Diabolik Lovers

At the behest of her father, Yui Komori goes to live in a secluded mansion, home to the six Sakamaki brothers—Shuu, Reiji, Ayato, Kanato, Laito, and Subaru—a family of vampires. Though at first the siblings are confused as to why the girl has arrived, they soon realize that she is to be their new "sacrificial bride," not to mention their other, more carnal intentions for her. After meeting the brothers, Yui quickly begins to question why her father would have sent her here and why she feels a strange, new pain in her chest. With each brother more sadistic than the last, Yui's life as a captive takes a harrowing turn in her new home. As her days turn into endless nights, and each brother vows to make her his own, Yui falls deeper and deeper into madness and ecstasy.

This is the best worst adaptation of anything I've ever watched.

I never played the original games but for some unknown reason that even I can't explain nor remember, I decided to watch both seasons TWICE, although the second time I watched it with a friend and I gotta say, I had a blast.

The story, the direction and the characters are terrible. If I think of it, the only thing I probably liked was the voice acting bcs I know most of the voice actors from previous animes. However, the fact that I watched it with someone who has the same sense of humor as me ... and that's sarcastic 24/7 made this experience very enjoyable. We laughed every episode from beginning to end and joked about everything that happened while trying to predict what stupid move the mc would do next.

I guess you get it by now, but you, the person reading this, are not suppose to take this review seriouslly. It's more like a bad joke that I find funny. Also, I like to entertain the tought that some people (maybe a lot) will be mad because of my rating, even though it doesn't really matter.

Mixed Feelings

It's what you expect from a otome anime adaption, it just doesn't really work because of the many routes... Also I know a lot of people had a issue with the plot because everything about it is morally fucked but personally I kinda like the idea, its just I had a big issue with the main character... We had little insight about how she was feeling, every scenario doesn't feel like it's ACTUALLY from the perspective of the MC as the scenes don't portray just how scary and traumatizing it is (Kinda makes it hard to relate and understand the MC), each past event also ... feels like it didn't really happen because in the next scene/episode they just act like nothing happened, and last complaint is it could've been better if we had a stronger, dominant MC to be that voice of reason and to put the male leads in place... I just feel like if they focused less on the romance, more on the emotions this would've worked out much better for the anime, thats all i gotta say! bye!

This is, without a doubt, the worst anime I have ever seen. It's so bad that it makes me reconsider the handful of 1's I've given. If 0 were an option, I'd give it this. As a few other reviews said, it really makes you rethink what one considers "bad anime". It hits all the check marks of a bad show for me. Trivialized romance? Check. Boring? Check. No characters to like? Check. Lack of plot? Check. Psychological abuse? Check. There's probably more, but damn you could give a 5 year old a color crayon and some blank pieces of paper and he could come ... up with something better.

I try to come up with somethings I haven't seen mentioned by others to make the review worth reading, but the main points have been already written by others.

Technically, this show is very sloppy. I haven't played the game, so the blame will have to fall at the feet of the show writers here. First, there is no romantic stakes whatsoever. When making a harem, the enjoyment comes from the "Who will they pick?" and the general drama. Sometimes this is taken to such an extreme that drinking from the same water bottle accidentally is made to be a big deal. You think early on it might be whoever bites her, but that is quickly disposed of. The whole concept of "claiming" also falls flat when Ayato or w/e doesn't even enforce it. In fact, the general lack of norms and rules is completely alien to this show. Screw even the romance, there's nothing titillating about the show whatsoever. There's no meaning at all to anything. It completely fails as a harem.

The next issue with stakes is that there seems to be no consequences. So as others have pointed out, the heroine seems to suffer consequences of blood loss initially but they remove that in later episodes. However the complete removal of vampire weaknesses also is a fatal error as it ruins control of the story and proper pacing. Them all being assholes could work in theory, but they'd have to retain typical vampire weaknesses. They make constant mention of silver weapons, but the problem the show has isn't that they couldn't in theory be fought but that they cannot be warded off. With them teleporting everywhere and forcing themselves upon her, it doesn't give a story the proper time to play out and removes any agency she has. The heroine may as well be tied up in a dungeon.

Additionally the mockery the show likes to make about religion ruins what is perhaps the most interesting aspect of vampire repellant, and doesn't make sense in later episodes where Hell is treated as a real place in their figures of speech (at least in the English sub).

Another issue with this show is said story. None of the major story beats are dealt with, why is she there? Why does she remain there? None of this is delved too deeply into. There may be some attempt at Stockholm Syndrome, but I think that's a cop out since there's not really any good to go with the bad. It's just consistently bad things happening. Instead, much like the character interactions, the story becomes focused on the brothers and even that is half-finished. I think they're going for the brothers being pressured into doing things by their mothers, and that's why you're supposed to feel bad for them? There's a "big bad" at the end, but I'm not going to touch on it because this belongs in the spoiler free section to ward away any potential viewers.

The forced attempt at powerlessness is a double edge sword that is a cause of major outrage in this. I get that is sort of part of the gimmick, but it comes across as extremely tragic given that the heroine tries to do everything right and gets punished (sometimes heavily) either physically, emotionally or psychologically by the brothers. Viewers will vent their frustration at the main character for not running or killing when she has the opportunities, because I think any decent person who sees something helpless get tortured would like to see it either escape or get revenge on their captors. Words like victim, sadism, etc get thrown around pretty generously, but if anything this show has done right (and actually wrong given its supposed to be sexually gratifying for some viewers), is that it is the definition of it.

Finally, I want to touch on the fanbase. If you actually like this show, there's something wrong with you. It's no excuse to say you like the characters because of the appearance and a one or two personality traits a character or a few characters have. I'm not a woman, but if I gender swapped this show it would still be really bad. You shouldn't let something as shallow as appearances get in the way of the overall story or personality of the characters. You can like villainous characters, even dangerous ones, but it should be grounded to the point of them actually having something deeper about them worth liking. You can disregard the story with a focus primarily on the characters. This show has no one worth simping for, and there are way better characters in other shows worth a shallow rating. Show you have at least some sort of standards.

All in all, this is a bad show, mercifully only having 15 minute episodes. I give it a 0/10 and the most disturbing thing about it is that there are people who actually like it.
