A very moving and beautiful anime about life.
Your Lie in April focuses on its characters, and how they affect each other, and this is shown brilliantly. With Kousei you could see how his mother’s death has affected him, resulting him in becoming a very shy boy who no longer sees the wonder and colour in life. Kaori is bright and bubbly, but gradually you learn more about her life and struggles. Yet even with her challenges she wants to make a difference to the lives around her, especially Kousei, and through their interactions not only do they learn from each other, but we as the
...
audience learn so much from them as well. Tsubaki, Kousei’s childhood friend was developed quite well, although Watari (Kousei’s friend) could of had more screen time.
Your Lie in April is both moving and entertaining. It focuses a lot on the character’s challenges, like when Kousei is practicing the piano, Tsubaki learning more about herself or Kaori going through her difficulties, watching them face their challenges makes us care about them even more. The jokes are spot on and hilarious, I really like how the animation quality changes depending on whether it’s a serious moment or not.
Visually the series is stunning, and the music is fantastic. The colours are bright and colourful when needed, and dull during the darker moments. There is an extremely high level of detail during the music performances, while the animation remains consistently very high quality. The classical music choices are brilliant, and the original soundtrack fits the scenes perfectly.
Although it felt like Emi and Takeshi (Kousei’s piano rivals) got too much screen time, although this is only a minor issue. It felt like they didn’t add much to the main plot, although they are reasonably interesting and relatable characters.
Your Lie in April is a highly character driven and emotional story. Your Lie in April is about grief, and life. It teaches us what it really means to be alive, and what’s important in life. The characters are extremely well developed and the themes are explored well. Your Lie In April is an amazing series.

A very entertaining and at times moving romance, although not without its flaws.
Relife does a pretty good job balancing out comedy, entertainment and the more serious moments. The humour is usually spot on, although there were some jokes which were dragged on too long during the first few episodes. The series also delves into more serious topics really well like social isolation and self esteem. Relife was usually well paced, especially towards the later episodes where it focused on specific characters and their challenges.
The characters are all very likeable and relatable. Each character gets their moment in the spotlight, so we get to learn more
...
about them and their insecurities. Arata, (a 27 year old who takes a pill to turn 10 years younger) for example at first seems to be a young adult struggling to find a job after he quit his previous one, but later on we learn more about his past and how it has continued to affect him now. Although some of the character’s development felt rushed as we learn nearly everything about them all at once without getting to know them prior to that episode.
The stories of the characters are presented really well. Most episodes focus on a specific character and their personal struggles, and how they cope with it. Whether it’s about a crush, or coming to terms with the past, the challenges the characters face makes them more relatable and makes us care about them even more.
Relife is a really good romance with lots of entertaining moments, although there are times the quality drops. Nevertheless Relife has some fantastic characters and stories to tell, and is well worth watching.
Any constructive feedback is appreciated :)

A fantastic slice of life romance anime that shows the challenges of high school extremely well.
The characters are all very likable and relateable. Toradora primarily focuses on Taiga Aisaka, a girl who’s very aggressive at times and yet kind as well, and Ryuuji Takasu, who helps look after his mother and takes care of Taiga. Everyone has their own personal challenges which are very relatable, whether it’s a first crush, or just trying to get along with your friends and classmates. The interactions between the characters are shown in a very natural and entertaining way, whether they’re hanging out at school or in a restaurant,
...
or having a heart to heart conversation.
Toradora is paced really well so it always remains interesting. It consists of meaningful story arcs which focuses on a specific character/story each. The stories told reflect their school lives and challenges brilliantly, like dealing with parents, or high school crushes.
The music is generally spot on, it often consists of a simple piano or electronic melody which compliment the scene well. Although at times the electronic sounds were a bit too overused at times, especially during the more emotional scenes.
Overall this is a brilliant slice of life romance anime about high school students.

Your Name is a brilliantly and beautifully made anime. Shinkai is well known for long distance romances, and Your Name is no exception.
The story is executed really well. This is a body swap romance story that shows how Mitsushi and Taki gradually get to know each other by living in each others bodies. It is well paced and shows how their lives interacted and what their daily lives were like effectively. The gradual buildup to the climax is executed brilliantly and was certainly an emotional rollercoaster.
Although I wished there was more character depth. Mitsuha and Taki’s character’s were never really explored, and their motivations and
...
personal struggles weren’t shown much. This certainly made it more difficult to relate to the characters. However all the characters are very likeable and showed their personalities and day to day challenges in a way which is very relatable.
The animation was brilliant, the amount of detail to every scene was phenomenal, from the outdoor scenes, to Tokyo city. This is very similar to Shinkai’s previous films as well.
Your Name is a fantastic drama romance story, the characters could of been explored more but I would still highly recommend this film, especially if you’re a fan of Shinkai’s films.
Any constructive feedback would be appreciated :)

When Marnie Was There is a beautiful film about what it’s like to feel alone. After learning that this may be Studio Ghibli’s last film, I was saddened as they have made some amazing films, and When Marnie Was There is one of their best films.
Anna's character development is brilliant. This film has one of the best character developments I’ve seen in any movie. Anna starts out very shy, doesn't have any friends, and yet she doesn't make any attempt to be more social. She's just accepted she's forever on the "outside", until she meets Marnie and realises the importance of friendship, and that she
...
isn’t actually alone. It was great to see Anna becoming more open and friendly over time. It makes her relatable showing her struggles of socialising as a teenager and ultimately makes us the viewer care about her.
This is very slow paced, yet it always manages to keep the viewer's interest. The first forty minutes of the film focuses on Anna, and her struggles of just trying to fit in with other kids her age, and struggling with her identity as a foster child. A lot of this time is focused on how much Anna hates herself,, even in the first scene at school she states just how much she hates herself, while watching everyone inside some social group, while she remains outside.
After Anna meets Marnie the film picks up the pace, which leads to an exciting climax. There are many scenes where Marnie and Anna are doing seemingly uneventful things, like picking mushrooms or just talking on a boat. Over time they get closer we get to learn about their personal struggles. And we realise that what we first think of people isn’t always true. When the climax occurs, we realise just how much Anna and Marnie care about each other.
The animation is fantastic. Everything is really detailed, especially during the outside scenes, like the sea during nighttime, and even the character’s facial expressions are very clear here and it’s easy to see how they are feeling.
This film isn’t without it’s flaws, although they are minor. It’s arguable whether it’s believable that Anna and Marnie became such close friends in such a short time, and it may have been nice to see them spend more time together. This movie is slow paced, especially the first 40 minutes, although it kept my interest, the slow pacing may not suit all viewers.
This is a fantastic film which follows a lonely young girl who realises that she’s not alone. If this is Studio Ghibli’s last film, they certainly ended with one of their best.

This is a simple love story. This story is really about finding your purpose in life, it has great main characters, unfortunately the plot and side characters let the story down.
Shizuku’s character is developed extremely well. She’s completely lost in life and doesn’t know what to do, until Seiji, an student at her school, encourages her to follow her passion. She discovers her passion after her struggling to figure out what to do in life. Her struggles of finding a sense of purpose in lifeis highly relateble to anyone.
Seiji is an interesting character, but isn’t explored well. Seiji is not on screen much, so
...
it’s hard to feel for him as a character. Also most of the other charactesrs aren’t interesting at all, like Shizuku’s best friend at school, her sister, mother and father are all one dimensional characters. Although Seiji’s grandfather was a nice addition to the cast, he would often give useful advice to Shizuku, and has an interesting backstory too.
The plot is very simple, and show’s Shizuku character well, although Shizuku’s and Suiji’s relationship felt too rushed. Getting to see Shizuku change and pursue her passion was very interesting, and heartfelt. There are also some cute scenes with Shizuku and Suiji, like when they play music together, or when the class is discussing rumours. Although it would of been nice to see them spend more time together
Visually the shots are stunning. Whether it’s overlooking the city, or in her room. And the music choice is very fitting, especially concrete road, a parody of country road is quite humorous and very entertaining.
This film is definitely worth watching if you’re into romances and slow paced movies, and it certainly does make you think of the meaning of your life, and to follow your dreams.

This is a very fun and cute movie.
This is a very entertaining movie, I was pretty much smiling the whole time watching it. All the characters are very likeable from the five year old boy Sosuke and his mum Lisa, and even the minor characters like the residents of the rest home. The movie is well paced with a strong eco friendly theme throughout shown through many amazing shots of underwater scenes, and them being destroyed by man. The importance of love and being together is also emphasised in the movie, shown really well with Ponyo, Sosuke and their families.
Constructive feedback is appreciated :)

An ambitious movie but with poor pacing.
The story’s pacing is not great. The first few minutes were really good, it showed the utopian world very well. Unfortunately after that the pacing was really slow, it just started introducing the characters, and all the side characters seem boring, the uncle, Kenchi, Tina, the villian, and it was really slow. The two main characters Kenchi and Tina are interesting though. The places explored by Kenchi and Tina were shown really well and the new zones in metropolis are shown in great detail.
THe second half was amazing, there’s a surprising moment I won’t spoil. Then the pace moved
...
faster and Tina starts struggling with her identity, which was really interesting, and it was fascinating watching how she dealt with this.
The story was good, and the themes questions what does it mean to be human is shown very well. A highly ambitious movie with great world building, but poor pacing in the first half.
Constructive feedback is appreciated :)

This is a fantastic movie. The plot is interesting, it's well paced, and the characters are likeable.
The plot is well paced and interesting, the action sequences are well shot, while having time for quiet moments like when Sheeta and Pazu are in the cave. The movie is well structured and leads to the next section nicely, like in the first part the crystal and sheeta are introduced, while in the next part we learn more about the crystal and Laputa.
The characters are interesting and likeable, especially Sheeta. Pazu is a likeable who is hard working and compassionate, like when he helps Sheeta. Sheeta is also
...
compassionate, but what makes her special is the movie shows her vulnerable side which makes her more relatable, most notably when she makes a mistake involving the amulet, how she feels after this makes her more relatable. The main antagonist Muska, a government agent isn't very interesting and isn't explored much.
The plot itself is very simple, it's just about finding Laputa, as an adventure it explores many areas which kept the plot interesting.
This is a very good movie.

This is a very slow uneventful movie, it shows their high school lives in great detail really well. Like how the students reacted when a school trip was cancelled, or the everyday intereractions and bullying at school. There were certainly interesting events like a sudden trip to Tokyo, and lots of slapping. The start of the movie very little happens. Although the movie picks up the pace when Rikako asks Taku for money, which leads to a series of events.
However the characters are not very likeable. The main character Taku, he does some incredibly stupid things that make him unlikeable, Rikako is a more
...
interesting character especially when we learn more about her parents and what life was like for her before going to her current school. Excluding Rikako all the characters seem rather one dimensional, like Taku’s friend who seems to be a nice guy and that’s it, while Taku is both nice and stupid at times.
The film also lacks a clear sense of direction, a purpose. The film shows the scenes about Taku and Rikako, and their high school lives, and that's it. Although it does reflect their high school experience reasonably well. It also results in a film that can feel rather too slow at times.
The music choice, especially the main theme is odd and doesn't suit the moment. It uses a ringtone like theme which sounds out of place. The animation is very simple and suits the film well.
This film reflects the characters’ high school life well, although it's unlikeable characters and barely existent plot makes this a disappointing viewing for a Studio Ghibli film.
