Kuro no Shoukanshi

To prepare for reincarnation in another world, Kelvin gives up select memories from his previous life in exchange for powerful abilities, additional skill points, and an S-class summoner title. As a bonus, the goddess facilitating his rebirth, Melfina, offers him a choice of any companion to give him a head start in his summoner role. Kelvin—who has fallen head over heels for Melfina at first sight—promptly chooses the deity, confident that his passionate feelings for her will resurface even without all of his memories.

Kelvin embarks on his exciting new journey with Melfina as his guide. However, in order to summon his beloved goddess' physical form, he needs to acquire significant amounts of mana points—and the best way to accomplish this is to level up by fighting strong enemies and making contracts with even stronger companions.

This show is one of my "guilty pleasures" and something I have no issue re-watching on occasion.

Although it is not a show that rocks the boat, or adds anything particularly new to the isekai genre, following most of the tried-and-tested tropes and clichés very closely, I still find it an enjoyable experience, even now on my 4th or so re-watch of it.

What I like about this show, especially compared to isekai that has aired in the 2+ years since Black Summoner released, is that each character gets ample screen-time and growth. They aren't one-note talking heads that only serve to glaze the MC at every ... turn; Each one has their own personality and backstory.

Now yes, a lot of the main cast are women and there are obviously harem elements in this story, but the MC, at least in this season, doesn't involve himself in that way with any of them. It's not done in the "clueless idiot" way, where the ladies are basically telling him to sleep with them and he still doesn't get it, as Kelvin does know their feelings, it's more done in the way that he doesn't want to overstep his boundaries as party leader, especially given that the women are also mostly his familiars. There's also no out-of-place ecchi here either and, to my recollection, no real fan-service scenes or elements; There is a swimsuit segment, because of course there had to be, but it's done tastefully and has a narrative reason to exist.
We also have a male in the main cast who is done surprisingly well here too, compared to most isekai. He's not thrown to the side as a wannabe or jealous-type, he's a core member of the squad and actually goes through a nice bit of development over the season.

I also think the story, although by no means genre-defining, has just enough of a twist to it, to also allow the show to be more enjoyable than most isekai slop we see year-on-year. Although reincarnated and OP by the end, Kelvin isn't a hero on a grand crusade to kill the demon king, he's just a super strong adventurer doing the jobs he wants, when he wants. We do meet the actual heroes in this season and the growth they show, thanks to Kelvin, is also nicely portrayed.

Speaking of growth, although Kelvin is obviously OP, I still think him becoming OP is shown and developed much, much better than many trash isekai that predated this show, or have come since its release.

Lastly, before I delve into spoiler territory, I think, especially compared to a lot of other isekai, that the art and animation are good quality here and, although I might be in the minority, I even consider the CGI to be decent in this show. It's not overused and it has a sort-of video-game quality to it, which I find quite fitting. It certainly isn't Overlord or Berserk levels of CGI that's for sure (which might be why I think it's OK to Good here).

Overall, I'll rate this an 8/10, as I have watched it multiple times over and still find it an enjoyable watch.

Mixed Feelings

This anime is a pretty generic isekai with an overpowered protagonist. This time around, he gives up all the memories of his past life in order to gain more skill points, which is part of how he ends up overpowered. Despite not having any background I think he is a decent enough protagonist, but nothing too special. I really do like his name though, Kelvin Celsius. Its so dumb its actually kind of genius.

Anyway, for the most part he’s the standard hero, but he’s also a battle junky that does pretty wild things just to fight strong foes. The writing frames this as enough to ... make him as somewhat of an anti-hero, but he always prioritizes doing good over his battle seeking, so that doesn’t really work all that well. He’s also technically a Summoner, but in standard OP MC isekai fashion his power set is pretty arbitrary and full of a medley of overpowered abilities. As such, he’s basically just a generic protagonist for the genre but with some crazy battle hungry moments.

Beyond that the anime does quite a lot, and does mostly all of it decently. But it doesn’t really do anything well. Plot wise there’s two overarching threads. The first is relating to the rise of a new Demon King while the second is in relation to a nearby militant nation trying to take over the continent. Both seem interesting enough in broad strokes, but neither gets fleshed out properly and very little progress is made in either. The anime just kind of ends at some point without really feeling like any sort of conclusion.

Character wise, everyone in Kelvin’s party seems to have some sort of background that shapes their personalities and motivations. However, after this background is introduced, the characters don’t really seem to grow at all beyond that. Kelvin does have a sort of harem dynamic going on with three members of his party. But the moments that play into that are incredibly rare, and the vast majority of the time it doesn’t feel like there’s any romantic attraction between them. There are also a decent amount of comedic moments, but overall they’re not that amusing.

The action goes deep on stats and specific abilities at first, but as things progress its just random nonsense. The overpowered moments are fine, but they don’t really hit the right tone and atmosphere most of the time. The action is well animated and choreographed, except for the heavy use of CG. To be honest, I think the CG generally looks fine, except for when its used with human characters, in which case it is terrible. Beyond that the art and animation were decent enough but not particularly great. The character designs are pretty generic but not bad.

The OP was really good in terms of visuals and the song. The ED was also solid enough, though I’d have to say I prefer the first song version to the second. The OP/ED also do this thing where they hide what a character looks like until she gets introduced within the show itself, but that felt kind of pointless since how she looked like didn’t really matter anymore than how any of the other characters looked like and it didn’t hide them. The soundtrack was just okay, but had some pretty great battle tracks.

tl;dr: A generic isekai that’s good enough in most things but doesn’t do anything particularly well.

the art is boring and uninspired, and they use really jarring cg for this one character whenever they appear, as well as a few other minor characters. they switch the animation to this ugly, half-assed 3d style during some of the fights, sometimes switching back to 2d at random.

the music is unremarkable and only serves to provide a vague sense of being in a fantasy setting.

the storytelling is genuinely awful, going from a potentially interesting premise to terribly-paced events happening for no reason in particular. no particular scene feels like it has any importance, and by the end of the season, it feels like almost ... nothing has happened.

the characters are possibly the worst part because they pretend to have depth while being shallow misogynistic props for the viewer's self-insert wish-fulfillment. the protagonist has no outstanding goals apart from a vague need to get stronger because of his love for battle and to rebuild his past life's experience as a japanese person. these are both left completely unexplained, especially his desire for japanese comforts, since his memory was supposed to have been wiped. the show also decided to make his love for battle into an extremely unfunny running gag, for whatever reason. the two non-harem main cast members are largely irrelevant, with one basically serving as a walkie-talkie and storage back, and the other just kind of showing up sometimes. then, the women only exist to be deeply infatuated with the protagonist, with nothing bridging the gap between meeting them for the first time and desperately wanting to sleep with him. and of course, the protagonist is always kind, righteous, and admirable, and all of his opponents are irredeemably evil, again, for no particular reason.
