Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon S

It always seems that the longer a series goes on that it almost inevitably gets worse. That can pretty much be said for Sailor Moon S, the third season of the franchise. While it is not a bad series (far from it), I found that it was the most difficult of the three I have seen so far to watch.

It has always been a peeve of mine when a story develops to a point and then mystically finds itself reverting back. Sailor Moon S suffers from the introduction of some pretty unlikable characters plus the reintroduction of an annoying one. The ... later is Chibi-Usa, the future daughter of Usagi and Mamoru who pointlessly returns from the future, apparently to just become a pest. The progress made in the relationship between Usagi and Chibi-Usa apparently is meaningless as we are again treated to constant arguing and disrespect shown to her "mother". Honestly the whole time I just wanted Usagi to take her over her knee and throttle her back to the future. Even more inexplicable is Chibi Usa's constant interference in Usagi's and Mamoru's relationship. I mean she does realize if they aren’t together she won’t be born... right?

The other new characters are the introduction of Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. A pair of completely unlikeable, cruel, and arrogant girls who never do answer for their own crimes as they ruthlessly pursue their own goals. Their rude and despicable attitude towards Usagi and the other guardian senshi despite being saved by them multiple times made them, for me at least, difficult to like.

For the most part these are my early impressions, and made it hard to get through the series until it starts to reach its climax. Chibi-Usa does become less annoying and she really isn’t in the series as much as it appeared she was going to be by the end. Though my dislike for Uranus and Neptune remained until the end. The story is pretty good but really not as strong as the first two series. The motivations of the villains don’t feel as defined as in previous seasons and the plot really feels repetitive for almost three quarters of the show. The weaknesses of the first two series remain, though the action is a little better. Mostly because of the addition of the new warriors the numbers of combinations increase which makes the battles a little more diverse. Though they are still pretty boring. I also felt that the Inner Senshi characters that are really important took too much of a backseat to the unlikable Outer Senshi. While each girl does have a couple episodes devoted to them it does feel like they have been mostly neglected. Also the romance elements were almost nonexistent in this series, which was a major disappointment for me. Despite all these things, the ending arc is very well done and I did enjoy the whole Sailor Saturn/Mistress 9 part of the story.

The art is probably the best it has been up to this point. Though there are a number of issues I had with the animation. Mostly this has to do with the really silly and overly long cut scenes, the biggest offender being Usagi's use of her special attack. Really was all that dancing around and spins necessary? Also the music really suffers here as well with the introduction of some of the corniest anime music I have ever heard. Now when the sailors transform we get treated to individual songs for each girl. I wasn’t sure whether I should laugh or cry when listening to it.

Overall though I still did end up liking this series, and it is particularly saved by the last arc involving Sailor Saturn. It has a number of flaws but it is still the Sailor Moon I know and love. It seems to know when you are really getting annoyed or frustrated with something and stops in time before you want to turn it off. Fans of the first two seasons will still enjoy this but you will probably be a little let down, particularly on the romance side, like I was.

Ou, I was a teenager when I started to watch and be a fan of this anime. We were a group of fans which imagined that we are SailorMoon or SailorMars and so. We watched these episodes and cried with characters etc. That was real fun.
Now I think this is one of the precious animes I have ever seen because it is funny un childish in its sort kind of way, it is romantic and a little bit nude but isn't too pervert to show to children, it shows different kind of situations that could happen in real life too (mostly metaphorical of course) and ... it shows that bravery and good friends are most valuable think in world.
It is good anime because of these situations which teaches us to be brave and never give up. At least from this anime I learned that and now I never give up and continuing to be brave when it is needed.

Here we are, three hundred anime reviews, not counting those few manga ones I've done. Those of you who are more familiar with my reviews are probably expecting something Sailor Moon related just because the hundredth and two hundredth reviews were both Sailor Moon series and it would be strange if this wasn't one. You are, of course, absolutely right. In keeping with that tradition, I'm going to talk about Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon S, the third anime series to come to light. It ran from 94 to 95, but I digress. In the first series we saw the sailor soldiers defeat Queen Beryl & ... the dark kingdom, sacrificing themselves in the process. In the second series, their reborn bodies regained their memories and they bid farewell to their normal lives, which was especially difficult for Usagi given her finding ordinary life most endearing. They fought a pair of aliens and their Hell Tree and then proceeded to take on the challenge of the Black Moon clan with the help of ChibiUsa, the most annoying character in the series and Usagi's future child who didn't even have the decency to time travel in a police box or something else interesting. So, let's dive in and see what new adventure awaits us. I'm sure there will be much to discuss.

Story:

We open with a new threat. One that gives our heroines a cold sweat. They call themselves the Death Busters. Emerging from deep dimensional clusters. At the same time new soldiers appear. Representing a new era, we have Uranus and Neptune, both quite queer. I don't mean that in any kind of demeaning sense. So please don't take offence. It's quite literally true. These girls quickly cause yuri to ensue. The Death Busters are seeking talismans for reasons unknown. The Sailor Soldiers seek to make them atone. First, however, they must discover the talisman's locale. As well as Uranus and Neptune's motivations and rationale. Can they stop these villain from stealing the crystals of people's hearts? What's the best way to bring down these upstarts?

There's only one real narrative failing. At times the story seems to be flailing. Rather than pushing forward and progressing with the story. Fighting further monsters gives them glory. In all fairness, filler episodes are nothing new. The positive side to it is that they allow the characters to develop their dynamics without much ado.

On to more positive aspects. The narrative works in many respects. The battle against the Busters has some high tension. The whole conflict with Uranus and Neptune, revolving around differences in outlook, adds dimension. This is also the funniest the series has ever been. With plenty of humorous episodes and many a comedic scene. There's also some strong romance. Not betwixt Mamoru and Usagi, they've already blown their chance. The romance between Uranus and Neptune is really strong. You can tell that together they belong. There's also a budding romance when Hotaru and Chibi-Usa meet. It's really very sweet. The climactic battle is very intense. Containing several factors for suspense. It makes for quite interesting viewing. Seeing the plans that have been built up and the attempts at their undoing.

Characters:

The cast in this works really well. Adding Haruka, Michiru & Hotaru really helps it excel. The three all get fleshed out back stories. Which help elevate them above simple categories. The villains are also quite interesting, I must profess. The way they're written has finesse. Like the other villains we've seen, they're quite sympathetic. They aren't just evil for the evils and unapologetic. You actually feel for them and hope to see them mend their ways. Before they find themselves going out in a blaze. Our favourite soldiers all make a triumphant return. Complete with more facets still for us to learn. I also have to admit that Chibi-Usa is vastly improved. With her more annoying attributes from the last series virtually removed. The character dynamics are very strong. Especially given that the cast has become a veritable throng.

Art:

The artwork in this looks quite dated. It's not bad but it's also not to be venerated. It has the usual over-used stock footage attacks. It also spends too much time with the transformations and those are facts. That being said, the backgrounds can look pretty nice. The series also has some more active action sequences that help add spice. All things considered, it all looks decent enough. Albeit it can be a bit rough.

Sound:

The series brings back its already stellar cast. With additions for the new characters amassed. Ogata Megumi, Minaguchi Yuko & Katsuki Masako all make their appearance. Fitting in with perfect adherence. All the acting is quite terrific. With many actresses prolific. The music was composed by Arisawa Takanori and it's really good. Helping convey the mood and build the atmosphere as it should.

Ho-yay:

S has more yuri than the first two series of Sailor Moon. In that area,, the addition of Haruka & Michiru is quite the boon. These two have les-yay with all five main sailor soldiers, Haruka especially. There's even a scene where Ami, Rei, Makoto & Minako compete over which of them will dance with her when she's back from dancing with Usagi, freshly. That being said, it's their dynamic together that's truly a sight to behold. It just gets cuter as we watch it unfold. We also get Chibi-Usa and Hotaru's relationship. It's certainly no stranger to skin-ship. There's also a nice little scene where Ami gets jealous seeing Rei with another girl. Only to have really obvious relief when she discovers that it was perfectly innocent and not a romantic whirl.

Final Thoughts:

That's it for Sailor Moon S, how does it hold up? Well, it's quite strong in terms of set-up. The characters get fleshed out and developed well. Their relationships are certainly swell. The artwork holds up the least. The rest of the attributes are surprisingly uncreased. Of the three I've looked at so far, I'd say this is the best. Being a definitive cut above the rest. In terms of rating, a 9/10 is how I'd rate it. Although I'm sure, like the first series, the English dub is shit. Starting this Sunday I'll go into this year's film festival week since it seems like good timing. Although those reviews will be sans the rhyming. I'll start with Kara no Kyoukai Mirai Fukuin since starting with a KnK film has become a habit. So let's see what's in store for the world they inhabit. Thanks for sticking with me for three hundred reviews. I hope my words have helped amuse.

This is the third season of Sailor Moon, and my second favorite season of the anime.

The bad. Like the rest of the seasons, the ending was where the writers were lacking. The art style is old Toei animation, though they were getting better, probably bumping the art aspect of this to a 7/10 rather than a 6/10 like the last two seasons, which I guess is a good thing. This is also where they skimp on the awesomeness that was Sailor Saturn. Sadly enough she wasn't nearly as overpowered in the anime compared to the manga, where she destroys the universe on a whim (More ... powerful than Super Sayian God Goku). I won't go on too much of a rant about that.

The good. This was an amazing season for character development. They had one episode
[Spoiler Warning] where Minako is depressed, when I say depressed, I mean depressed. Everybody else in the group has been targeted in the group except her and the 10 year old little girl. This drives Minako to massive depression to the point where she steals the gun that literally shoots the soul from the victim and shoots herself with it to see if she had the purest heart, she didn't, the 10 year old little girl does. She proceeds to run around town trying to show off her pure heart to her friends. One of the last episodes literally has Neptune and Uranus shooting their souls out to help form the holy grail so that Sailor Moon can transform into Super Sailor moon and defeat this rendition of Pharaoh 9. Even thought he final fight isn't nearly as amazing. [Spoiler Ending]
Another thing I loved was that Vanessa Mae did parts of this soundtrack, which were just amazing, making the soundtrack way up there now. I also liked the Japanese version of the relationship between Neptune and Uranus. When I look at the English version I just laugh because it meant that the localization team prefers incest to homosexuality. It was awesome to have a homosexual couple in an medium that wasn't portrayed in an overly sexual way or as a villain. You also get some insight into the relationship between Momoru and Usagi, with a huge amount of relationship development as they go through normal couple things, things like Usagi seeing Momoru hanging out with another woman and at points keeping his distance from her so he doesn't get mad at her and say something that he doesn't mean. It also gives you a relationship between Usagi and Chibiusa that you don't generally get in the manga. This also does what the first season did well, it develops minor villains as characters rather than just having them there as a stepping stone for the Senshi, while allowing for each of the Senshi to grow as characters. This probably includes Usagi most of all.

Final Verdict:
This is a must watch. But you do have to watch the other two seasons to fully understand what is going on in this one. But everything is worth it, definitely.

Another great season of the show.

Once again, the stories were consistently interesting. One thing that sticks out about this season is that it had a significantly darker tone than the prior two seasons, with new characters Haruka/Sailor Uranus and Michiru/Sailor Neptune being much more morally ambiguous than other characters in the show, and the whole situation with Hotaru/Sailor Saturn as well. This largely worked to the show's benefit, providing a lot of great episodes. The only flaw is that sometimes the monsters-of-the-week plots largely followed a formula, but it was a good formula which they got good mileage out of, and I didn't really get ... bored by it.

The other factors that made the past seasons good were good here as well. The action scenes remained exciting and tense when they were used, the show remained great at delivering humorous or emotional moments (the latter especially was shown well thanks to the season's darker tone), and the art and animation looked very nice. The characters remained good too, as in particular Haruka is one of my favorites in the show.

And once again, there were several episodes that put it all together and knocked it out of the park, culminating in the stunning climax episode.

Overall, a great season of the show. Anyone who liked the first two should definitely watch this.

Review on Sailor Moon Season 3

So after reviewing seasons one and two, here is season number three. As always my Review is split into two parts, and is highly subjective. The fist part is about the structure, aesthetic and characters of Sailor Moon S. The second part is the conclusion where I write down what I thought worked or didn’t work and rate the anime. Also I tried to keep this review as spoiler free as possible, so if you for some reason didn’t watch it feel free to read.

Structure:
The structure is on the first view pretty much the same as the structure of ... the prior seasons. The story can be divided into 2 parts.
The first part follows the usual formula of Sailor Moon, with an episodic monster of the week structure while slowly pushing the main story forward. Just as season one and two three minor antagonists get about ten episodes where they collect this seasons equivalent of life energy in their own unique way, which just as before helps sailor moon to not become too repetitive. As in season one and two the first half of each episode focuses on daily life experiences of the girls, while the second half is all about the action. What is different from the prior seasons is the tighter focus on the narrative of each individual episode. This basically means that the characters who are present for just an episode get a bigger focus and are more developed. But more on that later. Another important remark here is that the first half of the episodes seem also to focus more on either character development and a more serious mood or on the opposite have an influx of slapstick and comedy as whole.
The second part of season three is where the focus on the main story and the main villains begins. And as such the episodic nature is disregarded to conclude the story in a fitting way.

Aesthetics: In terms of aesthetics Sailor Moon definitely improved in the animation quality. But there are two key improvements even more important than just the jump in animation quality. The first one is the way this season is presenting its characters. Especially the two new scouts, the minor antagonists and the monsters of the week. From the character designs, the soundtracks used for the new scouts and the use visual elements really helps in creating a mood surrounding these characters. Also the monsters or Daimons got some pretty crazy designs fitting the aesthetically theme of the episode., like a female (all of them are female) Daimon in the observatory wearing nothing but a star and boots. (quite sexualised compared to season one and two though) The second improvement I want to give credit to is how the defeat sequences are animated. I think these short sequences are incredibly satisfying to watch. And even if the Sailor Moon action sequences are full (one might even say overload) of reused animations the defeated sequences always felt like a small highlight of the episode.

Characters: Starting the characters off with the main cast the only thing I want to say is that this season does a good job showing the growth of the main cast, which got evident in the few character focused episodes in the beginning. Also Usagi seems to be more mature compared to prior seasons. I have earlier pointed out that the side characters for one episode were more developed than before. But on the flip side, recurring characters of season one and two get a episode of screen if they get any at all. (looking at Naru, Umino and Usagis family) But there for this season introduced two new scouts (but wait there’s more! Spoiler its kinda three and a half new scouts) who add on probably the most interesting character dynamics (plural) of the season. The minor antagonist (which were really good in season one and two) are pretty quirky and certainly funnier than prior ones but not as complex as them. They also lack the character interactions of season ones and twos minor antagonists. But don’t get me wrong they are still pretty good and do what they should. With that being said the character interactions that do happen are really interesting, ranging form silly fun to the clash of different philosophies. Oh and also there are some really important, well build up and inherently interesting character interactions with Chibiusa and a new character. Oh minor !SpoilerAlert! skip this following sentence and jump to the conclusion if you want to be completely blind. This season follows the good Sailor Moon tradition of turning a good character into an enemy for two episodes or so.

Conclusion:

Story: Good to very good 7,5/10
While still being a bit repetitive at times, the stricter focus on the once a episode characters and quirkier monsters really helped in keeping every episode fresh. The season finale also felt a bit underwhelming but this season still got a lot of interesting developments to be considered interesting.

Art: good 7/10
A pretty considerable upgrade compared to prior seasons. So that’s appreciated. Special shout-outs to the Daimon designs, (the little bit of fanservice is also appreciated by me) the defeated animation. And their unique abilities.

Sound Very good 8/10
Yeah as always, good use of the score and nice new soundtracks.

Characters: Good to very good 7,5/10
While providing interesting new characters this season also manages to show to personal progress the main cast has made. The minor antagonists are quirky and all, but lack the complexity of former antagonists. But this season has some nice (meaning no really great but a lot of good and ok) character interactions, reaching from funny to quite serious ones.

Final thoughts: I really enjoyed this season and would say that this is my favorite season of sailor moon so far. But I enjoyed this season for different reasons than season one. (Which does a way better job in building up characters and character moments I would say.) The reason I liked this season more is that each episode is interesting on an intrinsic level. The small stories of those characters who appear for just one episode where actually interesting. I was looking forward to see how the Daimon of this episode would look like and what unique ability or even character it would have. And I enjoyed seeing the Daimons getting defeated. So the main quality of this season compared to season one and two is in my opinion the lack of uninteresting episodes.

With that being said I have a problem 30/40 -->7,5/10 so 7 or 8?
tbh idc... I´ll give it a 7 to be consistent with my Sailor Moon ratings. But as always those numbers are the least important part of a review so feel free to disagree.

The Best Season of the Series!

This is the season which many consider either to be the peak of classic Sailor Moon anime or the point where they start to lose interest. I consider it to be the best but i can understand some of the frustrations some fans have with not necessarily this season but with the Sailor Moon anime adaptation as a whole. After 3 seasons Sailor Moon is still mostly the same. The whole formulaic monster of the week trope is still here but with different villains and different goals, also the only characters who get any meaningful development aside from new power ... ups or comedic focused episodes are Sailor Moon, Chibi-Usa, Sailor Uranos, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Saturn. Even Mamoru Tuxedo Mask was more of a background character this season.

In this season the new villains are looking for the three talismen which together form the Holy Grail and with the Holy Grail they can control the world. One of the main villains, professor Souichi Tomoe, is hilarious! He enjoys being a cartoon villain without any self awareness and it works the way he keeps laughing at his own failures never getting angry or depressed makes him so enjoyable to watch. The art is on par with Sailor Moon R pretty good and it gets even better during the finale episodes. The music is incredible and my favorite out of all the seasons, it's like a mix of orchestrated and upbeat 90's pop rock with beautiful vocals.

Usagi is still her usual self, she is clumsy and naive like always and is shown in this season to even go as far as almost cheating on Mamoru which is hilarious given the circumstances in the episode. Her relationship with Mamoru is still cute and strong but also has some dramatic moments. But she also shows her friends that she wants to change her clumsy behavior and wants to be a better person. Sailor Moon gets a new form that makes her stronger but also, i don't know, still the same i guess? This idea from the 90's where everything has to have a "Super" form or transformation worked very well for other anime like DBZ but in Sailor Moon it's not all that memorable. There is also a subplot of finding the "Messiah" which ends up being very obvious and lackluster of how things wrap up in the finale.

Chibi-Usa is back and has matured quite a bit since R. This time she actually has her own Sailor Soldier transformation and is even cuter than before with her silly attacks. The 4 original Sailor Soldiers do get their own dedicated episodes, most of which, are fillers but despite that they're really worth watching. Sailor Mars keeps getting visions of the end of the world and tries to warn the others about this but doesn't really do much about it as the show continues. Venus gets an episode in which she is sad that the villains don't go after her pure heart. I'm not a fan of how Venus is now even dumber than Usagi sometimes but i do like the episode where she dressed up as Sailor Moon it was really fun.

Sailor Uranus and Neptune episodes are the best part of this season along with Sailor Pluto and Saturn joining later on. Uranus and Neptune have clear goals and don't play around, they don't act with their emotions unlike the Sailor Soldiers which might make them seem cold and maybe even look like bad guys but they are actually friendly as long as you don't get in their way. They're also hinted to be lovers which was unexpected, especially at the time this released but it's handled with such class that makes this season so cool and memorable.

Obviously, both the Inner and Outer Senshi don't make the connection of their secret identities until the last arc but by now that is how Sailor Moon works. Sailor Pluto is back from R and shows to be very capable of fighting and defending the planet. She doesn't say much but like Uranus and Neptune, she prioritizes her mission before anything else and is the most mature and most respected of the team, i really like the relationships in this season.

Finally, Sailor Saturn is the only one that's a wasted character. Hotaru is very shy and lovely and because of her past she doesn't really know how to act around people. I don't know if Sailor Moon S went overbudget but i really wanted to see Saturn do more other than just talk and then disappear.

In conclusion, Sailor Moon S is a good balace of drama and comedy, the characters have clear goals and dynamic relationships, the music is my favorite yet, the storytelling is very tight despite having the least amount of episodes this is definitely the strongest and my favorite season. But the Messiah subplot didn't have any major impact. Also the ending with the villains, Sailor Saturn and Sailor Moon was incredibly disappointing, it could've been so much better. It didn't have to end like Seasons 1 and 2 but it could've shown even just a bit more than it did. Despite that, this is the most fun i've had watching Sailor Moon yet.

Season 3 of a TV show is often the "make or break" season and for "Sailor Moon" it was no different. Did they succeed? Sort of.

"Sailor Moon S" expands the universe again with the introduction of more Sailor Scouts, the mysterious rogue duo, Uranus and Neptune. These new (and controversial) two provide a much-needed contrast from the happy-go-lucky main group and have the seriousness and professionalism one with such power and responsibilities probably should take. In addition, the adversaries introduced are led by one of my all-time favorite villains; Dr. Tomoe. A character who exudes menace and intimidates while still keeping it light with moments ... of corny, over-the-top, laughter and bizarre behavior. This guy (and his story arc) are the main reason "Sailor Moon S" is my personal favorite of all the installments.

As refreshing as the new characters are, the season itself is still very flawed. Suffering from the same cliches and cookie-cutter episodes as the rest. The bad guys plan of "collect a bunch of stuff to unleash an evil darkness that will black out the light and reign for a... blah, blah, blah..." got tired after Season 2. And going up the chain of command towards an eventual final showdown after almost 40 episodes is still a grind, especially when they continue to re-use the same sequences to save on the art budget. The overall art and voice acting showed a little improvement, but is still just okay.

Overall, adding a few new and decent characters does keep the momentum of this show going, but all they really did was give the same Barbie doll of a franchise some new toys. You know it's becoming a problem when you can't tell the difference between episodes of seasons because of how generic they're getting. Still, with all it's shortcomings, I did enjoy "Sailor Moon S" more than I did the previous two installments. I recognize it's nothing special, but I had fun. 7/10. Check it out. Cheers!

Alas, it continued to be good.

Story:
Sailor Moon S is the third season in the well-loved anime, famously known as Sailor Moon. It was refreshing to see our main character, Usagi face challenges she had never faced before and we the viewer can see her growing as a person when she steps out of her comfort zone. It also had a beautifully done emotional ending as well.

Art:
The art is a very aesthetically pleasing 90's anime vibe. I love the attention to detail that every character has more than one outfit. However, it was a little hard to tell the difference between Moon with her ... hair down and Venus.

Sound:
The use of the main theme song playing slowly in the background during a calming scene was so serene. The theme song is very catchy and I personally sing it all the time. Sailor Moon is one of the only animes where the English Theme Song is better than the original.

Character:
It was hard to pick a favourite character! Each of the main characters was so intricate yet had their own touch to them. The side villains, however, were pretty silly and didn't really scare anyone with this being a show aimed more towards kids. The main villains were cruel and cunning, their victims' trauma was almost too much to bear!

Enjoyment:
My enjoyment was very high. I can strongly recommend Sailor Moon to any fan wanting to start or wanting to continue the series.

So this is the fan favourite season of Sailor Moon and for good reason. Its got a good story, introduced memorable new characters, and the super from for Sailor Moon, Super Sailor Moon. This arc in general is probably my favourite in this franchise.

Story - Shortly after the events of R, Rei has an apocalyptic vision. Then the Sailor Soldiers face their new enemies, the Death Busters. They want to steal people's pure heart crystals in order to get the three talismans, which would then summon the Holy Grail. The story for this was really good. It could get intense ... at times, especially towards the finale. I'm giving the story a 9/10

Art - The art was beautiful as always. 10/10

Sound - As usual, the soundtrack was pretty good. 8/10

Character - Three new Senshi are introduced in this season - Haruka Tenoh, who is Sailor Uranus, Michiru Kaioh who is Sailor Neptune, and Hotaru Tomoe who is Sailor Saturn. Sailor Pluto also returns as Setsuna Meioh and together they make the Outers. I love the Outers so much. Haruka and Michiru especially mean so much to me. It was because of them that I discovered that I was a lesbian. Their romance was so beautiful and I enjoyed every moment they were on screen. My only complaint was how mean they could get. The scene where Haruka steals Usagi's brooch was so unnecessary and mean spirited. And the scene where they say Usagi has no qualifications to be their future Queen.... sheesh I know it was to test her power but still.
Hotaru is my absolute favourite of this season, she's just so precious and deserves all the happiness in the world. Her friendship with Chibiusa was so beautiful.
Speaking of which, Chibiusa returns in this season as Sailor Chibi Moon. She comes back from the future to train to be a Senshi. She was still bratty but she wasn't as bad as she was in R. Her friendship with Hotaru was honestly what made me ultimately love her.
As for the villains, I didn't care much for Kaolinite. Eudial was hilarious with the way she would make her appearance by driving in unusual places. Mimete was pretty annoying. The other three - Tellu, Viluy, and Cyprine - didn't get enough episodes for me to form an opinion on them. I do wish the Witches 5 actually worked as a team once instead of fighting with each other.
As for Souichi Tomoe, I don't understand how they took his manga self, who was abusive to Hotaru and even experimented on her, and made him this sympathetic man who just wanted to save his daughter. Yeah, the anime does this with villains in the manga but given how he was in the manga, I feel Souichi is one of those villains who didn't deserve that.
Mistress 9 was pretty good, its too bad we didn't get to see her much.
Characters get an 8/10.

Enjoyment - I really enjoyed this season and I can definitely see why it is a fan favourite. 9/10

Overall - Sailor Moon S is a great season that introduced a bunch of amazing characters and had a great story. 9/10

After a pretty uninteresting Sailor Moon R (with the first 13 episodes being a filler to wait for the manga and an annoying chibiusa), this series is a relief. The new characthers, Neptune and Uranus are pretty interesting, in opposition to Chibiusa's addition in R. There is a purpose for them being there and a nice arc of development.
But at some point, the series gets very boring. The episodes are pretty much the same, with obvious messages like "the power of friendship" and the same structure in every episode. This screentime could have been used to focus on the inner senshi, that just got some ... attention in the beggining. Or mix with some school life moments of Usagi. Naru and Umino just disappear. There is almost no development on the charachters as "common girls".
The last thing I'd like to highlight here is that all the final action happens in few episodes. The climax could have been extended a bit more, to explore better the closing stages.

I recommend anyone watching the sailor moon series or is into magical girl series to watch this season.
I already knew some of the characters that were coming this season, and I'm really glad they brought back Sailor Chibi Moon. She brings in more comedy into the series but also helps with the second arc and its pacing. I'm glad that they had Pluto come into the series as a fighting sailor as well instead of just being trapped to guarding time and space.
I was super excited to see all the new characters and their art, but also explore new elements of the sailor guardians.
I ... do wish that they would switch up the spells for the sailors more in the series, but that was somewhat accomplished in the end.
Overall, this was a pretty good season of Sailor Moon and I plan to keep watching.
Great series to download on Hulu and binge during school :')

This is my favorite season of Sailor Moon. If you want to see the show at it's best and you don't want to watch it all, I would recommend watching this season.

The story is more exciting and complex than previous seasons, the characters have a bit more depth, and the art is very good too. I also think the villains have more depth in this season than in previous ones. Though many of the villains throughout the series have backstories, I think in this season they are more relatable.

Something that the series does suffer from is that it does have a lot of filler. It ... is a "monster of the day" sort of anime, with a lot of interpersonal, relationship stuff interspersed in it. It works just fine for what it is, but if you find that tedious, you should probably skip the series.

I would recommend this season for young teenagers, although most children who watched the previous seasons would probably also enjoy it.
