I think Planetes is okay so far. The female lead is a bit obnoxious about her opinions, but I think it has potential. Hopefully it'll go better for me than it did for you.

I think FMA is okay; it's just not particularly stand-out. Or rather, there are a handful of stand-out episodes in a sea of average ones. I'll probably finish it since it'll be taking the turn for anime-original soon and that's the main(?) difference between it and Brotherhood. I'd like to save Brotherhood itself for later since I figure it's safe to assume it's at least above average.

Yeah, chore-watching sucks and it kinda defeats the whole point of having this as a hobby anyway. I know how easy it is to get sucked into schedules and stuff though. Hang in there!

I was thinking about taking part in the discussion, but if I do I'll probably just skim through most episodes to refresh my memory rather than do a normal rewatch. I have other stuff I like to do with my free time, and I often won't have much time to watch other anime/do other stuff if I'm simulwatching 2+ shows at the same time (which is what I'm already doing atm since I'm currently simulwatching RahXephon, btw-- it's not something I'd care for when we're talking months rather than weeks).

Something very similar happened with me, actually. The way I handled it was by watching a handful of episodes once a week (sometimes one or two, sometimes a few). It took me nearly half a year to finish it, but I think Space Brothers is a rare example of a show that works much better on a weekly basis than it does on a marathon. I'd probably have burnt out and dropped it if I tried to force myself to marathon it past the initial burst of episodes.

That might be what I end up doing with Planetes too, actually. It seems like a good show, but it feels like a slow burner and I'm not sure if it's something I'll care to watch a lot of at once.

Of course, at some point you have to draw the line, I guess. I've already hit a bit of a motivation slump with the original FMA and Nichijou myself, so eh. I've always had issues with watching multiple long(ish) slow paced shows at once. Maybe that's what's happening with you too? You've got LOGH, Gintama, Space Brothers, Detective Conan (you brave soul), Mushishi... heck, nearly everything you're watching looks like it fits that criteria. Haha.

If that is what's going on, you might be able to spice it up with something shorter and punchier.
