An ambitious movie but with poor pacing.

The story’s pacing is not great. The first few minutes were really good, it showed the utopian world very well. Unfortunately after that the pacing was really slow, it just started introducing the characters, and all the side characters seem boring, the uncle, Kenchi, Tina, the villian, and it was really slow. The two main characters Kenchi and Tina are interesting though. The places explored by Kenchi and Tina were shown really well and the new zones in metropolis are shown in great detail.

THe second half was amazing, there’s a surprising moment I won’t spoil. Then the pace moved ...

I urge anyone who's interested in this anime to watch it. I think the top couple of reviews are being much to critical of the film. Although the story of this film is mostly symbolic and a bit off a mess, and the characters don't have much depth, the world this film creates is more than enough of a reason to watch it.

With a team of veteran filmmakers behind metropolis, it's no wonder that every frame of animation is a joy to look at. For a film made in 2001 it still holds up incredibly well today. The colors are vibrant, the detail is ...

In the year 2001 the studio Madhouse decided to make a film of the manga of Osamu Tezuka which in turn is the adaptation of the famous German film.

I will clarify things from the beginning: Is Metropolis a bad movie? - No, it's not a bad movie; Is it a good movie? - No, it's far from being a good movie.

Let's remove the obvious things and then talk more about this peculiar film, Metropolis is a wonderful movie, the Tezuka design gives it an incredible personality and makes it stand out easily from many other futuristic films also the background art and the level of ...

Artificial consciousness. Emotions. Empathy. Power. Scientific Development. Religion. Segregation. Fascism. With all these themes, the show looks like a 2010s movie, but it's a 60s story by the manga God Tezuka Osamu, and, combined with the visionary, beautiful and well-worked direction of the anime God Otomo Katsuhiro, Metropolis is, by far, one of the best movies ever made.

Story: 8/10
The plot is perfect, seems like a Urasawa Naoki manga and the conceptual social sci-fi was well-placed, combining mythology and science, like every Otomo's pieces. It's a political movie, so, the ideological discussions being so well-wrote has increased a lot more.
The only defect I can find in ...

When I heard that Metropolis was a really good movie from reviewers, I had to pick it up at the library and try it. Highly disappointed I found it to be extremely boring.

The story revolves around a city named Metropolis, a city filled with creation, structure, and many action. There is one scientist named Dr. Laughton, a Japanese detective named Shunsaku and his nephew Kenicihi. Soon, they arrive at Metropolis and the scientist (I guess or whatshisface) creates a robotic girl named Tima. Kenicichi befriends this girl and decides to help her through the dangers of the city.

Since I'm a child, ...

After a long intro, we get a interesting little piece like a dictator and then a futuristic looking town I could only believe was based on New York. Something about this show makes me feel that he was trying to comment on the social structure and where it’s going. It’s the natural thing of people in high power pushing down the lower class as they head to the top.

Each of the characters that actually have a big part to play in this show actually has nice personalities even though they sometimes fall into a norm. Tezuka always had an interesting way of mixing robots ...

Ah! Metropolis. I only watched this movie because I love the original by Fritz Lang (1927). This movie is inspired by that. That movie is a fricking masterpiece. A silent movie. (Ahem! 1927). It was one of the first silent movies that I watched, so it was obvious that it had to be an 'experience' in my life. The original had a good story to tell. A good message. (Won't Spoil). And this movie too tried have that similar kind of impact on the audience in 2001. I won't say that it failed but that I didn't love the execution.

This movie is very different ...

First what I want to say is Motoko from Ghost in the Shell, Alita from Gunnm, or Dorothy from The Big O are more compelling characters. Actually my favourites in anime/manga or even in entertainment media overall. Tima has a basic plotline. Being the highly intelligent robot that rebels in the end. You can sympathize her when she has got saved by Kenichi, but when she goes berserk I just don't care. We have seen such plot in most robot movies. Even if mechanical life is possible and artificial intelligence may be real, if a robot is malicious it is an enemy. ...

Well, for an adaptation of the classic silent movie by Fritz Lang, this movie hit the spot right on.

The story, while being way different from the original one, still takes place in the same city but with more mature subjects.

The soundtrack and voice acting are great, but not perfect (some voices are a little too quiet).

The animation, in one word: gorgeous!

Overall, if I had to compare these two versions, both are worthy of deserving a gold medal, but personally I would give it to the 1927 version. Why? Because I re-saw this movie in concert in a cathedral two years ago with an organ improvising ...

Metropolis displays a fairly standard cyberpunk story mixed with jazz music and has the look and feel of an early 20th century scifi.

Story: In an age where robots are omnipresent and discriminated against, a mad scientist creates a new perfect being destinated to rule the world.... *yawns*. The story was simplistic, rushed, highly predictible (I could figure out everything in advance...) and with almost 0 character development. It is also very slow paced and could have fit in half the time. If you want an anime that keeps you on your toes, this is not the one. At least the story makes sense and flows ...

A wonderfully beautiful, but terrible adaptation. Given the richness of the source material and the global promotion that ran behind it, "Metropolis" shines as a true disappointment for feature length anime.

"Metropolis" was heavily hyped(globally) and anticipated for its time, even being said to be the "heir to AKIRA", and with several large names attached to the production. Upon release it was immediately forgotten and for good reason. No one talks about this movie now, outside of its amazing visuals and flowing animation.

While visually stunning, the story and characters are an absolute mess.

The ending is so abrupt and over the top without resolving ANY of the ...

Metropolis is an anime movie that started showing in Japan on May 26, 2002. It is loosely based on Osamu Tezuka's manga Metropolis, which itself is inspired by 1927 German silent film of the same name. The movie was produced by studio Madhouse, and it was directed by Rintaro, who's directed things like Galaxy Express 999 movie.

The story takes place in the great city of Metropolis, where life is easy and everything is great. Or is it? Beneath a facade of splendor lies dark world of prejudice, unrest, and violence. Because, in the city of Metropolis, humans and robots live together side by side, and ...

"Every epoch dreams its successor."

Metropolis is a visually striking film based off of the manga of the same name from 1949, which in turn was inspired by a single frame from the 1927 Fritz Lang movie. This 2001 film feels like it completes the cycle taking the best from both materials and weaving it into a movie exploring pervasive themes of class struggle in a dystopian plutocratic society and expands it to examine the relationship of robots with their human masters. The film removes some elements of the original manga the most notable example is the flying, gender-swapping humanoid Mitchi is removed in favour of ...

Everything is so detailed and lively. The backgrounds look superb and the character animations look great.

Still, I wished the characters had more time to talk to one another given how they're never in the same place longer than a few minutes. I enjoyed the voice acting and the interactions between Kenichi and Tima specifically.I would've liked Rock to bicker with Kenichi given their contrasting views about Tima. In other words, I wish the characters would've been more fleshed out and show the audience how they bounce off one another throughout the course of the movie.

It's got lots of social commentary about lower class making ...

Finally completed, this awful abomination. Rintaro strikes again (first neo tokyo, then final fantasy and now this shit.) He has no idea that movie should be presentable to audience. It looks awful shit and painful to watch. I actually had to watch it 3 times just so that I could wouldn't get distracted by his presentation and focus my eyes and brain of the story.

This movie biggest problem is the "viewpoint". whenever there is character interaction or speech, normally anime are supposed to show character's face at close up view. but this this movie does the opposite. There are 3 ways this movie sets the ...

I really enjoyed this film. End to end it kept me engaged in story whilst the animation continued to be stunning throughout.

Animation wise, this reminded me a lot of the style from Porco Rosso. Its like it has hints of Disney whilst rooted in Japanese animation. This films animation is stunning. Everything moves fluidly, the characters, I feel anyway, are nicely designed and have their own originality. As we journey through the film we are treated to variety. The environments vary in a nicely contrasting way, the above ground segments looks vibrant and full of life and the below ground environment look dull and devoid ...

This film is an enigma to me. The visuals and its scope held a lasting impression, the climax/ending scene alone replays in my mind over and over again. Meticulous work was put into every frame of the animation, rivaling that of films such as Akira or End of Eva. Despite the enticing visuals, its story is hardly memorable. The plot is a cluttered mess and the characters are very one-note, which really hinders the enjoyment factor. The film suffers from the same predicament as the Akira movie, where it's attempting to tell the story of a multi-volume manga in an hour and a half. Despite ...

This movie is a lot like Akira, Except the story makes a lot more sense and is easier to follow. The art style and characters are lot more colorful too. This movie basically felt like Akira: for kids. Even though there's still a pretty heavy tone and a good amount of violence. The actual animations I would say are on par with Akira. But because it was made in 2001 some of the cgi looks funny by modern standards. There were parts where it just looked like sprites dancing on top of a picture of a lego circuit board. To me that's part of it's ...

Metropolis is a movie doing everything wrong. And I am not talking about the production values, which are great by the way. I am referring to the aesthetics, a complete mess of ideas and sceneries that strike a chord in all the wrong places and moments. It could definitely be a fine title, if it was aware of the way it presented itself. It could be great if it was:
1) a series instead of a movie. It has a very heavy on themes story yet only movie-worth of duration to show them. This obviously takes away a lot from what it could have been if ...

I've never seen a film like Metropolis before, and I mean that in the best and worst ways. It is seriously difficult to describe, and having just finished it ten minutes ago, I have no idea how to explain what even happens in this film. The TL;DR is don't watch this if you're expecting a typical cyberpunk shounen like I was. But if you're into experimental, odd, or just plain weird shit you may actually really love this film.

THE BAD
There's zero character development. No-one, from the villains to the heroes to the side-characters have narrative depth. We know nothing of any character's backstory or motivation, ...
