Both are surprisingly dark and mature magical girl series, in which a lot of thought has been given to the story. Madoka seems to be even darker, but Tutu is definitely worth watching as well. Both have very good soundtracks, too.

Both are Magical girl animes. But beyond the obvious, they both take place in artful and abstract worlds. They are also more than your average magical school girl anime. Interesting concepts and heart wrenching characters. (Trying to compare these to animes without spoilers) At many points both animes give the same "vibe", and redefine this genre.

Magical girl series that tend more toward action and dark themes than the frills and cuteness one might expect from the genre. Although Princess Tutu does play the genre straight, it does it in a fairly unexpected and mature way, and Madoka's a straight-up deconstruction that will leave you increasingly unnerved with each episode -- both in a good way, of course. Both series are great for magical girl fans who want something fresh from the genre.

There is much more than meets the eye for both of them - they are darker, thought-provoking magical girl shows that seem pretty standard on the surface.

Being a magical girl means sacrificing a lot of things and even after saving the world the heroine might be left without her happy ending. It's a long way until world can be saved and on the way sacrifices must be made and sometimes even magical powers can't help to solve problems.

Both are rather dark for the innocent, magical girl styles that they are portrayed with. Madoka Magica is a bit darker, however. Both also involve agreements with another person to help them change into a magical girl - Madoka with the soul gems, and Tutu with the pendant.

At first, both may appear for younger audiences, but soon you discover there is more to them. They both have a darker take on mahou shoujo anime and both deal mainly with the problems the main heroine encounters, instead of her bonding with her friends and defeating her enemies. Madoka is more action and the pace is much faster, while Princess Tutu has a very calm atmosphere to it.

Its a show that Madoka took inspiration from and has actual pacing and has time for charactization. Also, Guitar Ninjas.

For a magical girl theme show, Madoka and Princess Tutu takes the theme and transform it into more of a difference style of presentation. It has a mature feeling to it as well as psychological themes involving the main characters and their relationships. There's the theme of romance in Tutu while Madoka has more action. The worlds that both series takes place in also has a magical feeling to them. There is emotions. There is sacrifice. There is sorrow. In essence, both shows takes the magical girl theme to different level.

Both are amazing Magical Girl anime, Princess Tutu being a little more aimed at a younger audience while Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica is more for the older and adult audience.

Princess Tutu and Madoka Magica on the surface appear to be very typical magical girl shows, with cutsey art and a simplistic story. However both subvert the watchers expectations with a darker take on the genre and compelling and well thought out stories and characters. They also have similar themes about selfishness verses selflessness and the nature of hope.

A much darker look at the magical girl anime, but also at the fairy tale world. A beautiful tale and lovely characters to get to know.

Both of these shows are great, original Magical Girl anime. Their plots are both interesting and touching, along with being dark at times.

Both feature young female protagonists facing an increasingly ominous world, and take the magical girl genre and refresh it in an interesting way. Both have deep and very bittersweet stories and unexpected twists. I saw Tutu first and while watching Madoka, I was continually reminded of it.

Both series are magical girl series with bright colors and pretty animation that are much, much, much darker than they initially look.

Their both Magical Girl anime and they both have some dark themes although Madoka Magica is a lot darker

Both are subversions or critiques of the more standard values associated with the magical girl genre. Madoka Magica is the more direct of the two, shot through with a howling anguish present from the very beginning, and is well worth the watch, despite some problems (it is overly stylized and it all happens much too fast, with some characterization getting lost in the forward thrust of the story). Princess Tutu is more mature, more self-aware and more beautiful; it is slow-burning, but equally tragic, and it takes on not only the genre itself but the practice of storytelling as a whole. Despite some dull moments,   read more

Both are a "bad-side of magical girl" anime. Tutu is less of a deconstruction, but is a dark magical girl story. It's also a really good show and you should watch it.

Both shows have female leads who really want to help people and are kind. In the beginning, both seem rather simple and cute but as the plot unfolds they take surprisingly darker turns. In both, the characters have inner conflicts and underlying motives. If you enjoy one of these, you'll most likely enjoy the other.

Both... ...put a twist on the magical girl genre, while still remaining faithful to its core values. ...boast an excellent and beautiful soundtrack. ...can be dark and bittersweet at times and will probably make you cry. ...have a cast of deep, complex and relatable characters. Princess Tutu is suitable to all ages and can be a bit too childish at times, while Madoka Magica is probably a bit too dark for younger audiences. Madoka Magica subverts some tropes, so it's recommended - but not necessary - you are somewhat familiar with the genre first. You have to deal with some bad comedy and average filler episodes when watching Princess Tutu,   read more

-Madoka is more of a deconstruction of the magical girl genre, Princess Tutu is a story where tragic ends often play out for our protagonists. -Princess Tutu is a 2002 anime, an example of tragic magical girls before madoka for the unfamiliar ones and vice-versa for madoka.

Both start off fairly light hearted but it gets lot more darker as time goes by, and also 2 girls that are polar opposites of each other as well too that have to work together for a mutual goal as well as a dark force behind the scenario of the story.

Both feature a protagonist who's a young girl with a good heart but a naive view on the world. they're thrown into this magical adventure and here is where the cliché ends and both shows excel because the magical world is actually much more complex than what one would first imagine and characters don't get rewarded just for doing what they think it's right. both show also interesting and complex side characters and antagonists and similar god-like main villains.

Princess Tutu and Puella Magi Madoka Magica are two magical girl anime about a girl who wishes to be able to help others and eventually can transform into a magical girl to do so, by using a magical jewel that they obtain from strange white-haired sources. These two series feature great character designs, some well-known orchestral songs, and good attention to animation (Princess Tutu has well-animated ballet dance scenes while Madoka Magica uses a large variety of stylized animation techniques). But these shows are also known for having a dark storyline, tragic characters, and touches on fate and hope. These two shows are must-watches for   read more

Both are very dark magical girl animes with mostly girl characters. Both main characters are very cute and golden hearted

The plots are quite similar, just Princess Tutu is also appropriate for younger ages. Both revolve around a magical girl who learns that magic and her reality aren't quite as pure as she thought- and they both get quite dark- and you can argue Madoka's ending and Tutu's ending are quite similar. A deconstruction of fairytales and the magical girl genre. Both have some bodily horror, and a good friend who gets corrupted.
