Synopsis

In a fairy tale come to life, the clumsy, sweet, and gentle Ahiru seems like an unlikely protagonist. In reality, Ahiru is just as magical as the talking cats and crocodiles that inhabit her town—for Ahiru really is a duck! Transformed by the mysterious Drosselmeyer into a human girl, Ahiru soon learns the reason for her existence. Using her magical egg-shaped pendant, Ahiru can transform into Princess Tutu—a beautiful and talented ballet dancer whose dances relieve people of the turmoil in their hearts. With her newfound ability, Ahiru accepts the challenge of collecting the lost shards of her prince's heart, for long ago he had shattered it in order to seal an evil raven away for all eternity.

Princess Tutu is a tale of heroes and their struggle against fate. Their beliefs, their feelings, and ultimately their actions will determine whether this fairy tale can reach its "happily ever after."

I highly recommend this anime. This anime is a meta commentary that flips the ending of fairy tale stories, while also being a parody of those who are thirsty for a tragic ending. I'll have some spoilers, but only at the end. So just read the first part of my review, and skip the spoiler part.

Plot: the plot is about a duck who can transform into a girl and Princess Tutu. She falls in love with the prince, but notices that he looks lonely. The reason is, the prince shattered his own heart to seal the raven. So Princess ... Tutu wants to restore his heart to him. What makes this interesting is that they're all characters from a book, written by Drosselmeyer. Drosselmeyer seems keen on a tragic ending, and he's the one with the power to write the story.

I will say how it flipped the ending and mocked those who were thirsty for tragedy is top tier. It's something that's happening with new gen Shounen now. Like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Demon Slayer, etc. Everyone just has a thirst for death and sad endings. A lot of them act like Drosselmeyer, who's the main villain. I like how it shows them as weird and sadistic. Not that one is weird for liking a story with a sad ending. It's just that if someone is constantly wanting the saddest ending and always wanting a tragedy for the sake of edge, then I don't know what to say.

Though more than a parody, it explores identity issues. The main characters constantly question who they are, and what their role in the story is. That's what makes it hard, because they're not suited for the role that they had been given. Princess Tutu is a story about people being aware that they're simply playing a role in a story, and trying to figure out who they truly are.

A lot of people didn't like the ending pairings, but I found them brilliant. They were the ones that made sense, and were pairings where the two actually had a connection. Plus, it was always foreshadowed within the anime.

Of course, this anime isn't without its flaws. One thing I do like is that in the middle, it gets episodic. A monster of the week, if you will. It gets old after a while. Another thing is their cat sensei asking them to marry him. That joke was never funny, and it gets annoying and old, very fast.

Overall, I rate it a 9/10. Brilliant plot line of finding one self, flipping fairy tale stories, mocking the death merchants, and brilliant pairings.

Spoilers alert! If you hadn't watched all episodes, then don't read past this line.

Rue x Myuuto and Fakir x Duck were brilliant pairings. Rue had always been by Myuuto's side, and he great to appreciate it when he got his heart back. A lot of people think that Duck should've ended up with him because she sacrificed a lot, plus she saved him. Yet, just because she did all of that, doesn't mean that he's obligated to be with her. Plus, the raven foreshadowed that the only man who could love Rue, was the prince from the story, which is Prince Myuuto. Duck and Fakir were always set to be together because he changed as a man, simply due to her influence. He's also the only one to love all three forms of her, and see the true her. Of course they'd end up together!

Another reason that people don't like it is because they think it's a happy ending for Rue and Myuuto, but a rather bittersweet ending for Duck and Fakir, since Duck is still a duck. However, it's ultimately a happy ending for everyone, that practically slaps you in the face. Throughout the story, the line: "To those who accept fate, happiness. To those who defy fate, glory" is uttered. All of them defied the fate of Drosselmeyer, so they were given glory. But they also accepted the new fate that Fakir wrote for them, so happiness. Duck is the one who accepts it the most. She accepts the fate of being a duck, because that's her true self. So she gets happiness. we see that her ending up as a duck is the end of the story. That's why Drosselmeyer and Uzura left to go ruin another story. He probably went on to write Chainsaw Man or Jujutsu Kaisen.

Another clue is what's narrated at the end: "And there was another man, who began writing a story. That story full of hope, has only just begun." Then we see a picture of Duck as a human with the wings of a swan, and a bridal veil. The manga also ends with Duck as a girl. This is basically stating that Fakir is writing a story of hope where Duck turns into a beautiful swan princess, and they end up getting married. Duck accepting her true self, as a duck, is the end of one story. Though her turning into a beautiful swan princess, is the start of another story. And unlike miserable and sadistic Drosselmeyer, Fakir won't write a sad ending.

Mixed Feelings

Let me start of by clarifying: Princess Tutu wasn't bad. The art was amazing, the plot was complex and enchanting and completely explained. The ballet was phenomenal. However, it took me three years to get over the ending. Now, don't get me wrong; it wasn't bad. I just thought it shouldn't have been so... final. It shocked me and upset me thoroughly. That and how despite having such a compelling plot, a lot of it doesn't make sense until you get to the end.

Overall, the two things that bothered me was the ending and how the comedy seemed like a bad joke rather than ...

I don't normally write reviews. In fact, I don't think I've ever written any.
But this anime though, this anime takes the cake. This anime is like the biggest scam ever.
Now, if you don't like spoiler, then stop reading.

First of all, I've watched this show back when I was still a little kid. I used to really like it, way before I got into Majo DoReMi... Okay, maybe not the ending. I think I hated it so much that I've mentally blocked it off my head. For nostalgia's sake, I revisited this show. Oh boy, how much I want my 2 hours of my life back.
