| Of course their is hentai on the site, but you can't watch any of it. There are no pornographic ads or obvious explicit posts unless you look for them. Majority of sites that are forum-centric are very anonymous as if there's something to hide, I just feel it's very cold and impersonal. |

People want to stay anonymous so that trolls have nothing to get personal with (anyone can open the site and grab a random profile plus photo). The majority of MAL is in their teen years, on which they are usually told by their parents not to share such media. And there's closet anime fans, afraid of being related to anime in real life as it might seem a bit geek-ish. @metamorphius: If that's all you have to add, add nothing. |

| this isnt facebook, why would i want to have anything to do with my real life here. i dont understand why there people who think its odd that there arent more people using rl pics the site isnt about our real lives, its about the things we enjoy doing so whats the purpose of connecting them? i dont know about you but i hardly ever mention anime and stuff in my daily life, my online persona, and my RL persona a practialy differnt people so why would i use a picture of the RL me? it wouldnt even be realy applicable... and plus you can express alot about how you wish to be veiwed by what your pic is, using a real pic doesnt do that as much, it people look at it and think "oh a real pic..." |

No I think apart from the 4channers trolling and obviously trying to protect yourself from disruptive elements I think It mare has to do with ego and vanity in regards to the fact that a lot of people don't want to be associated with any form of anime related media because it has such a bad press, not to mention the fact that this is sort of a half way house between 4chan and Facebook. People act like facebook is beyond reproach but the worst kind of trolling goes on there. That place is a cesspool worse than twitter when i comes to social segregation. I've been removed from some friends profile because my comments were Not suitable for my grandparents to read Comming from a girl who posted some of the sluttiest pictures I've seen on a face book along with the good old middle finger in no less than 5 sets of photos. Which I'm sure her grandparents really appreciated. I suppose on a site like this you can reinvent yourself, you're not completely anonymous but you dont have the social stigma of trying to maintain a profile that can never change regardless and could effect your social standing if you so much as poke the wrong person. Like with many sites social or otherwise people treat it as a game, which is why mafia wars is so popular. Collect influential friends improve your social strata and life. Politics can be very enthralling which is why so many people play. But on facebook once your face is know is any shit is thrown it sticks and never comes off so making sure you dont associate with people that might reflect poorly on your social status is important because social status is everything in that game. But MAL is perhaps a more ernest site, people are more openly honest about sexuality without fear that it will be associated with their real life persona and they make friends that perhaps one day become part of a regular facebook game. Also I think the anime art in peoples profiles is a million times more interesting that seeing the actual person sipping some tea or something. But thats just a personal opinion. Lets not forget that is someone check your profile you have to grab their attention for the likes of the same anime so having an anime picture that relates to your tastes is important because otherwise how will you get to meet people who have the same tastes as you and make friends. That's what this site is primarily for along with listing anime you've seen and people come from all over the world, whereas facebook is literally your immediate social network with people you regularly see. |
| I use pictures of my favorite characters for my avatars on my profile here, on the forum, and on other forums because I like looking at my favorite characters. I actually think it'd be more cold and impersonal if people used their RL pics since I don't know any of them, whereas if they use an avatar of a character I know or like I feel instant connection to them and see that they might share similar interests with me. Plus, of course, it's nice to look at. |

| Personally, I see it as unecessary. This isn't 'social networking site where anime lovers gather'. It's a place to keep track of anime and manga, what you've watched, and to talk about it with people you enjoy. I guess that could technically qualify it as a networking site, but people aren't here to make real life connections (usually). If you think about it that way then, it would make more sense to have a picture of a character you like, or something you drew. It's not like people have pictures of themselves in their avatars/signatures on other forums either. Not that I really care either way about real life pictures, but it would make more sense to have a picture of something you enjoy. For example, think about this. You like Touhou. You could put huge letters in your profile shouting "I LIKE TOUHOU", or you could just set your profile picture to some Touhou fanart. It allows you to more easily network with people that have the same taste as you, and if you're a fan of X or Y having your profile picture set to that allows people to easily see it while you simultaneously get to express yourself. Just my 2c on the issue. |
