Both shows start off as typical and superficially juvenile Mahou Shoujo shows, but from the beginning there is an element of mystery and menace that lurks in the background. Both are a bit older, but still look good despite slightly dated art styles. Both have strongly realized characters that have clear strengths and weaknesses. Both series are manipulated behind the scenes by a seemingly ambivalent force that eventually proves to be more malevolent that initial impressions suggest.
Both start off, pretty lighthearted but as time goes by it eventually becomes more darker as well as both also being from the same studio as well in this case hal film maker. And also 2 girls that are polar opposites of each other as well too.

Princess Tutu and Uta Kata are two magical girl anime made by Hal Film Maker, which means there are gorgeous animation and overall art direction with both shows (they also have nice OST). The main character in both series are girls who accidentally meet a strange person and are given a strange accessory that gives them magical transformations. These shows are also magical girl shows that have a notable darker side to them, as the main characters also eventually go through some changes throughout the story, and start to think less of themselves.
