THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I like that the backgrounds are of real places.

Other than that, nothing really stood out to me. Nothing in particular stood out as humorous to me. I can honestly say I've never watched an episode about toothpick carving, rain gutters, and envelope adhesive. I'm curious as to what the future holds, so I guess this will be my Nyaruani/Reibai-sensei replacement this season.

wow and I though Happy Kappi was a low budget anime, but apparently I was wrong because this anime makes Happy Kappi look like a multimillion production,

To be honest this anime wasn't that bad considering it was only about 4 minute long so I will continue watching it for another episode to see if the plot actually improves or not. but just from the first episode this anime doesn't exactly amaze me with its (pretty much nonexistent) story line and amazing(ly crappy) animation

Quickly watched it since it was only four minutes. Not bad at all to be honest. Just wonder what direction this will go in.

Same here, watched it since its just four minutes long. Haven't seen any other flash animes so far, but oh well.

At least the discussion about Toothpicks was elaborate... Curious as to how this will play out.

In something like this, it would be crazy to expect a plot. What should be expected is some form of humor or interesting characters. Incredibly bland.

Wow, that was horrible. I couldn't even finish watching it.
I don't watch anime to listen to conversations about tooth picks.

the humor is in how ridiculous the situation is. Why is there a "traditional arts club" in the school? Wait, they're not even traditional arts, they are just carving toothpicks and making rain gutters. Actually not even carving toothpicks, but carving the dent at the top of the toothpick. Why is the rain gutter maker such an elitist? Is making rain gutters more prestigious than putting glue on envelopes? If you don't find this anime funny its probably cause of two reasons.

1. This is situational humor, in which you have to "get" the situation. Its not going to be spelled out for you. If you're usually not known for you wit, or you're usually slower in the uptake of things, then you probably not going to enjoy this anime.
2. Unfortunately, the language barrier gets in the way. hearing and understanding the japanese of "amadoi shokuin" versus reading a subtitle of "rain gutter craftsman" just doesn't have the same impact. something like "artisan of drainspouts" or I hold the title of "grandmaster gutter maker" would probably be more humorous. That is why most comedy animes get low or inconsistent reviews.

Ever wonder why they bother giving you separate reading comprehension and listening comprehension language tests? Well for most people its two separate skills and its difficult for people to simultaneously read and listen at the same time.

The drawing style reminded me of Honto ni...Reibai Sensei.

And what is with the conversation about tooth picks? That is so weird.

This was... terrible. It's extremely boring and it seems like it'll be like Haiyoru Nyaruani, and that one was horrible too. So I don't think I'll watch this any further than this.

The only thing I liked was the background. It's different and that's it. The humor didn't stand out and the characters have yet to appeal.
Just 4 mins, so lets see if it ever gets good.

Well I couldn't expect that much from a 4 minute episode...but this somehow amuses me. I'm not sure as to why, but it just does.
I'll probably get bored of it soon enough, though.

So far I like it, but maybe that's because poorly-drawn absurd comedies are my guilty pleasure. Obviously I'll have to continue watching to get a good idea of what sort of comedy it'll be though.

I thought the art was pretty decent for a flash but I find toothpick-san to be pretty awesome rofl.
Overall 3/5, the green haired girl(Hajime)'s voice reminded me of Hanazawa Kana

Double-J is a program that will engage the philosophical senses of even the most judicious of anime enthusiasts.
The first episode's four-minute running time deftly illustrates the fleeting nature of mortality. We wake up, we go to school, we engage in hours of homework (as the ending theme artistically conveys through frenetic metaphor), and then we die.
Some among us may decry Double-J's unorthodox art style. But in today's post-modernistic culture, the skillful application of minimalism can convey theme and emotion with all the flair of a pipe that is no pipe.
Just a few of episode one's deepest themes:
People are out of place in Nature, and need technology to survive.
Society and a person's inner nature are always at war.
A person's identity is determined by place in society.
A person grows only in so far as he or she must face a crisis of confidence or identity.
By the time we understand life, there is too little left to live.

I quite liked it. I can easily see the similarities between this and Cromartie High, another work by the same author and in that respect I enjoy the absurd humour and cheap, dirty visuals. However, some of what Cromartie had seems to have been lost. What I loved about Double-J's predecessor was the stony faced delinquents and their tough and scary appearance being torn apart by the silliness of what was going on around them, and the moe schoolgirls just don't seem as funny. Still, I enjoyed how adamant the glasses girl was about the artistic value of carving toothpicks and fixing gutters as opposed to gluing envelopes. I'm definitely going to keep watching.

On another note, if they have a single Freddy cameo I'm totally sold on this.

HAHAHA!!!

Anywho .-. I didn't like it much. I'm going to watch the second episode though, because I don't like to drop animes after one bad episode. It wasn't neccisarily bad, but I just thought that something from the mind of the god who created Cromartie High (if I remember correctly) would be slightly funnier e_e

One thing that irks me: how many freaking comedy animes will take place in a strange club that does odd things? I can think of six right off the bat...

I'll give it a chance, still.

interesting using photographs, and i think the poor animation fits with the story, length and humor of this anime. i actually found it reasonably funny, not the best but quite good.

Was expecting more from the dude behind Cromartie but I still thought it was kinda funny. I didn't think I'd be in such a huge minority. Hope it starts to pick up later but I think I'll end up liking it no matter what. I'm really digging the photograph backgrounds/lazy animation contrast.
