School Rumble San Gakki

It has certainly been one long ride! Two anime seasons, an OVA, and the supposed third season known as San Gakki.

We all start by getting thrown into an arc of the manga leagues ahead of where Ni Gakki left off. Needless to say you will be completely lost unless you have been following the School Rumble manga. To make a rather long and tedious story short, this "OVA" combines some of the most defining moments of the manga, to what made the manga a complete wreck in the first place. We have Harima's defining moment as a man to the inevitable train wreck known ... as School Rumble.

Then comes the art section of this review. I was rather (well completely) disappointed at how the first episode (episode 25) was animated. I expected so much more in terms of quality from an OVA (botched 3rd season). Though I gave the score of '7' given that the second episode (episode 26) completely redeemed the failures of the previous episode. You should be able to see the differences between the two episodes if you decide to watch this OVA.

Then we have the sound section. Nothing really new given that they pretty much reused the tracks of School Rumble Season One and Ni Gakki.

As I have mentioned before, this OVA combines the most defining moments of the manga as well as what made it an epic failure in the first place. When it is all said and done, everything boils down to character development. Even if you haven't read the parts of the manga this OVA covers, you will know how our protagonist (smack yourself if you think I'm talking about Tenma) develops over the course of the second episode. Then prepare to facepalm near the final moments of the episode as the author of this story gives a middle finger to all the fans of School Rumble.

I can't say I enjoyed this OVA to the extent of the first season and Ni Gakki. The elements of what made this show great (the comedy and the shipping lanes) were severely lacking. Though it can be attributed to the fact that we were only given 2 out of 26 episodes...it still wouldn't change the horrible ending of SR. I'm not a big fan of anime original endings, but why oh why didn't they give us one...

Thus ends the story of School Rumble...off to the next future train wreck known as School Rumble Z!

I’m a huge fan of school rumble. I wanted to like this “third season” and more than anything I wanted to see how things turned out, but this is not what we wanted, this not school rumble. Do yourself a favor and pretend it ended with season 2. Even season 2’s non ending was better than this crap. I have never before seen an author stupid enough to marginalize the most interesting character (whom happens to be the main character) in favor of switching the focus to the least interesting character.

While i haven't read the manga, some basic checking of the last chapter of ... it shows the ending is more or less the same as the anime, something that viewers of both seem to support. This is important to note because the manga ending is one of the most universally reviled endings there is for any manga i've seen.

Story: 6

This ova tries to take a ton of the manga and quickly bringer the viewer up to date with what happened before it gets to the aforementioned shit ending. The result is the viewer be bombarded with tons of quick scenes at the start. In order to support the shit ending, a lot of changes were made to the story that annoys me as a fan of the series. It Is almost like the author got tired of the series so started inventing tons of random crap to lead to an ending that wasn’t support at all before this. The ending was also horrible, beyond bad, being one of the worst endings ever in the history of anime. Nothing foreshadowed it and in order to pull it off, the author had to radically alter personalities, invent crazy events and generally make a mockery of the entire series by ignoring everything that had happened previously.

Art is the same as the rest of the series. If you liked it before, you will like it now. I liked it before, thus I like it now.

Sound: 7

Same as art. Sound is same as rest of the series. Music was so-so with nothing really standing out to me.

Character: 4

What the hell! As I said in overall, the author makes a clear push to change the main character of the series from Harimma to Karasuma. In order to do this, Karasuma suddenly has his personality radically altered and is defined a lot more than he was in the entire two seasons before this. It is too bad that I already decided he annoys the hell out of me after two seasons of him being an emotionless robot that treats Tenma like crap (curry > her comment being the big and direct example). Harima’s character also changes for the worse too.

I wish I had just pretended it ended with season two. Since I liked school rumble quite a bit, the pain of how bad season 3 was hurts even more. Karasuma was a purposefully annoying character throughout the entire series so seeing him made in to a main character that I was supposed to feel sorry for pissed me off too.

If you plan on watching this ,and all you've watched is the show, well then allow me to give you a bit of a heads up. Since it's only two episodes long this semester glosses over about 3 things that happen in the manga. So read the manga then watch this or you can just watch this and forget about everything they glossed over.

These two episodes come out of the blue. It starts off with flashbacks of scenes that haven't even been aired, and develops around an event that us, the viewers, cannot fully understand by watching these two episodes.

It has similar artwork to the first two seasons, but the change in producers is noticeable. Brings back the nice songs from the first two terms, and remains loyal to each character's personality.

They're supposed to be the last two episodes of the third season of School Rumble; hopefully, the 24 previous episodes to these two will be aired as well.

Overall, it's enjoyable and funny, although it doesn't even comes ... close to be as good as School Rumble 1st Term and 2nd Term.

School Rumble San Gakki really disappointed me because I expected a romantic type ending. The rapid character change also disappointed me. We see Harima as the main protagonist in School Rumble 2nd Semester, and then all of a sudden Karasuma becomes the main character. Rapid character shifting, and personality shifting also ticked me off. Karasuma was pretty annoying in my opinion throughout the School Rumble season because he basically showed little to no emotion at all.

I give it a 6 because the story was crammed into 2 episodes, and in my opinion it didn't really let the viewers see more of Karasuma and Tenma's ... stay at America. I do like that I was able to see a different side of Eri. Other than that the story lacked romance and that to me was its downfall.

If you liked the Art for School Rumble you'll like this one as well.

Sound:
I'm not a fan of Re-using soundtracks, but personally School Rumble's season 1 soundtrack was an ideal choice for these two Ova's.

The writers did a poor job with the character development because in the end nothing was closed. I am still waiting for the real ending of School Rumble which is Harima and Tenma expressing their feelings. Eri on the other hand didn't disappoint me at all. She might have been arrogant, immature, and conceited at times, but deep down I know she was having a hard time expressing her feelings to anyone in general. Eri finally opened up and expressed her feelings by the help of Harima.

I personally only enjoyed the Eri and Harima scene because it showed me a different view of Eri. Other than that this OVA was a let down.

I was let down by the sudden shift in main characters, and the mediocre ending. As a viewer of School Rumble I really wanted to see Harima express his feelings to Eri, Yakumo, or Tenma. What did bring the rating up was Eri once again because I wanted to see a different view of Eri. The view of Eri I had before which was conceited,arrogant, and selfish now changed to a caring type girl who wants to be loved for who she is, not because of her rich financial status.

Wow... just wow...

I cannot begin to express how disappointed I was...

School Rumble managed to remain an awesome series throughout 52 episodes and the OVA season, but this "San Gakki"...

I think it hit the hardest because "Season Three" was supposed to be a full season... until they cut it to an "OVA".. and I really think that viewers should end it at season 2. Season three would've been just as great as its predecessors if it well... hadn't been cut short, only showing the last two "episodes", which seemed pretty much out of the blue. All the while fans were waiting to see how Harima/ Tenma/ ... Karasma/ Sawachika ended out: the two seasons dragged it out, building up for the climax... then BOOM! It just ends bluntly and abruptly due to lack of episodes... Honestly, I was furious when I watched this... the character/ story is good, but the missing parts leave a gaping hole...

"San Gakki.." what a sore disappointment to School Rumble fans.... This season would have so much more potential with the lacking 24 episodes... hence, the "5"

How can you possibly cram a whole season (26 episodes)into just two episodes and then still dare to call it a seaon in it's own right!?!?!

I'm gonna tell you right off the bat I am extremely disappointed and surprised with how this turned out…seriously it makes NO bloddy sense what-so-ever…and this has now ruined this franchise for me in its entirety....URG

Animation

Just like the previous seasons before the animation is very good, designers make use of many effects for some ... classic facial expressions etc. I like all the character designs its all quite standard for 2005+ animes it always seemed to work well for the series. I mostly liked the many faces of Harima. Op & End Credits are slightly “modified” from the first season which I found weird/lazy as season 2 had a different opening/closing.

Sound

Again Just like the previous seasons before the sound is very good. Character voices are quite perfect – the Jap version anyway. I especially like the ending song which as stated before is just a carbon copy of the first season. Not much more to say about this.

Story

***MINI SPOILERS***

So the first 3 or so minutes gives you an ultra fast sum up of what has happened in the school rumble universe's 3rd semester up to the last days where the first episode (25) starts off!?!?!....wtf.....what now???

What follows next is basically some lame closure-type drama where you kind of find out where things stand with the whole Harima Crush thing but it just seems like a rushed effort to close the school rumble story, honestly its not like I’m saying “that would not happen” but considering it took YEARS for this to come out without another 23 episodes to run things up to it…..its just a really big sucker punch that followers of the anime alone will not enjoy

IF these two episodes where originally added as the finale of season two it would have made a little more sense but then I would have just said the ending was lame. Bottom line they wanted to round up the story very quickly….why.....who knows.

Characters

School rumble had an excellent cast of characters and I really think a few of them could have stood as a anime series alone even Harima alone was just TOO FUNNY. UNFORTUNATELY the series kinda drifted around too much (especially in SR2) to know if some characters’ would get more screen time than others and considering how it ended up I think this series wasted A LOT of great potential.

Did I enjoy this 2 part rush job of a “season F&*% no!....why... because it was just a little taste of a great and eventually disappointing series.

Value

If you watched season 1 & 2 you more or less have to watch this but it’s almost guaranteed you will feel short-changed and disappointed. The only way this is worth value is if they just rename it the season 2 finale…..but come to think of it, it would have been better if they just left things at season 2 with the HOPE of a proper season 3 but instead you get a giant middle finger. Thank You Assholes!

Actually, I enojoyed this ending more than I first expected. The series took a very unexpected and interesting turn and was more dramatic than ever before. THAT is amazing in my opinion. A comedy like this must have drama to balance it out and makes you care more for the characters involved (most of them anyway).

It may have seemed rushed to some people but I did not feel that at all. The series have always been fast-paced with new events and short stories getting piled up on one another with an explanation that ties everything together (in the most weird of ways at ... times).

Even though this ending did not fail me in that aspect, the story did not turn out how I wanted it to be. But still, it did not end with the ending I did NOT like either. So that balanced the scale out and it became enjoyable to say the least.

Something that I enjoy the most is character development, which two characters goes through in these episodes, Sawachika and Karasuma. Both of them do something that is unexpected for their character traits and they turn a little more likeable. Still, it would not have been all that bad if more characters did that. But in just two episodes, this is acceptable and most characters have already gone through something similiar in the previous seasons.

I will not say much about the art and music than that it holds the standard of previous episodes and works very well with the scenes mood and atmosphere. The same goes for sound effects and ambient sound.

I enjoyed the ending very much and feel relieved to have finally reached the finishline and to have my very own opinion on the series. I accept the ending given, but I would have wished for a longer third season with a stronger conclusion of what happened to everyone afterwards.
Still, this ending should not be skipped under any circumstances if you have watched the earlier seasons as it answers (at least some) of the questions one might have at the end of the second two.

Ugh, what can I say? Other than that they literally threw a pie in our faces while giving, us, the fans, the finger.

It's really hard to write a complete review without giving anything away, but you aren't really told anything. Other than that some people thought that their love for someone was unrequited and the receiver of their love had no idea; but they actually did. Hm.

Basically I would recommend you read or go on discussion sites about the follow-up to this, the manga, School Rumble Z. The final chapter does, just ... barely, clear some things up.

I just rewatched School Rumble along with this 3rd season OVA, and was reading some reviews, and apparently a lot of people hated the ending. This reviewer interested me:

While I agree with him that Karasuma's illness and going to America was sort of cliche', it still gets the job done. It more or less answers all issues with Karasuma regarding transferring schools, why he's antisocial, and why he avoids Tenma and love.

I think it the reason it feels out of place is it comes out of the blue, and it developed within a mere two episodes. If season three had actually spent many episodes prior foreshadowing this ending, it would have been fine. I don't think its a problem with the script itself, I think its just the fact that us viewers never learned about the character development that 24 episodes could have covered.

As for 'radically altered personalities', I don't really think so. I think the actions Harima Kenji took in the ending feels like exactly what he would do, and I can say the same for Tsukamoto Tenma and Sawachika Eri. The only really out of place character is Karasuma, who unloads his fury unto Harima in a fight (which I thought was awesome). The quoted reviewer might be complaining about Karasuma's drastic character change. However, I don't think its really a change, considering that this is a whole semester after the last we saw of these characters, and a lot happened in that time, especially regarding Karasuma.

It really is a shame, though, that they didn't make a third season. It could have easily have been just as comedic and romantic. Despite the two extra episodes feeling out of place, I'm still glad they exist. Taking into account the chunk of story we missed, I think the ending was really good, its just hard to appreciate.

If you think School Rumble is over you’re wrong. After two seasons of laughter and craziness this “love story” reaches it’s the awaited conclusion. This is a 30 minutes – 2 episode OVA that is very different compared to all the previous anime content. These OVAs contain only the necessary amount of comedy to be a School Rumble sequel. This is just an attempt to try to finish the anime in a similar way the manga did. Originally these two OVAs are the two last episodes of never released 3rd season.

The story starts as a recap, a very fast recap that compresses all the stuff ... that supposedly happened at this incomplete 3rd season. Actually this is quite sad because a lot of things happened on the third term, so the recap is not enough to reflect all this and when its over and the OVAs starts up with the actual content one feels lost and confused; after a bit you get used to it but still feels weird (yeah more weird than the actual series plotline.) As I said before the comedy amount gets extremely reduced and makes one wonder if this is really School Rumble. This concludes all: Tenma’s confession, Karasuma’s feelings and Harima’s situation. Although you’ll be disappointed by the fast pace these events take place.

The animation is not very different from the previous seasons. It gets a bit of an improvement but nothing to be impressed about. If you haven't watched School Rumble the design is crazy and sudden (best words to describe it): you get these beautiful characters that can transform into anything and be in any kind of random situation; it's a shame you don't get too much of this in the OVAs.

The opening song is the same as the first season. Personally I think that the 2nd season opening is the best between the two of them but both are good tracks that keep you glued to the anime from the beginning. The BMG’s inside the anime are just fun to listen to (again same as first and second season), nothing special.

The characters never cease to amaze me. They change personality quickly and do a perfect comedy scheme. Of course there are LOTS of characters in the whole anime, all of them are very interesting and it’s really a shame that these don’t have enough airtime to develop completely. In the OVAs you just see the main characters development (Tenma, Karasuma and Harima) so the other characters are just putted aside. Overall the anime leaves all this “secondary” and “supporting” roles outside the main plot but all the School Rumble characters are so good that you’ll be willing to watch an arc based on each one.

In the end School Rumble can’t go wrong. The first two seasons were oviously better than these OVAs. The fast pace leave one wanting more School Rumble and the recap in the first OVA is really lame and incoherent. But is just a fast way to end a great comedy/love anime that probbably would have gone on and on for two or three more seasons.

My advice is: if you liked the first two seasons and want more, watch this; if you think you’d had enough don’t watch these OVAs, it’s not mandatory. These OVAs will feel like the awaited clousure you’ve been waiting but in the end they're too short to have a "balance", a contrast, with the previous 26+26 episodes. Either way you’ll want more so enjoyment is not assured for everyone.

This ending was obviously rushed but i doubt it would have been much better if it wasn't. The first two seasons had me rooting for Harima and hating Karasuma so the fact that Honda ended up with Karasuma and Harima ended up with nothing this season rubbed me the wrong way. Even if they had 20 more episodes to come to that conclusion I think that actually might have been even worse. One of the worst anime endings to one of the best animes.

I started out watching the School Rumble anime (English sub, I unfortunately don’t understand the Japanese language) and really just expected it to be what it appeared to be – a funny comedy anime. I was partially right about that, but also VERY wrong. School Rumble, on the surface, doesn’t seem very serious. But so many things underneath the surface of it are very serious and insightful and even deeply moving. Soon after starting the anime I was hooked, and almost immediately related to Harima Kenji and began cheering him on to accomplish his goal. Throughout the beginning and middle of the series we see ... Harima failing over and over at his attempts to confess his feelings to Tenma. At first it’s laughable how silly and avoidable the misunderstandings are. Then as the series continues and you begin to see the toll it takes on Harima and the amount of pain it starts to cause him it begins to get less and less bearable to watch. Of course with all the other great characters and stories in School Rumble you are still thoroughly hooked on the series, and besides, you feel that you have to see the series through to the end to see if Harima wins the heart of the girl he loves. You also feel you have to see what happens with Hanai, Eri, Yakumo, Ichijou, Mikoto, and all the other very well written and interesting characters. The ending of the first season makes you think Harima finally confesses his love to Tenma, but it ends up being imaginary. At this point I was physically fatigued and drained from the roller coaster of emotions and disappointments throughout the first season. But at the same time I couldn’t wait to watch the second season. The second season was great of course, although in the Harima and Tenma storyline it just got more and more painful to watch. More misunderstandings, more missed opportunities, more outside interference and assumptions of who Harima did or didn’t like from his classmates. More oblivousness from Tenma as she chases after the completely blank Karasuma. The second season wraps up with no resolution. So, disappointed and borderline depressed I watch the 3rd season, which is actually just two OVAs.

Result: Complete and utter heart wrenching emptiness. Harima has been emotionally tortured and left to die basically. Tenma is gone to America to be with Karasuma and become a nurse to take care of him because he is in the hospital there with a condition that has wiped out his memory. He doesn’t even know who she is but she still wants to be with him. Harima does not get the girl. In fact no one gets anyone. Almost every story line is left unfinished.

I was fully depressed and left with an empty feeling inside. That’s the best way I can describe it. I had to have answers. I found the manga and began reading immediately.

After reading through the ENTIRE manga and then the follow up manga “School Rumble Z” I had to face harsh reality…….there was NO conclusion. No happy couples, no loose ends tied up, no happily ever after or riding off into the sunset. Just more emptiness and depression. It was as if the characters had been killed in the prime of their lives and their futures were cut short. There is no way you can understand the way it feels unless you’ve been on this journey that is School Rumble. It’s incomparable.

I couldn’t believe it. I searched all over the internet for any and all information about School Rumble and it’s creator Jin Kobayashi. I began reaching out to fans and hearing their stories that were the same as mine. The way they felt at the end of it all was like my story. The wave of emotions: shock and disbelief, confusion, emptiness, depression, and bitterness.

There is much much more to this story. But that’s basically how I got started on this mission to reach Mr. Kobayashi. There have been moments of slight progress, and a few disappointments. Ups and downs, feeling like I’m all alone in this, and then feeling the love and support of School Rumble fans from many different countries around the world. One thing is certain, I have no plans of EVER giving up.

In closing, here’s the motto: Justice for Harima, closure for the fans, may the hero get his girl, may his spring finally come.

Coming from someone who went to read the manga after watching the entirety of the first two seasons, SchoolRum San Gakki felt incredibly rushed, in comparison with the manga which clearly had enough content for another full 24 episodes.

Instead it adapted some of the more important scenes (all of them were well done, though it felt incredibly disjointed at times, non manga readers may not see it though), due to perhaps popularity or budget, which we will never know heh. Perhaps of note is how the MC Harima developed over the very short adaptation - it was done very well and conveyed just how ... good the character development was in the manga.

Though overall, a rather lacklustre end to a great show that gave me 2 seasons worth of laughter, due to perhaps unexpected circumstances if anything. Do read the manga if you want to know how much you've missed! :)

This hurts. I really liked this show. I watched season one and two so i just wanted to finish the series. Now i wish that they never made anything at all.

The art was a big bruh. I like it and hate it. It was nice to see a new style but when they did any sort of close up on the face it was insanely goofy. The character design was so bad. They could have put any outfit on them but they basically only wore there uniforms. They sometimes wore something else but it was so bad in the last episode. They made excuses ... for it but it would have been so nice to see them in casual clothes and grown up (especially Harima). At least they brought back the beard.

The last episode was so, so bad. The pacing made me want to die. It would not have killed them to make a third episode. They really said "Harima is a manga artist but what if he went missing for several years and traveled across the world, but make sure he doesn't change at all during the last scene." Like bruh how do you an ending that boring and uninspired.

The first episode wasn't so bad. It is really carried by the action. I was so happy to see him getting the ass beat out of him. The pacing was also goofy. Tenma couldn't say anything the entire 52 episodes before but within about ten minutes she can confess. It was an OVA they could have made it 3 or 4 episodes.

Season 1 and 2 are so much fun. I watched the entire series in about a week and the conclusion just bruh. It is hard to believe someone could drop the ball this hard. It feels fake or like it was fan made, not something that would actually conclude the story!

This is a story about a man, a man that has sacrificed everything for the person that he loves, unfortunately, that person loves someone else’s, and even knowing this, the man does what he needs to do, this is a story about a real man, this is the story about Harima Kenji.

Well, don't get me wrong, school rumble is probably one of my top anime of all time, I love that anime, at least, the first two seasons of it, I first watched back in 2017, and this year I've re-watched it, and it was when I find this two ova, that I didn't even ... know that existed. And finally, one hour ago, I watched, and what can I say? , is it good as the original series? NO, so is it really bad? no, it's just average, but man, oh man, say it hurts me, and think that one day I would say that something related do school rumble is just average is a knife in the heart.

But now let's talk about it. And there will little spoilers about it.
The first episode starts with a montage of the time skip, it had more than 80 chapters that were skipped, which basically if you don't read the manga you won't get the main plot and the conversation between the characters will make almost no sense, this is a ridiculous thing to do in a sequel, and after this, we are in a marathon, later the main plot is Tenma going after Karasuma, and that's it. Oh and again you'll just have a little idea of what's going on with all the characters on the series, but this is the good side of the problems, cause man, the end is just so frustrating and no sense that can make you quest if it was worth to watch it, and my opinion? it wasn't.

oh and Justice 4 Harima.

This so-called 3rd season is nothing but an OVA series which is disappointing to me and alot of SR fans. San Gakki is consisting of 2 episodes: 25 and 26 the last 2, and the other 24 was never animated and right now i highly doubt it will EVER will be animated.

Anyways back on topic, a chunk of episode 25 is review/flashbacks from the previous 24 episodes *that never animated and i want to watch* and i believe Karasuma *if i spell the guys name right* leaves and go to america.

Anyways ill stop spoiling it to people that haven't watch it yet any further, ... Its still a solid short-short season 3, still have its funny scenes and all, but its not as i expected.

Still it gets a 9 out of 10 since episode 25 spoiled us with flashbacks from the previous 24 episodes.

Very good ending.
However, it doesnt really match the mood of the previous series.
This last season isn't really as focused on humor but kinda like a intense complicated romance anime

Ever Since I finished watching "Ni GAkki", I've been looking forward for the release of "san gakki" and never thought it would be an OVA. I was expecting it to be a TV series and more exciting episodes. The OVA's are cool and really nice story,But it has only 2 OVA"s. A really short story For "San Gakki". Quiet disappointment for that.

The reason i gave 9 for the story, It's because when you watch it, you feel like something is missing and you really feel like watching what was happened Between the end of "Ni Gakki" and the start of "San Gakki". And I'm Craving ... for it...

I Would Suggest to read the manga first before watching it. That is only If you want to follow the story line.

It would Be really Cool if they make an Anime for that. Hoping for It.....

I understand that trying to cram an entire season's worth of material into two episodes is really difficult. The ending, however, was very disappointing. While there is a lot of build up and what looks to be an enjoyable climax, it falls completely short of it by instead providing no real resolution. There is no progression and rather than completing the full character arcs, they just end the series right back at the beginning, again as if nothing ever happened. The entire series has been hinting at things the entire show and then in these two episodes while they seemed to be going based off ... of some of those hints, they don't do anything with it. There are also some moments that seem somewhat out of character, as well. Also, the art doesn't seem very consistent and there are some shots of characters that look quite different from the original series but then occasionally revert back to the original style which felt out of place.

Overall, it was a disappointment. Again, it was definitely would have been difficult to get a very satisfying ending to the series in only two episodes, but it just felt like there were several moments throughout the episode where you felt like, "oh, here it is! This is how it's going to end!" and then the opportunity is never used and they leave it back at square one.
