| Wow, the music was so amazing. The art and animation were fantastic. The voice acting was better than I expected it to be. I was very surprised at what they changed, but overall they adapted the important parts well. I and many other people in the theater cried during it. I can't quite tell if they're gonna make another movie. Interestingly enough, Dai didn't even feel like the main character. Sometimes I felt it being Tamada or Yukinori. It basically focused on all 3 of them rather well though, I just couldn't really pinpoint a protagonist. I have some gripes with the movie, for example, I was not really a fan of the CGI (Think of it like Slam Dunk's movie) but they didn't use it too much or for too long, but I still didn't like it. I think they did pretty well with establishing the friendship between Dai, Sawabe, and Tamada. This could be me being nitpicky, but there were some scenes here and there that I wonder would make sense to non-manga readers as some relationships weren't really established or built up enough to feel the impact you felt while reading the manga. However, overall, it is 100% worth watching just for the music performances alone. I think I am gonna rewatch it in a Dolby screening room next! I can't even begin to imagine how it will sound! | Literally on my way home from watching it now. (I cried too) I'm living in Miyagi right now, so it stung a bit that all the stuff with Dai's back story (set in Sendai) got cut, but I understand that it would've been impossible to fit everything into one movie... That said I think the pacing was excellent given what they cut, and it goes without saying that the music was top-class. The CGI... wasn't good at all, and the first few scenes where they used it really took me out of the movie, but by the end I got used to it. I think the frankly incredible animation we got, in the last performance specifically, more than made up for the janky CGI however. I'm not too sure about the experience for someone who doesn't know the source material, so I can't comment on that. And it's been a while since I read the manga so I can't really remember if some of the stuff was new or not, but I'll definitely be watching it again in the future. Definitely a film you should first watch in the cinema if you can though. |

| I'm not sure what else you want to know about it? I wrote it in a way so that people who don't want to be spoiled too much could get an idea of how the CGI looked if you just quickly looked up the trailer for Slam Dunk. It's pretty obvious from the trailers that the CGI was used in performances. That's basically it; it wasn't used anywhere else. |
| Overall, it was an excellent movie, but as many people said, the CG was rough. These scenes definitely took me out of these moments. However, the times they used 2D during the performances looked pretty amazing. Also, that specific scene at the end hit me like a truck (heh). That was unexpected, most of the people gasped at that scene (me included). Besides that, the story itself wasn't mind-blowing but it did its job. Kinda wish we had an extra 5 min at the end instead of a cut-off right after the end of the performance. (I heard there's an after-credit scene but I didn't know about that so I didn't see it sadly.) I'd give it an 8.5 out of 10. (I'm feeling generous so I'll give it a 9 on MAL tho) |

| I've been gunning to watch this since announcements last year. It was truly a captivating experience, it felt more laid back in the first half as they're getting their shit together then I would've expected; I haven't touched the manga yet so I'm curious what they adapted in those 10 volumes but I'm betting it would've done better as a series then a movie. Tachikawa directing was not lost on me, especially during the artsy renditions of the music playing and burning into their souls. CLASSIC. But there was a few other scenes that were immaculately shot. I'll say this much though, the three guys their bond and friendship was probably the most authentic and emotional care I've seen amongst male characters like this and each of their individual journeys was great. Yes Dai is the BLUE GIANT but I was really tearing up anytime Tamada was having realizations of his growth, everyone was. Yukinori might have a snob attitude for a bit but he really cares so when the car accident happened, I was floored, like it shouldn't have but MY GOD. My entire theater was choking! I don't have an ear for music so a lot of the early performances I was like "is this good, is this bad???" yet the duo performance was so banger and the last song was truly a stellar encore. I really need to listen to this OST. Yeah a lot of the 3D was jank, even in the scenes where it was pretty solid caught my eye in a way it probably shouldn't but I'm not gonna be too too harsh; I just hope this get better as CGI progresses in the anime industry. I intend to read the manga and then return to this after finishing, so for now I'll give it a solid 8 but I wouldn't be shocked if it goes to a 9 when I watch it later. |

| ngl i was a little bit wary about the 2 hour run-time at first, but it was really good and didn't feel like it was dragging on at any point. any time I would think about checking the time, a new song would come on and the performances are just so beautifully animated and the songs are so good it immediately pulls you back in. also i feel like it's harder to show the emotions that go into something like playing music, as opposed to a fight scene, or a match in a sports anime- but they did it extremely well. that sequence at the end was crazyyyyyyyyyyy... also, i normally dont really like the 3d/hyperrealistic animation style, however, i feel like it was was used specifically to enhance the scenes where they are performing, and each one was so beautiful that I didn't mind at all. idk what else to say, soundtrack is fireeeeee ^-^ |

| Saw this in the theatre today and while there are definite flaws with the movie, this was easily the most fun I've had watching an anime movie since the 2nd Heaven's Feel Movie a bunch of years ago as well as the Saekano movie. The performances did have awkward CG at times which looked rough but the key sequences that oozed the hot, intense and passionate expressiveness that jazz is known and beloved for were on full display in various sequences in this movie. The manga art did a good job by showcasing it through drawing but with the medium of anime and the brilliance of Yuzuru Tachikawa, they went full on with those and the music almost melted the visuals into trippy, steamy vibes like a fever dream and it looked gorgeous. Having the excellent music accompany that was easily the most interested I've been in a cinema in a long time. People surrounding me had a lot of fun too watching this so it was great. You can just feel the progression of characters through the expressions and performances, especially with Tamada. The plot itself was simple but very good, even if there were cuts for the first few volumes at the start to make this work as a movie, and the pacing feeling a little quick because of the various events, developments and performances to cover (although that was also a refreshing element too since the plot never got stagnant and developments still felt earned). If there was more time, covering a bit more of Tamada's growth in montages or Yukinori coming out of his slump would have been better but hey, it was still good content and I enjoyed myself. There was one cheesy event I was mixed on (even in the manga) with the twist of what happened to Yukinori but the anime made that moment feel so out of the blue and sudden and everyone around me gasped so it worked well. The sudden nature of it was so greatly executed rather than prolonging it with a very long sequence. Hell, at least he got up enough to do his final performance with JASS before he has to go recover and it was great. Dai was a simple character but had enough charm to him to work, and he was really the star of the movie with his performances. Shame the group broke up but a talent like him has to move forward even if the Yukinori event was a lil convenient story-wise. Also, it is refreshing to see a movie plot with no sideplot/romance stuff just forced into the movie just for the sake of it. Having the movie focus on the journey of the main trio and their jazz band and solely that felt really refreshing to watch. Feel like the romance element in a lot of movies just don't need to be there when the story has so much potential with everything else and when it is not a romance-focused movie, so the music focus was appreciated. No distractions. Overall, can't say that the movie is completely flawless and the manga is better story-wise but the anime solely with the music compositions and expressive performances (especially during the peak moments and solos) made the movie feel truly special despite the shortcomings. If there was more consistency visually and the pacing was a little better and smoother, this would've been close to the best anime movie I've seen (especially standalone and not a series-based movie like anything from Kara no Kyoukai). But damn was this a lot of fun and I haven't said that about a movie in theatres in a while so it feels good. I'll take a movie for Supreme in the future if that is in the works later on. A strong 8/10. I have been taking a jazz bird course in university too so the timing was surprisingly great. Got to see a lot of cool references and little details, and even learned more about the emotions of jazz poured into their performances that would be helpful to understand in the course too. Edit: Upgraded it to a 9. Been reflecting on the movie and those performances are still stuck in my head. |

| i was so surprised how impactful this movie was! i was a little worried that this movie was gonna revolve around Jazz because i'm not super knowledgeable about it; all i can tell you is what i like when i hear it. so when the initial music stuff started coming in, i couldn't tell if i liked it or not hahaha :3 it wasn't until Tamada kept time for Dai with a stick and a coke can that i started to dig it. and then after that, when they form JASS......PSHOOOO! i went on a musical rocket ride! again, i'm not knowledgeable enough to know what's good and what's not. that's why i especially love that part where the guy is questioning Dai on what kind of Jazz they play. hahaha that killed me! there's no way i'd be able to answer that question! but Dai's answer was so bad ass and it made me feel Dai's passion for the music. and i feel that the music JASS played conveyed that passion wholeheartedly. i loved it. Tamada ended up being my favorite character :D watching him learn to play drums from nothing while hanging out with two superstars, i felt his struggle. but i really loved everyone. Dai, Yukinori, i loved them too. oh man..... Yukinori's accident fucked me up! i gasped in the theater. i was completely unprepared for that. and then after it happened, i thought "things were going too well. you should've known better" hahaha. Yukinori ditching the hospital to play with Dai and Tamada at SoBlue was fucking awesome! when he looked at his uninjured hand in the hospital, that's what i was hoping in my heart he would do :') even all the secondary characters, i loved watching them love JASS' music :D this move was a unexpected home run! i'm so glad i didn't sleep on this one (cause i knew i'd have to trade in some sleep to watch it hahaha). i never get tired of saying that movie theaters are the best way to watch anime XD XD XD the volume for the music (especially the final song) was loud! it was fucking awesome to get blasted with all that sound while also getting blasted visually by the fantastically animated performance (excluding the CG stuff). bummer that it got such a limited release, but oh well. i remember reading the announcement for the theatrical release of Giant Blue and wondering it was gonna make it over to the United States cause it didn't seem like something that had the ingredients for mainstream success. i so glad it did and i'm so glad i got to watch it in a room full of people with a giant screen and bitchin' sound system :') |
| Assuming they cut content was actually the time that Dai was in his hometown and teased and the performance scenes showing his journey to Tokyo, which makes sense since the real meat of the story is his journey with his friend and roommate Tamada and Yukinori and attempting to go from nobodies to somebody's. Really awesome anime covering the story in full and really spicing things up with awesome original songs, N.E.W is easily the best and it was nice to see other folks in the theater get into the songs just like the characters did at the various venues. The emotions were high the whole film and I just found myself cheering them all on, Yukinori to break through his wall, Dai to show the naysayers his jazz, and Tamada to show even a beginner can grow with practice, time, and a spark of talent here and there (loved how he had a fan, I cried) I really hope this gets a blu ray disc here, would be one I rewatch as the music and performance make it worth it as well as the story. I know the very present 3DCG motion cap, may be controversial but it'd be challenging to probably hand draw how they did every performance every time (though they did break out the hand drawings to show character emotions and at key parts of the musical numbers). | Watched this two days ago at the theaters, and I went in thinking I'd enjoy it, and that's it, but came out crying. I knew the manga was rated highly, but I still had some doubts when the first scene had Dai switching his reed, and he didn't even wet it before putting it on the mouthpiece. It's a negligible detail I suppose, lol. I really appreciate that this was a story about how much each of them loved music and playing together. Idk about the manga, but in the movie, it seemed like none of them came from a family with any problems, which meant we could focus solely on the characters themselves and their goal. I loved all three characters, and while there wasn't a moment where I needed to cry for Dai, it doesn't mean I didn't like him any less. Every time he was asked, "Why jazz?" it was great to see him give the same unwavering answer, and his sound definitely reflected that. I'm always awed at people who can spend so much time on something they love. Which leads me to Tamada, who I didn't realize would be a central character to the story when he was first introduced. When he fell in love with drumming and playing together with Dai and Yukinori, and then struggled with keeping up, I cried for him. I liked his attitude, that he wanted to try playing with them, and even though he was told that he wasn't at a good level yet, he cried, but still resolved to improve. Really happy that Dai didn't extinguish Tamada's flame, and that Yukinori was soft-hearted in the end. It was so touching when the tofu shop man told Tamada that he loved seeing Tamada's growth, honestly crying just thinking about it again. There's nothing like having your efforts being recognized. As for Yukinori...the first time we saw him at his part-time job, I was already worried because his work entailed being close to driving cars...then we got to see it another time (or two?), and when nothing happened, I was relieved, thinking, okay, the mangaka was not going to do what I thought they would BUT THEN THE LAST TIME. It was such a peaceful moment, so when it happened, it was a huge shock. There weren't that many people in my theater, but I heard many audible gasps, and even one person going, "No way???" As much I didn't want this trope to happen, it really made the last two performances at SoBlue just that much more emotional and impactful. Yukinori from his first introduction seemed to me to be a bit haughty, I mean not exactly, but he's aware of his skills and won't settle for a sound that he doesn't approve of. Of course I realized that he's not really haughty, and I came to like him. But wow, his first reaction when he saw his broken hand and arm was to ask for his cellphone in order to call Dai, to apologize to Dai that he can't make it to the performance. That hit me so hard. The two performances at SoBlue was so emotionally charged. I was really happy that the store manager(?) made it happen, to allow a tenor sax and drum duo to perform without a pianist. Without the piano, their sound was so raw, and I cried once again for Tamada with his solo. Then Yukinori appeared, with his light attitude, but then saying that after the next performance, JASS is disbanded, I couldn't stop crying for the rest of the movie. Even with just his left hand, their music was amazing. I also loved seeing everyone in the audience, those who have watched their growth and those who have supported them, such as the MVP, Akiko-san. I know I've said that I cried so many times already, but that brief after credit scene destroyed me, when Dai told Yukinori that he was Yukinori's number 1 fan, that he loves Yukinori's music, ahhhhh. I'm honestly surprised at how well the story flowed given that it adapted the whole manga??? Incredible. And the Tachikawa Yuzuru's direction is just top tier (not surprised after what he did with Mob Psycho). Please give this guy more directorial works. The amount of creativity in the 2D scenes really sucked you into the performance, into a different world! There's probably more that I want to say, but it's really just ramblings. I'm so glad to have watched this in the theaters due to the immersive experience. |
| Saw it a few days ago at the theater. It was good fun, passionate and intense. That's right, Dai's description of Jazz kinda accurately describes how I feel about the movie. The story moved briskly and I really enjoyed seeing each of the three characters play their own music. Honestly, my only gripe with this movie is the Truck-kun portion for Yukinori which kinda came out of nowhere. It kinda felt like it was put there just to introduce some last minute drama but it certainly made the final performance stunning. 8/10 |

| Tragic movie. I didn't really like Jazz that much but watching this made me appreciate it a bit more. The CGI wasn't bad. It's mostly concerning in the performances but I can't hate it nor dislike it for this series. It's still stunningly detailed. The characters were truthfully entertaining, even the supporting characters have their own qualities. I almost shipped Yuki's childhood friend to him. 😅 For a series based on 10 volumes, IDK, as I didn't read the source but it was a worthwhile series nonetheless. Their friendship, relationship to other people, and their modesty towards people was certainly 👍. Thank you for creating an inspiring series like this in the form of music. |
| It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it, is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service. |

| Honestly, I expected better from this. First of all, CGI in music anime should be illegal, it instantly takes you out from the performance, which is supposed to be amazing, but it's not. They really did an outstanding job with visuals using interesting angle shots and creative colour choices, but then they switch to a shot with CGi in it, and ugh, why. Then they did Yukinori character dirty. I mean, singling him out like that to humble him and poke fingers, it came almost out of nowhere, and then the issue is brushed under the rug like it wasn't even there. He showed some character growth, yeah, but it felt somewhat forced. Then, they did Yukinori character dirty. Again. Like, why?! WTF. I do enjoy some drama and tragedy and can appreciate a carefully crafted emotional ride that makes your heart beat for the characters, but here it only had a truly shocking effect. Again, came out of nowhere, and felt extremely forced. The music was great, I guess. |

| This is worth the watch for the animation during their performances alone. A lot of really creative and sparkling and abstract visuals going on there that complements the jazz music very well, but the CGI stuck out like a sore thumb in comparison and I'll admit I wasn't as hooked on this movie as I was expecting to be. The story feels very familiar and I knew what to expect from the beginning, so it would've been great if the story was more engaging. Even when the "twist" happened at the end there it didn't feel very impactful and still felt formulaic. EDIT: I was surprised that Shunji was involved with the story as more than Dai's roommate. Didn't expect him to be part of the jazz activities, but it was nice seeing a newbie musician and the time dedicated to learning the drums - even though the future snippet reveals that he only played for a year and a half, which was also a surprise. 2ND EDIT: Also could not take their band name seriously. I thought it was joke when "Jass" got brought up, but then they immediately went with the name and treated it so seriously that I couldn't help but laugh. |
