Synopsis

Hellsing, an organization specializing in dealing with supernatural threats, is called in to eliminate a vampire that is turning the villagers of Cheddar into ghouls. To put an end to this, the leader of the organization, Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, dispatches her most formidable asset: a powerful vampire known as Alucard.

Armed with only a single handgun, Alucard wreaks havoc on the monsters plaguing Cheddar. However, a young police officer, Seras Victoria, gets caught up in the chaos and becomes mortally wounded as a result. Taking pity on the girl, Alucard gives her a choice: die as a human or live on as a vampire. Seras accepts his offer and begins a new life as a member of Hellsing.

Though it was her decision, Seras struggles with the fact that she is no longer human. Nevertheless, she must embrace being a creature of the night soon if she wants to survive on the front lines in the fight between humans and the supernatural.

Background

Hellsing was based on Kouta Hirano’s manga of the same name. The anime utilizes the same characters but the story strongly deviates from the manga, which was still ongoing at the time of the anime’s creation.

Hellsing provides evidence to the validity of emphasizing art, soundtrack, characterization, and visual storytelling over an approach centered around hard worldbuilding, and more direct exposition. Both methods are valid and can be executed well, but Hellsing takes a more challenging approach to it's interpretation of an unfinished manga. With so much time spent fleshing out characters, exploring the unique style of the work, and introducing one of the most consistently impressive anime soundtracks out there, there's many gaps in the storytelling like lore that needs further exploration, missing pages of origin stories, and central characters that become irrelevant shockingly fast. This is unfortunately (most likely) ...

Mixed Feelings
Haven't watched Ultimite, but screw it. Here's my review anyway.

I don't know if I feel this show too much. It has a really distinct style, and some of the main casts are fine, but it still manages to produce some forgettable episodes. It kinda gets messy in the last three episodes. Also, I find Seras' character a bit weird, since I'm pretty sure she has most of the screen time on this show, yet her developement throughout is pretty much treated like an insignificant side character. Idk, it's a bit weird. It's a shame because I found her conflicts with being a vampire initially interesting.

I ...

I'm a big Hellsing fan. Its manga was among the first mangas I ever read, and to this day remains very cool in my eyes. However, both anime versions of it are beyond disappointing imo, BEYOND DISAPPOINTING. I would even call them OBJECTIVELY very bad, and question the taste of any person that even thinks they are okay, no matter how popular they are. This older one of them in particular truly got almost zero redeeming qualities. To keep it short, please do not waste your time watching this.

The story is really generic and the characters are mostly flat and boring. In the manga that ...
