They should really drop the romance tag on this. (EDIT - Not anymore, thanks XEELTom for giving me the heads up! :) )

Quick summary - in a world where people have flying shoes there exists a sport that's called Flying Circus. Basically you touch four poles as fast as you can or you whack the opponent's back or well, you prevent the opponent from doing so. Not really much of a premise there LOL.

Basic summary of the show - set in the Muv Luv Alternative universe where aliens known as BETA start invading Earth and eating people, and stuff. It's 1983 and our heroes are part of a divided Germany and the BETA is pretty much at their doorstep.

Luckily there isn't any real need to dive into the Muv Luv universe as a whole (it's great though), since the anime is pretty much a very good standalone gateway into the franchise itself.

FripSide OP. I'm a big sucker for fripSide's music so this is a big plus for me haha. ED complements the show very well.

Coming from someone who went to read the manga after watching the entirety of the first two seasons, SchoolRum San Gakki felt incredibly rushed, in comparison with the manga which clearly had enough content for another full 24 episodes.

Instead it adapted some of the more important scenes (all of them were well done, though it felt incredibly disjointed at times, non manga readers may not see it though), due to perhaps popularity or budget, which we will never know heh.
