I want to start with my criticism over Luffy’s ten minute nerf after using gear 4. I don’t think I was ever clear enough with this and don’t just want to fling terms such as ‘contrived’ or ‘artificial’ at it. What I mean by being annoyed when it comes to this, more bothered than most decisions in One Piece that have annoyed me, is that it kills the excitement of a fight. This is One Piece, it’s not the most subversive story ever, we know Luffy will typically win the fights and we can predict their outcomes even if we don’t understand how he will get there. Yet, introducing this mechanic which my friend compared to ‘charging ki’ is such a clear way to predict everything about Luffy’s fights. Luffy will struggle, get tired, wait exactly 10 minutes which is quite cheesy in itself, then wake up and win the fight after being saved and out of commission to build really artificial tension. The question of ‘how will the fight go’ is diminished further. If Oda does something interesting with this mechanic, I’ll eat these words, I just find it to be a huge pet peeve at the moment.
At least Nami did show her cruelty, guts, and loyalty as she saved Luffy, and we got some good Carrot and Chopper stuff too. That is, we saw Duval the 2nd, another ugly Sanji look alike, and then they overheard the news of where Sanji is located all while being chased by an enemy in her own territory, with shackles on slowing their movement at that. This kind of three sided conflict in close proximity is fun. Chopper and Carrot's side of things is also kind of scary and the duo involved are so cute. The furry, excitable, fighting babies who would do anything for their friends. What’s not to love!
To talk more on why I enjoy the Vinsmoke family as antagonists, we need to look no further than the Cosette beating scene. They are so silly and over the top, their designs, their squeaky shoes, their relentless pride. However, they are grounded in a way in which I feel makes them never cross the line of unbelievable. We saw how the kids were raised. We saw what Judge values and his motivations and how stern and mean he could be. We saw how since they were children, Judge told them they were better than other people. These are prideful people that seem as if they were raised on an idea of strength and pride above everything else. It’s why when insulted, Niji can be such a pompous prick that he would beat a defenseless woman for humiliating him by proxy, assuming there is more reason than luring Sanji to the vault. It’s why Judge can be such an unloving and stern jerk. It’s a nice balance of zany and reasonable evil that the Vinsmokes strike and it gives them a pretty unique presence and identity. This also led into a brilliant kick to the face. That felt good. But, what were you expecting, Niji?!
The other aspect I should speak on is Judge’s past with Vegapunk and their clone soldiers. This rubbed me the wrong way immediately. I really don’t like brainwashing, or mind control or the likes of controlling people in fiction. I am interested in fanatical followers inspired by power, fear, charisma, etc. But when it’s stated that they are 100% fearless and loyal because they are clones, that’s when I feel a loss of interest, the fun stops there. I do not think this is going to be boring no matter what, I know very little about what Oda is doing with this topic. In fact, it could pursue some fascinating ideas about self identity and personhood, the clones supposedly don’t even know that they are clones if I read correctly. I just wanted to mention that some warning alarms went off in my head. The other important thing about this is: 1. Caesar was also Vegapunk’s ally at one point and he is here and could potentially tap into this system that Judge has created, and 2. Yonji telling Sanji about this is quite bad for Germa 66. Sanji is a tactifican, he understands the scenario he is in, and he acts quickly and effectively to dismantle situations that seem difficult in a matter of moments. Will we perhaps get some more teamwork between Sanji and Caesar? |
