It's criminal that animators don't get paid hourly (except at Kyoto Animation, and maybe one or two others are starting to adopt their "model"), but by the number of cuts they hand in. Of course a newbie wouldn't even be able to make a living at all like that. Oh, and she's literally paid ¥0 for any retakes and overtime. This industry is so far up its own ass, it's infuriating.

i don't like Aoi's sister, making herself too much at home.
i feel bad for Ema but it's not Aoi's job to console her so she at least could've said "thanks anyway" or something like that. i don't like ungrateful people....

"Power harassment?"
"It'll be worse than that."
"Sexual harassment?" I'd be pretty excited about that

Sounds like the advice from that old geezer backfired hard, she should just have continued working like before and slowly improve her skills and speed.

What a good anime. But also what a SLOOOWWW BURRNNN of an anime holy shit. I feel like mushishi was faster paced than this. Nothing wrong with being slow, this is great if you just want to kick back and relax and take it easy. However right now I’m in a high octane mood and I can easily tell you that this is not it chief

The life of a key animator is a really tough one, and honestly unless you have the passion for drawing tons of frames for using as key animation later on, it's not the best job to go for to survive in life in the long run. It's a high stress job where you need to have the balance of speed, technique, hard work and dedication to the task at hand while the pay in general for that field is depressingly low. For Ema to build a future around this, she needs to be excelling at least in the four factors like I mentioned to really build a career out of this since without consistent technique and speed, its easy to fuck up scheduling really badly for the rest of the production. It hits her even worse when she's going through a slump as she tries to improve both her technique and speed but feels like she's going nowhere, and with that negativity showing its face more and more, it only ruins her technique and precision with her drawings that way.

I feel like this conflict on paper is pretty interesting, but it doesn't feel as intense and heartfelt as it normally would given how kid-friendly and lighthearted the tone of the show seems to be when tackling the anime industry where the serious nature of the show and the depressing situation of a key animator doesn't strike as much of an impact in my opinion. It definitely could cut much deeper if it was a more serious show with an actual plot in mind and went really more in-depth to her internal struggles for the longer run. Overall, a fine episode tackling a harsh topic in the anime industry but it really missed the emotional impact to make it into a good one and at times and I feel like it really could have gone deeper into the negatives of the anime industry for how scummy the whole system of pay is for key animators and how they break their backs for nothing, which only makes Ema's situation more stressful to really nail with the speed and precision of her frames.

I really feel what ema is going through. The part where she says, "If I'm failing in the present, the future's not going to get better." Really hits home.

Also the part where Aoi cut off Shigeru while he was talking to Ema kinda hurt my heart.

This show is pretty good, a lot is going on but they are balancing it really well.
I feel for both Ema and Aoi. I have been in both positions. And when work makes you lose self confidence, it hurts worse than any physical pain.

Great work by director, because it hit too close to home.
