Which way do you use to keep up with current events? Are you only aware of events people happen to talk about on social media? Do you read any news websites? Or maybe some of you still watch the news on TV? Or are you not doing any of that and just don’t really try to keep up with current events? Which is it?

These days mainly through YouTubers. Scrolling through places like twitter and hundreds of different news websites myself sounds like a miserable experience so yeah I get all my updates about what's going on in the world from YouTube or sometimes Twitch

This is a topic I've struggled with a lot. I used to heavily be addicted to social media, like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook(yes, I live in SEA, where it's still very popular). Now though, I've completely deleted my Instagram account, deactivated my Facebook, use Unhook to watch YouTube, and unfollowed a bunch of unnecessary accounts on Twitter(I only really follow artists now). When it comes to news, I honestly try to avoid it lol. Maybe it's me being ignorant, but especially nowadays, you can't keep up with everything. In reality you don't need to. I feel like when it's a real important current event; I'll find out about it in someway anyway. It could be through small talk or I just happen to see a video thumbnail about that topic. I feel like I'd rather have a healthy mental state, than having to know everything about the latest big news. It's a slow process... because as I mentioned I genuinely was obsessed not too long ago, and I think a lot of people can relate to that problem.

What's wrong with VK?
Most of the people I watched are banned from YouTube and its "normal social standards".

Also, if something requires a VPN, I just don't use it then; it's a waste of time and effort for me.

Can' sleep. I'll answer.

It depends on the region.

World news overall and for general understanding: a news-oriented multi-lingual Discord server that I'm in.

Quebec specifically: My mother and cousins. I don't ever want to hear any news from Parliament Hill with those f**kers in the both houses or even something remotely British.

China specifically: Global Times in Chinese or English, China Daily as well. My uncle sometimes gives me some screenshots from Tuanjie Bao, the organ newspaper of the RCCK, for quality low-key sarcasm. And I get additional news from my co-workers for 1 of my workplaces, AKA my cousins.

South Korea specifically: Using the Daum web portal's news section, some YouTube pundit channels, and Twitter.

Japan specifically: Same as how I find news in South Korea, but with the inclusion of a Twitter bot I use.

North Korea: Chosŏn Sinbo, but now using a VPN to access it. Thank you very much, Japanese police and financial authorities, for protecting the rights of North Korean-affiliated residents (including ethnically Japanese women who severed ties with their own birth families to be with their Korean husbands) in Japan.

Russia specifically: Russian News Agency TASS (Информационное агентство России ТАСС) in English or for my reading practice, Russian.

Other parts of Europe except for the UK specifically: Gulf News or Global Times. I don't like the EU-imposed censorship that is way much worse than what the Japanese government is doing these days, so better use Chinese or Arab sources.

The Philippines: my business partner.

@Exhumatika Well i mean, VK is FSB's social network...

However, if you like using it, then of course i have no complaints, thats fair.

I just cant quite imagine how somebody can live without a VPN in 2025, and btw this probably already applies to most countries in the world.

But if you ok with it then i have no complaints.

So, you're thinking that you feel more "safe" by using a foreign source?

If you are doing something that some «top tiers» don't like, or "sat on someone's face", they'll get you either way (and not just in this country).

Does VK even allow news sources and content creators critical of Putin? Say what you want about YouTube but you can find plenty of critical coverage of any administration, from JRE talking about the Epstein files to F.D. Signifier talking about the follies of increased policing.

I read news every day. I like Reuters the most and since so much news of other websites comes from AP and Reuters anyway, I think it makes sense to read it straight from the source. But I read non western news outlets as well. I also follow a couple mappers on Telegram and check the Deepstate map from time to time but Deepstate has been shit for a while unfortunately.

A lot of people say they dont have time to read news and then they go watch a gayming youtuber or instagram reels about the news anyway. Except they get the most ideologically twisted version possible

Easy! By using conventional social media. While I do thank conventional social media for reporting that woke fundraiser Patreon's recent antics like violating hentai art (their makers too), their true liberal colors and location (from the progressive dystopian city of San Francisco where your average credit card companies are at still infected with the woke mind virus) are already clear to me.

Still, I thank the internet for pointing me to Subscribestar if I'm gonna need a fundraiser for making profit out of true grown up art.

Libtards must be absolutely retarded for taking decades to distinguish regular pornography (on the surface web which is its home or base) from irregular creepy shit (featuring minors, child abuse and grooming) on the deep web.

Some evolutionary breakthrough for libtards (How can they fly if they can't think swiftly? So happy to see them go the way of a dodo bird which couldn't fly or think at the speed of light). Thanks for informing social media!

Different ways: watching the news on ServusTV online media center, looking up stuff on Google news and clicking on various mostly main stream English and German news sites, using the RT app, some alternative news blogs, some regional websites for regional news, police reports, radio news and some person gesturing and mimicking the news

It depends on which current events are being referred to. Generally I like to have a mixture of intake of news in terms of domestic (for me, U.S.) and foreign nationality outlets (Indian, Russian, Chinese, British, French, German, Japanese, Iranian, Saudi, Turkish, Lebanese, Hungarian, Venezuelan, etc.), private/corporate outlets, state-run/public ones, and smaller "independent" ones. And through various mediums like internet, television, radio, and admittedly increasingly rarely these days, printed press/printed page like newspaper.

But I don't follow most events either domestically or internationally in anywhere near the depth that I used to. For example, I followed multiple MENA region conflicts every single day for multiple hours virtually every day from 2011 - 2020. For nine years. And when, after a brief respite and semi-frozen conflict with the events of 2013 - 2015, Ukraine flared up again in 2022, I followed that pretty closely as well and still partially do, although not to the extent of knowing the name of and instance of every single individual tiny village or hamlet changing hands via geolocation and primary sources as I did for, say, the Syrian war.

But I would say I dialed it back to an extent compared to earlier days for three reasons.

1.) When I got sick in 2020, I had to dial my energy back in a lot of spheres

2.) Some of the energy I channeled into it I started channeling more and more into other new hobbies which would become my new obsessions and take up a lot of time, like mainly anime since 2019

3.) In the past I held more idealist ideologies before arriving at a postmodernist outlook. Now, I still am sympathetic to one side or another in those various conflicts and situations around the planet, mainly still in line with the views and positions I always held, but I honestly don't care as much for the ultimate outcome anymore because in each case the side in question is only marginally superior and preferable to the other.

Mostly I just want the world to continue to remain as divided/fractured and multipolar as possible to prevent the ascendancy of any one tribe or ideological clique. I'll tacitly support whatever furthers that end, but all states are basically organized criminal groups with a monopoly on violence and I'm tired and weary after years of listening to and hearing so much of the baseless, relentless, mindless propaganda pushed from all sides and subscribed to with a blind tribalistic equivalent of religious fervor. I've abandoned desire years ago to get in lengthy many hour, multi-day or multi-week long extensive debates online with propagandized people.

True believers in either of the neoliberal-capitalist revolving door parties on either side of the fluff partisan divide in this country, or in any of them in any Western or Western-adjacent/satellite country, or true believers in the U.S.-led Western bloc/EU/NATO or Russia or China honestly all deserve each other at this point. They're all trumped up street gangs with nukes. I'll back whichever side is further away from taking over the entire neighborhood in any given context/situation to best preserve balance of power.

Pretty much this. If there's one mistake I've made in my 20s, it's that I let things that were going on in the outside world that I have little to no control over bother me/stress me out too much, so I for the most part stopped caring about current events. And in the very few times that it was something that affected me I've always found ways to adapt.

I am not on conventional social media so I tend to find things out by checking the mainstream news websites, or simply by hearing it on the radio or by word of mouth. I tend to find that some things are just so impactful that you will learn about it one way or another eventually.

I do my daily tour of NATO propaganda sites and BRICS propaganda sites, average it out, form my own opinion on the current state of the world, then laugh at people like @Exhumatika who willingly swallow only one side of that shit and think they hold the truth and act all high and mighty about it.

The side effect of this is that I have a terrible opinion of pretty much every country.

edit: It also means that I have to suffer through Hindustan Times and Fox News articles sometimes, which is never fun. At least Rossiya 1's shit is entertaining, even if somewhat repetitive.

@fleurbleue What I gathered is that you're pretty much in the same situation than France. Giving too much to the ultra rich, trying to patch the holes this makes in the budget by strangling the poor, the middle class and retired folks, free healthcare but terrible access to it, cost of housing skyrocketing, would probably benefit from regulating immigration more until internal problems are fixed.

We always go back to that one simple fix: eat the rich (before they eat you (they're planning to))

@Exhumatika Believe it or not, "banned" does not mean the same thing in a democratic shithole than it means in an authoritarian shithole. It's very easy to find Rossiya 1or RT propaganda here, no VPN needed. And nobody's going to jail me for that. Hell, I can find Soloviev rewriting history and rambling about nuking London, Warsaw, Washington DC and the baltics on Youtube in two clicks (why does he always forget Paris? I feel kinda offended).

That's honestly pretty spot on, though some places in the country have it worse than others. For example, housing is especially terrible in British Columbia, and Ontario is saturated with Indian immigrants. We have the Canada–Québec Accord here in Quebec, which gives us some powers over immigration, so it helps us prioritize French speakers and skilled workers, and we also decide our own immigration threshold. All other provinces have less say on immigration (…and Quebec has often been labeled as racist for being so nitpicky about immigration).
