Orange

Naho Takamiya's first day of her sophomore year of high school is off to an uneasy start. After waking up late, she receives a strange letter addressed to her. However, the letter is from herself—10 years in the future! At first, Naho is skeptical of the note; yet, after witnessing several events described to take place, she realizes the letter really is from her 26-year-old self.

The note details that Naho's future life is filled with regrets, and she hopes that her younger self can correct the mistakes that were made in the past. The letter also warns her to keep a close eye on the new transfer student, Kakeru Naruse. Naho must be especially careful in making decisions involving him, as Kakeru is not around in the future. With the letter as her guide, Naho now has the power to protect Kakeru before she comes to regret it once more.

in my opinion what makes an art good
It's either the emotion attachment or the story telling or the epic plot
Orange has mastered the emotion attachment for me of course the emotional attachment is relative it changes from a persona to another unlike the other 2
The emotions that was showed in this anime .. oh god the romance , the sadness , the confusion of choices , the guilt all of these makes the anime in my opinion a masterpiece that I won't experience such as. Truly remarkable anime one of its own
The charcters actions were just perfect to create that atmosphere which ... makes you more attached to the anime , you will feel what they feel , u will experience what they experienced its really reare to get a media like this
That art style was good I mean it's a shojo anime nothing fancy the only thing that made me kinda nervous is the eyes of the main characters they r so far from each other the animator except this I feel that art/animation is good considering its a shojo anime.

Mixed Feelings

I got interested in this anime because its manga is promising for Japanese learners. As of the 22nd of May 2023, its manga has a level 22 in difficulty in LearnNatively.com and this thread recommends it: https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/ij77ln/i_finally_finished_my_first_manga/

The anime covers 5 volumes, and perhaps the movie covers volumes 6 and 7. Considering this, I reckoned that this anime might have a decent enough pacing that other anime lack. Either they add fillers or they cut too much from the source material.

The question then is, is it worth watching the anime? I have mixed feelings.

The animation is mediocre and then deteriorates. I don't exactly mind ... this as the anime focuses on sensitive themes and the drama around it. But if you are too particular about animation quality, this may disappoint you.

The plot goes like this. Our heroine Naho receives a letter from her future self, who is filled with sorrow that the man she loves, Kakeru, killed himself. Using the information provided by her future self — there are several pages with data and time stamps of what she did and how she would like our heroine to do things differently — her task is to make him happy and prevent his suicide.

So far so good. The anime has a sombre mood because of the possibility that Kakeru might actually commit suicide. Also, her love interest is depressed.

However, the execution leaves some things to be desired:

1. The already mentioned mediocre animation.

2. In the middle episodes, it feels such a snoozefest and I don't blame people if they drop at this point. I think it's worth plowing to get to the beautiful ending.

3. This detail bothered me. Even if Naho followed the advice of her future self, Kakeru would still try to kill himself. As to how this was prevented, I won't spoil you. Suffice it to say in retrospect, except for one thing in Episode 1 that she f*cked up, the subsequent events from episodes 2 to 12 would not actually be able to prevent his attempted suicide. It is only necessary to stop him at the exact place where and when the date of his would-be death arrives.

Conclusion:

If not for this aspect that this anime and manga can be helpful for learning Japanese — the Wanikani Beginner's Club has a complete list of vocabulary for the 7 volumes of this manga https://community.wanikani.com/t/orange-book-club-finished/57388 — I would not even recommend this. I did not enjoy watching it.

I am not a big fan of shoujo shows (or manga). Mostly because it is the most formulaic type of all media. But that doesn't mean when one title catches my interest (like this one) I don't give it a try.

I liked the cast of characters. The personality and acting of the main female lead makes her more of a hit or miss (I had no issues with her); but the way she and her friends act together is really heartwarming. Their friendly interactions are likable and it seems they trust each other, since they are willing to talk about their issues to each other ... and trying to find a solution together.

It got a very good start, but a very bad conclusion; to give you an idea without spoilers, imagine it this way – you are cooking a very tasty meal and you are looking forward to eat it (that's the first half of the show), but then, instead of black pepper, you add cinnamon (that's around episode 9-10) and when you start eating, you realize you added cinnamon instead of black pepper, because it tastes terrible, and the whole meal is ruined (last episode).

The non-spoiler flaws I can talk about goes back to its root formula – being a shoujo show. Expect a lot of cliches (e.g. running away from people during serious dialogues, melodrama, acting on emotions, misunderstandings…).

The premise is very easy to get into, but the show won't deliver anything close to satisfying.
Watch only if you are a diehard fan of shoujo genre, yet still, you may find yourself end up being disappointed. I had high hopes for this one, but it all got shattered to pieces. The conclusion is nonsensical and pointless (and even somewhat illogical).

Pros:
+ hooky premise; easy to get into
+ initial chemistry between characters

Cons:
- final events destroyed the whole story
- insignificant/meaningless conclusion
- use of too much shoujo cliche

Double-edged:
+/- potential to be very good, but it wasn't
+/- female protagonist’s nature/traits are hit or miss

4/10 (BAD)
