.
And Russia is usually a country with bears walking on the streets...
So share your opinion in two or three words. Thanks

Russia is pretty cool. Has a great history, fuck huge military and has lots of cool natives. I have no complaints about the nation as it is besides perhaps the aspects of it that'd makes a developing nation.

It doesn't think, it doesn't feel, it doesn't laugh or cry..... All it does from dusk till dawn is make the soldiers die.

It's not that you can't make a topic like this especially in the general discussion place but i do wonder sometimes because i see people making an account posting something like this and then never appearing again so i wonder if you have no interest in anime or manga why would you join this site and post this topic here and not make this topic in a site for more political conversation or just a general site like facebook. If you are already a member because you are into anime and manga but just wanted to talk a little about this too with your fellow anime manga fans then it would make sense but if you simply joined for such a topic it doesn't really make sense.

modern russia...country rediscovering itself still. still a world power, still somewhat secretive :p. large net presence which is all i have really to judge by. akross and some other sites, care little for drm, copyrights or any other western legalities...or any it seems at times except their own. almost like a modern wild west er, or east as the case may be ^_^ entrepreneurs abound.

russia always seem to come back no matter what happens. ~>just launched 3 satellites at once, stealth aircraft in the works...so even after the hiccup of communism and it's fall, still showing the world what they can do.

I see. I am kind of interested in anime. I have some friends who like anime so much that I also have some information about it. I can say that Mamoru Hosoda's films are awesome.

Two or three words...lol

Well...big ass country. There three words. Seriously though, Russia has played such a large part in more recent history, as well as going further back to Novgorod/Muscovy, that so many things come to mind that it's probably not even worth listing them all out. Bears walking the streets is definately not one of them though.

On a side note, my first year of University my physics teacher was from Russia and his accent was so thick that I had a terrible time understanding him. So that's one of the first things that come to mind. =P

When I think of Russia I think of Siberian Traps (a geological event millions of years ago), and of vast wildernesses likely ruined by nuclear tests not that they were ever hospitable places due to remoteness and man the mosquitoes. I think of the Soviet Union and Stalin and I sure am glad communism went down the toilet. For all their troubles there, just look at the US today, not a lot better, just a different flavour of messed up.

Canada next to the USA likely feels about the same as Finland next to Russia. I have talked with a lot of Finns before.
While not technically anime, currently I am a big fan of Hatsune Miku.

QFT

When I think of Russia, I think of the wild mushrooms and caviar, I've had caviar including Beluga but not any wild mushrooms. I would love to travel there with an expert on mushrooms and other Russian cuisine, so I can eat some and try the other foods.

Canadian here. Not sure what the current politics in Russia is, but the latest thing I learned about Russia was Khodorkovsky by watching a trailer of his soon-to-be released documentary. The guy seems fascinating. Youngest richest man in Russia? Involved in politics? Relationship to Putin? Locked up in prison now? Some conspiracy going on here and there maybe? Exciting.

If it's the last, then I can answer.
I think it's a mysterious distant place, with a nice climate (I just love cold). People there seem to be happy, and I've met many Russians on the internet. Also, Automatic Kalashnikovs-47 are just amazing...

2 or 3 words: love the culture.

I have some Russian in me from my mother's side, so I do love the music, art, architecture, religion, and history. I want to visit there, but I don't think that's such a great idea, so maybe not (I wouldn't feel safe). ^^V

I think we need to pay attention to that country, Russia has a real dictator wannabe in Putin and unlike Iran Russia has nuclear weapons and enough military muscle to try something crazy at some point. I figure it will be Russia and China against America and the EU when WWIII comes around. Hopefully the Russian people will get tired of Putin and his friends and try and get a real democracy going. Got to keep the protests I've read about strong, if momentum is lost like happend in the Iranian protests... yeah.

Neo-Nazi's in Russia? I'm surprised they would tolerate them after WWII. Russia isn't as nice as the US or EU when it comes to freedom of speech.

As an American I think Russia's an alright country, they've had their dark past just like the U.S, Europe, and the rest of the world.

Honestly, I think most Americans don't think much about Russia, we're more concerned with China, Europe and the rest of North America.

Either way, I'm pretty neutral on Russia.

You've obviously never seen the Kremlin in person. How tragic.

---- My response ->

<3 I love Russia. I went to study in the Moscow Conservatory for a short while and I was really surprised at how much it grew on me. It's a little too cold and sometimes the people come off as rude, but once I started making friends it got a lot easier. It was seeing St. Petersburg that really changed my opinion though- it's beautiful.

I would totally go back. People don't know what they're talking about when they say Russia isn't worth visiting.

It may be the reason why their activities were quickly suppressed after the news reporting them a few years ago. But a portion of Russians may still be not welcoming immigrants.

To me Russia is the best tank of WW2 and Sputnik suggesting that Russia was sometimes better than the US even though some have trouble with that idea. The US got to the moon first, the Russians have sent a space craft to Venus first (unmanned but they still did it).

I recall the bias of the cold war, it was predictable. So often it was just plain impossible to say anything positive about Russia as it made you seem supportive of commies.

My favourite film is actually Dr Zhivago.

I know Russia is one of the biggest suppliers of oil and has a very large percentage of the worlds Billionaires.

They have a very varied climate because they span at least 4? timezones.

I know that the larger cities are facing the issues our country saw during the rise of the middle class and because of that families are struggling to stay together.

Religion has strict government oversight.

I know more about the old ussr states than Russia since a great number of refugees settled in my community.

The first things that come to mind when I hear the word Russia:

As for my opinion on Russia, I feel as though it has received less media attention in the last couple decades as it should. Russia has always been a bit of an enigma for the western world, but after the fall of the Soviet Union its as if the western media dismissed Russia as a topic of importance which is something I don't understand. It still controls a huge mass of land and commands a gigantic military force. It is also still a huge interest to NATO policy and deserves more communication with the American masses.
