Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai

When Kodaka Hasegawa finds out that he will be transferring to a new school, he is determined to make a positive impression, and maybe even some friends. However, Kodaka discovers he is out of luck when he immediately gets labeled as a violent delinquent due to his blond hair and intimidating expression. Although a month has passed, Kodaka is still alone thanks to his notorious reputation. However, his life begins to change when he finds fellow loner Yozora Mikazuki talking to her imaginary friend in an empty classroom.

After sharing stories of their lonely high school life, Kodaka and Yozora decide to overcome the difficulties of making friends together by starting the Neighbor's Club. Created for people who don't have friends, daily activities involve learning social skills and how to fit in, which will hopefully allow them to make friends. Joined by the eroge-loving Sena Kashiwazaki, and other eccentric outcasts, Kodaka may finally have managed to find people he can call friends, in this club filled with hilarious oddballs.

The premise isn't super innovative for an anime of this style, but it serves its purpose. We'll see the daily life of our protagonist Kodaka and how he strives, along with other characters, to make friends in his adolescence because he's not very good at it.

The anime contains several ecchi scenes, comedy, and of course, harem elements. There are several "loli" characters, so if you're not comfortable with this type of content, consider yourself warned.

The animation is quite good and fluid; to enjoy this anime in the best way, I recommend its Blu-ray version, which is completely uncensored and has improvements in animation quality.

It's an ... anime I highly recommend, especially if you're a fan of ecchi anime; it has a lot of hilarious and funny situations. 👍

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai: A Brilliant Comedy That Forgets the Ending
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (also known as Haganai) is an anime that takes a simple premise—loneliness—and turns it into a hilarious and often touching comedy. The story follows Kodaka Hasegawa, a transfer student with an intimidating appearance that prevents him from making friends. By chance, he runs into the lonely Yozora Mikazuki and, realizing they share the same problem, they decide to form the "Neighbors Club," a group with the noble goal of learning how to socialize. Soon, they are joined by other misfits, each one more eccentric than the last.

The greatest strength ... of the series is the dynamic between the characters and its comedy. The chemistry between this group of outcasts is the soul of the show. The humor comes from their clumsy and failed attempts at socializing, and the dialogues are witty and full of sarcasm. Beneath the comedy, the anime explores the loneliness and difficulty of connecting with others in a surprisingly honest way, which gives it a heart that is often lost in other comedies.

However, its biggest weakness is fatal: the absence of narrative progression. The series spends two full seasons building emotional tension and romance between the characters, exploring their pasts and their feelings, but it never reaches a satisfying resolution. The anime ends abruptly, leaving all the main arcs in a frustrating limbo that doesn't honor the viewer's emotional investment.

Verdict and Rating
Haganai is a fun comedy with a brilliant script, but it feels like a journey without a destination. It makes you laugh and gets you invested in its characters and their drama, but in the end, it doesn't offer the closure the story desperately needs. Its talent for comedy and character writing is undeniable, but its failure in long-term narrative dooms it to be an incomplete work.

Do I recommend it?
Yes, but with a very clear warning. I recommend it if you are looking for a comedy with excellent dialogue and memorable characters, but not if you are looking for a romance with a satisfying ending or a plot that gets resolved. It's a good choice for a light watch, but a bad investment if you get attached to the characters' relationships.

So the English name of this anime is, I guess, Haganai: I Don’t Have Many Friends. And yes, by the end of the anime, you will basically get to know why the main character doesn’t have many friends. So our main protagonist knows he looks like a delinquent because of his hairstyle but cannot alter or cut it because it’s attached to his late mother’s memory. Okay, I got the emotional part, dude, but you could’ve gotten a nice hairstyle by going to a salon. No one is telling you to go bald or dye your hair or change it completely. Just get a good ... hairstyle instead of keeping it like a mess.

And now comes the twist: our main protagonist has a childhood friend, Yozora, but he’s unable to identify her at first glance and only notices her much later in the story. Meanwhile, too much ecchi content also ruins the story. Kodaka’s sister, Kobato, is merely 13 years old. Do the animation team’s brains belong in the gutter for showing her partially nude or naked from behind? Seriously, limit the fan art or keep it out of the way when it comes to little kids.

The only character in the entire series that I find relatable is Rika, who might be a little perverted, but she has a pure heart and does her best to keep the friends’ club running. She’s the one who openly tells our useless male protagonist that she likes him, but despite that, our male protagonist is so dense that he never understands her.

By the end of the anime, instead of facing reality, the male protagonist decides to run away from his problems as if that will solve everything. And what happens? He gets what he deserves. Their club is ruined, the club members are separated, and the female lead—who we can say is Yozora—leaves him.

What kept me going until episode 12? Some lighthearted adult comedy, the two little sisters’ funny moments (Kobato and Maria), and Rika’s adorable blushing and shyness moments. Apart from that, I don’t see anything good about this anime.

I even tried reading the manga, and trust me, it gets worse there too. Dear author, my only question is: why have you designed the main character so badly and the storyline so generically? This anime had a lot of potential, but it went down the gutter.

Probably, I’ll forget this anime soon. 4/10.
