My one nitpick complaint about Enies Lobby has been that it’s been one fun blur, but a blur nonetheless. It lacks the memorability of arcs like Arlong or Alabasta on the episode to episode basis. Sure, the overarching structure is memorable but we just got a couple episodes of the same predictable thing happening each time. Luffy ran around being chased. Sanji and the guys rode along on monsters or a train to get into town. The no-names helped by getting gates open or fighting other no names. And nothing was challenging. Is this a real criticism, no. However, it’s something that I felt never really happened in my other favorite arcs other than the filler in Alabasta. I just wish more was going on that we could have speculated on because I was just waiting for everything that’s happened so far to happen with no surprises. It’s been clear and it’s like we’re driving to a destination with no road bumps or obstacles and I want to stress, it is fun, it’s just that it’s kind of… substanceless? This has only been for a handful of episodes now and the reason I bring this up into detail is because, THIS EPISODE CHANGED THAT COMPLETELY!!! This was awesome and it seems like potentially the turning point of this. It was so memorable and there’s a fair bit to talk about.
Firstly, a small thing. I love how Water 7 has not only explored Usopp’s and Luffy’s characters in so far as seeing what would break them, and has given more depth to Robin, but I also love the relationship development that has gone on between some of them. Zoro has shown to care about Usopp more than ever this arc and this episode was another case of it. When Nami and the others were worried for Usopp he said with full confidence that, “he, too, has always survived life or death situations, no one in our group would die so easily”. It’ so awesome the trust he shows in Usopp. And following this line it showed another example from the other notable relationship I adore, Sanji and Chopper! Chopper exclaims fear since he doesn't know Sogeking is Usopp and Sanji comforts him like he did when Chopper thought Robin left because of him, and those times that Chopper wanted to see and worried about Usopp and says “he’s an invincible hero, right?”, I adore how this arc has developed these relationships. Everyone is feeling closer.
AND THEN USOPP TALKS TO THE GIANT!! I really wanted someone who knew Dorry and Brogy to talk to them and I expressed that and Usopp gave that exactly, remembering everything about them because, to him, the giants of Elbaf are what he’s inspired to be like exactly! Both of them cry manly tears and somehow just somehow Oda salvages the disgusting character of the giants and created a great memorable scene. If Usopp doesn’t train under a giant in Elbaf one day, preferably Dorry or Broggy, we are going to miss out on something incredibly special.
Then Sodom nearly, or does die. He turns to everyone to tell them to go on ahead with tears in his eyes and blood all over him. One Piece both made a 1D mean giant a good character and made a goofy giant animal a total homie with an adorable backstory and a strong resolve to help his savior and his comrades. Holy how, this is what I mean when I say the monotony seems to be over. It’s so special that Zoro showed real regret to the loss of Sodom before pulling everyone forward.
Blueno warns Luffy something that we all know, attacking the world government means they will be criminals on a scale insanely higher than before. All of them should get bounties outside of maybe Usopp because he’s wearing a mask but the joke is no one falls for it anyways, so probably not. Stronger people than ever will be after them and everyone will know their faces and be on the lookout for them. It seems as though this attack on Enies Lobby is going to change how One Piece goes forward forever regardless of the outcome here.
Luffy Gum Gum Rifle’s through iron body, something that’s always a delight to see regardless of if it’s Franky, Sanji, or Luffy doing it. One thing to mention about this is, if I recall correctly the attack that we’ve seen that did the most damage to iron body was Gum Gum Rifle, and it's an attack that Luffy did to Usopp in their duel. My God. He really gave Usopp his all and Usopp taking that hit shows just how strong he can be...
Proceeding this he does gatling on Blueno in what seemed to be a bait because Luffy was ready for the dash, turned basically before Blueno moved knowing exactly when and where he’d want to escape to, and followed that dash with a smack to the un-iron bodied face. That is the start of a memorable and awesome fight if I’ve ever seen one. I had to rewatch that amazing encounter a few times.
“The world this, the government that, it’s not my problem. We came here to get robin back.”
Luffy is my hero and my idol oh my god I love him so much. |
