I've never watched a Ghibli film, but I feel that I should.
Is it "anything goes" is is there like a "progression" as in "Watch those first, then watch this ones ones, then those other ones, etc"?

Anything goes, the films are not related to each other. All of then are generally of high quality but avoid the few that aren't (Tales from Earthsea which is a half assed adaptation of Ursula le Guin's stuff, My Neighbors the Yamadas and Pom Poko which are both boring af)

Start with the highest rated ones, then if you don't like them feel free to blacklist Hayao Miyazaki and watch the ones directed by Takahata Isao (definitely more to my liking).

Nausicaa, Mononoke Hime, Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away are good starting points, those might be the real meat of Ghibli, though others might think differently. Don't have outlandish expectations, Gihbli was in a sense the Disney of the japanese but with a more mature story telling and themes, less repetitiveness and timidness than in its western counterpart. There is a reason for its being a respected studio, but it's haydays were twenty to fourty years ago, you need to keep that in mind.

"is is there like a "progression""

To see that you should start way back before Ghibli with Panda Kopanda, than the Miyazaki directed episodes of Lupin III and Lupin III Part II, than maybe Heidi, than Mirai Shounen Conan, than Lupin III: Cagliostro no Shiro, than Meitantei Holmes, than Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä and only than continue with the actual Ghibli titles in chronological order.

The short version is Lupin III: Cagliostro no Shiro -> Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä -> Hotaru no Haka (the first Ghibli movie) -> Tonari no Totoro ect.

And there's my even shorter recommendation:

Panda Kopanda (just to see where this started...for example the idea behind the St. Bernard from Heidi and Totoro) ->
the Miyazaki directed episodes of Lupin III Part II (145 and 155) ->
Lupin III: Cagliostro no Shiro ->
Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä ->
Tonari no Totoro ->
Tenkuu no Shiro Laputa ->
Kaguya-hime no Monogatari

Those are the best in my opinion. Than go with whatever Ghibli project you want.

Either by release order, popularity order, score order, or just personal preference.

If by release order, then it's highly advisable to start with Nausicaa (written and directed by Miyazaki) before continuing with the actual Ghibli movies.

Mononoke Hime is also a common starter, because it's arguably the most "adult themed" Ghibli movie.

Avoid the Miyazaki ones. The best things from Ghibli didn't come from him

This is actually kind of like asking how someone gets into all the shit produced by BMG. Just because it’s well-made doesn’t mean you’re automatically going to like it. Studio Ghibli is basically just another Japanese animation studio. lol

There isn’t a fucking set progression with Ghibli films. They aren’t a shared universe or serialized story. Each film production by this studio stands alone and often they can have totally different vibes to them. Some people dig the “big” epic shit like "Spirited Away" or "Princess Mononoke", others prefer lighter, heartwarming shit like "My Neighbor Totoro" or "Kiki’s Delivery Service". Honestly, you can jump in wherever...

If you want my take for fantasy-themed films aimed at older audiences, I’d personally go with shit like "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" (even though it technically predates Ghibli) or "Princess Mononoke". If you’re more into cute kid-friendly shit, "Ponyo" is basically what I let my daughter watch when she was barely even five.

At the end of the day, the only thing that really stands out about Ghibli is their style and production quality. But like with BMG, if the genre isn’t your thing, it doesn’t matter how well it’s made, likely no one’s going to give a shit about fucking listening to something like "Wynonna Judd", 'if' Ghibli also produced music, if someone only wants to listen to hardcore Hip-hop and Rap. lol

I recommend watching lupin III part 1 because it is histroical anime that one destroy the Japanese mentality of "anime is for children" and showed the audience that it can reached wider audience, and the second half 12-23 marks the debut of Hayao Miyazaki as a series director working in cooperation with Isao Takahata.

Then I recommend lupin III castle of cagliostro movie since this also marked Hayao Miyazaki first movie he created and it also very influencial since it influenced directors from the west like John Lasseter (founder of pixar) along many other directors, to then this movie many of the formulas would be used later in "studio ghili" era.

PS

For clarity why I am talking about those two episodes of Lupin III Part II:
- Episode 145 is sorta-lika proto version of Porco Rosso
- Episode 155 is sorta-lika proto version of Castle in the Sky Laputa

And about the Lupin III franchise - you don't need that much of context, just to know who the main characters are:
- Lupin III. Thief and grandson of the infamous Arsene Lupin.
- Daisuke Jigen. Sharp shooter and member of Lupin's gang.
- Goemon Ishikawa XIII. Thief, sword master and heir to the infamous samurai thief Goemon Ishikawa. Member of Lupin's gang.
- Fujiko Mine. Thief, femme fatale and ex-assasin. Semi-regular member of Lupin's gang. Usually runs out with the plunder leaving the rest of gang epmy-handed.
- Kouichi Zenigata. Cop, the butt of every joke, but gets some of the best one-liners and the upper moral ground.

I found Spirited Away to be lighter and heartwarming, especially compared to Nausicaa or Laputa. I'll admit it's more exciting than Totoro and Kiki, which look boring as all hell.

Are you actually a mature human being with functional capacity of thinking? There's no point of grabbing attention for whether you should take the first step on the left or right foot. My nephew in kindergarten is already doing better than you in this regard.

It’s not like a series, man. You don’t need to follow an order. Just pick any Ghibli movie and watch. If you want something calm, try Totoro. If you want more fantasy, go for Spirited Away or Howl’s Moving Castle. There’s no wrong way to start.

@ZXEAN I feel like a simple internet search would have covered all this info lmao. But this is thewiru, so I'm not surprised they're worried about optimizing this

If you have to ask this, you're not a true anime fan, but a normie tourist. Any anime fan worth his, or her, salt, would know you can go in blind and watch whatever. Asking just paints you as an attention seeking pretend fan, someone who spends their time on twitter, FB and comments sections trash talking for validation, not an actual fan of the medium. Go away do some homework (by which I mean watch some anime, and make your own decisions without seeking approval from strangers on the net) and stop embarrassing yourself.

I'd just say pick one at random then move on to the next and doesn't matter if you like it or not, each Ghibli film pretty much has it's own distinct style so it's not really a case of if you love/hate one you'll love/hate all

If you want a rec, what themes and styles are you most into?

I thought most anime fans agree that Studio Ghibli is the most "normie" or "beginner-friendly" anime there is... There's no need for tips or guidelines, especially for someone who's already watching anime.

They're not difficult movies. Just watch the one that looks appealing to you. Any of the ones already mentioned will do.

If your interest in them is "academic," then why don't you just go chronological? Assuming you'll be watching most of them anyway. Even then, it doesn't really matter which order you watch them in, you can piece together the context/narrative later on as you see fit.

most of the movies are good and easy to start with. Spirited Away, The Cat Returns and Ponyo were my first.

Avoid Earwig and The Witch, it's garbage
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

I found that a lot of Ghibli films didn't really resonate with me as a kid. But as an adult, many of them hit WAY harder. Spirited Away, Kiki, and Totoro were particularly hard-hitting after I'd been working for a few years.
