THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I'm starting to get annoyed with the writing. It's not that I'm against the message they're trying to put across, it's the way they're doing it. By today's standards this was not subtle enough so it just comes across as preachy. And there were other issues with the writing, for example the firing squad deciding not to shoot the hippie terrorist because Tetsuro thought she was safe. So that's what it takes to call off an execution, a child not wanting revenge? I also thought this was the cheesiest bit of dialogue I've seen in a while:

Tetsuro: I got all this oil on me after I shook Chromeria's hands.
Maetel: Yes, you did.
T: Oh, that's right. I'll go wash them. You don't like oil, after all.
M: If it's oil from people like that, I don't mind.

Strangely I don't feel like dropping the series, it has a nice feel to it despite the flaws. The music is nice and some of the plot holes are so ridiculous that it's somewhat entertaining just for that. The series showed more promise in the beginning so I hope it returns to that level at some point.

edit: Or maybe the problem is that I'm too old. Clearly this series was written for a younger audience that might not understand the message if it's too subtle. It makes me think of Robinson Crusoe: when I read that book as a child I remember it being a sort of adventure, pretty exciting. As an adult reading it again I was just struck by how blatantly Christianity and Western superiority are preached throughout the narrative. So a child wouldn't necessarily even notice being preached to in this series.

And where were Chromeria's friends when she was being executed?

Well, Tetsuro was on the aggrieved party. It's like when if injured party doesn't have any complaints against the offender and doesn't make a statement, then there isn't even any case to resolve. For example, if someone stills from you, beats or rapes you etc., but you don't make a statement, then that person won't be brought to court or held responsible. Of course there are some cases where the statement is not needed, but it really depends on the laws one country (or planet) has

If Chromeria's hands are like that, I wonder what's the situation with hygiene on Masspron?

Quite a dark world but at least the ending was a good one! Let's see what happens next though.

How to get help from Tetsuro: be an attractive woman. If Maetel had all these passes, why didn't they help the piano player instead of these terrorists.

Not sure why they couldn't just leave on another train before.

As soon as they boarded the train, I was certain they had signed their death. But they actually survived!!

Getting a little bit bored of the episodic nature of this series but I can't help but continue just to keep seeing and learning about Maetel, I find her too endearing not to watch. I personally thought this was one of the more interesting of the recent episodes.

This episode was of some special interest to me since this is an area of interest to me (industrial Japan).
When Chromeria began talking about more to life than manufacturing I automatically expected her to talk about transitioning to a postindustrial information economy...

I kinda wonder how the original audience responded to the line from the street urchin about building a hydrogen bomb.

This is obviously a commentary on 1970s Japan; Masspron, like Japan, made manufactured goods for the world; it was frequently criticized by the (not any better at all) West for its environmental degradation, as Chromeria alludes to is the case with Masspron. The execution by firing squad may be an allegory for stifling criticism of "the system." The Japanese government fought hard during the 1960s to stifle environmentalists and victims of industrial pollution, before beginning to reverse course in 1970.
Nowadays the totalitarian regime in China fills the role of world's manufacturer, has a reputation for pollution and actually does shoot people for criticizing the system.

Of course, it's not 999 until the story takes a crazy left turn, and that's when Chromeria and her comrades pull the most 1970s thing ever and pull out guns to demand a free ride. I really did expect Maetel to just blow them away at that point, but instead they get...free tickets...as others have pointed out, why does Maetel give these folks tickets and not any of the other people who've tried to steal Tetsuro's pass a ticket? I guess the answer is, she likes Chromeria, but loser-Beethoven can suck her clit lol

>Tetsuro: "He looks about the same age as me."
Are you suuure about that, Tetsuro?
>Chromeria: *Blows up building, hurts child, possibly injured a few people*
>Police: Arrest her! Don't Let her escape!
>Chromeria: What are you doing!? Stop it!
Chromeria, are you retarded?
Overall, it was another average episode. It nailed the atmosphere as usual, but the writing was not very good. I agree with some of Chromeria's ideals, like antipollution and antioverindustrialization, but I can't sympathize with someone who commits acts of terrorism against civilians. Tetssuro looked so pitiful laying there on the ground with that sad face. This series has tried to force sadness so many times, and this is one of the only episodes that actually made me feel bad, so I appreciate that.
Also
I love the Conductor. He's great.

Maetel is very interesting for sure.

This is something I've always wondered about too.
Semi-related: I used to have these links to old forums in the 90s that talked about subbing anime. Galaxy Express was apparently fairly popular for "retro-anime" fans back then. To them, this anime was about as old as Cowboy Bebop is to us. I wish the internet was older so maybe we could see what people in the 70s thought of this show.

Some people don't realize how bad it is in China. There's plenty of good documentaries on Youtube. If anyone comes across this post and is interested this is a good one:

Luckily, Japan has gotten a lot better about this sort of thing. The attitude of the people there is very good too. They want to help their country. I wish the attitude of Americans would change. If I had a quarter for every empty bag of chips or cigarettes I've picked up after someone else, you know what I mean.
My state uses prisoners to clean up litter, which is a good thing to me, but I wish people wouldn't litter in the first place. This attitude of laziness and selfishness is going to kill us.
EDIT:
Updated signature because Tinypic is shutting down.

Maetel casually pulling out some special multi-use tickets. F to all folks who weren't as fortunate to end up on Maetel's good side.

Chromeria really loves its planet, but struggles to make people environmentally aware that overproduction affects the ecosystem. Work is a tool for universal transformation, but it has its burdens. It is very good to see that a show that is more than 40 years old portrays this very current theme...

I honestly think that defending Chromeria is a bit strange. Like, she destroyed a building and could have hurt Tetsurou and Maetel, yet... the show chose not to fix that event.

All these episodes where Tetsuro lost his ticket were absolutely retarded given that Maetel can throw them around like candy if she wants (which she does rarely). Whats the Point of not giving Tetsuro, a fucking child, some of those instead of letting him fight for his life to retreive his pass? Maetels style of parenting is quite harsh.

That was a dirty planet. How exactly would oil and gas still be used that far into the future? Perhaps at the time of this anime's release, the idea of clean, efficient factories were unheard of. Oil just plain shouldn't exist, and I hope that I live to see a day where oil is no longer an important or needed commodity.
