One night, Mikado Ryuugamine accepts an invitation to Shinra Kishitani's apartment, eager to talk to Celty as quite some time has passed since the two last spoke. But, much to his astonishment, he finds that a large group of Ikebukuro's finest has gathered there for a hot pot party.
Already confused with the current situation, Mikado is further surprised to see that his friend and fellow Raira Academy student Anri Sonohara is there as well. As the two decide to take a seat together, a few members of the group begin reminiscing over events from days past: Mikado recalls an adventure from his childhood with Masaomi Kida, Anri explains how she came to be friends with Mika Harima, and Shizuo Heiwajima tells of his first meeting with Tom Tanaka.
I'll try not to be biased, since Durarara!! is my favorite series of all time, but okay here I go. Also this is my first review so I thought it would be good to start with something small. There are no spoilers ahead so feel free to read this if you haven't watched it.
I liked this OVA a lot, as you could see how the different relationships of people developed, and the backgrounds that provided the root for their friendships. Mikado and Masaomi, Anri and Mika, and Shizuo and Tom. (You hear about Izaya's relationships in the Ten arc.)
The only reason I gave it
a 9, is because we didn't get to hear about the Van Gang's relationship. (Walker and Erika were just joking around and made something up but it was still quite enjoyable.)
This OVA has the same animation style as Durarara!!x2, since it is set during (or maybe after) episode 4 of Shou. I liked the animation style a lot, as compared to other people who preferred the 2010 animation.
Durarara!!'s soundtrack has always been very good. You have calm songs, then some violent songs for violent scenes (aka Shizuo's theme, can't remember the name of it at the moment), and this OVA simply reuses the soundtracks from Season 1.
I could talk about the characters but I'm assuming that everyone who's reading this has at least watched the first season. So I'm not really gonna go into that.
Once again, hearing about everyone's relationship backgrounds was enjoyable, and it's nice to see how some people have changed, or even not changed at all.
Great OVA, I recommend watching it so you can better understand the nature of some characters.
Durarara!!x2 Shou: Watashi no Kokoro wa Nabe Moyou is a wonderful addition to a great series.
To be perfectly honest this special is not needed. You can watch the main series and not miss anything major-HOWEVER just because it is not needed to progress the story does not necessarily mean its not enjoyable. In fact I'd have to say I really enjoyed this special.
What stands out first and foremost in Durarara is the characters-and this special perfectly highlights the characters that make Durarara so great.
You spend the majority of the episode learning more about the backstory of several of the characters as they sit
around a hotpot.
If you are a fan I say this special is a must watch.
Great special that goes more into Mika’s past and really gives you more time to just sit down with the characters and discover more about them, their relationships, etc. This is one of my favorite specials as it really strengths Izaya’s character, showing a kinder side of them that’s just lonely and wants compassion. I see a lot of people yelling at Izaya fans saying there really is no reason to like him and they only enjoy his character for his looks. Yes I’ll admit there are a lot of those types of fans, but, some like me like him because he’s generally an interesting
character. Also a lot of people claim people saying Izaya has a good side are just crazy fan girls with ridiculous hopes and wishes. However, some of us just know his type of character better or have payed attention to the clues the show throws at us. Because of this, I like that the writers sat down and really went deeper into his character since this seemed like an issue for some viewers (especially people I mentioned before. This special shows he does have a good side in an obvious way all viewers are bound to notice.) He eats hot pot all by himself while the other characters all gather together for a hot pot party, leaving him out on the fun. We see some interesting interactions between him and Namie, him being rather nice and showing he is thankful for everything she does for him, though she does not return the compassion and would rather have nothing to do with him. Great special I advise you to watch if you want to know more about the characters, and just have a time to see them not in a time of panic for once.
