However I hated this episode. Everything feels so cheap, infantile, "in your face", like watching a film with orange and blue scenes. There is no subtleness, the past shown here from Killua and Kanaria even altered how their personalities are to be presented. I love HxH, but this episode to me was 1 out of 5.
As a person who has read all the HxH content up-to-date, I can assure the others that you're utterly wrong.
You never bothered to check what manga I read, did you?

I've checked your list, but haven't bothered mentioning it, because it's obvious that you need to refresh your memory.
I find it immature that others have to bash by just looking at lists. Such a way of discussion is weak.
Also the fact that you keep track of the manga doesn't tell you have to be right always.
Speaking of this week episode...
That Zoldyck family intro is annoying. When it will stop?
That Zoldyck theme played is something, gave me chills this time.
Backstory was pretty nice, Canary so epic. Otherwise Killua was pretty cool. Best moment was Father son chat as well Killua just breaking free. It changed my impression of the family, only the mom seems crazy of sorts, and the way she ran and gets angry.

Yeah, nice argumentation.

I merely said what I thought about the episode. The creature who brought anything about being up to date to the manga was this one up there.
So, shall we refresh our memories, shan't we?
Now, the best way to prove anything it is of course with evidence. Physical evidence clearly isn't an option, so all I'll have it is arguments. Whether anyone will provide a reasonably logical rebuttal it is an entirely different matter. I'm an optimistic person so I hope this will be at least a somewhat decent discussion.
In cinematography, design and so on, one of the first things one would learn is that orange and blue sceneries are easily something that pleases the eyes of the beholder. There are a myriad of techniques such as this one which are replicated frequently in all sorts of media.
From the beginning of Hunter X Hunter many complained that the colours were somewhat happy and gay. Fair enough but at least at that time it could be ignored because it didn't affect much the mood of the characters and everything extra done so far didn't incur much in interfering with any of the characters' story development. The manga is black-and-white(and some tens of shades of gray) and as such some of what happened could be simply an alternative interpretation of the moods of the story.
However this episode in particular the moods are blatantly obvious. The evil sable lair of the "malicious" Silva Zoldyck. The sudden darkened colours of Killua "cold" stare. Even whilst Zeno-sama is mentioned the music switch to a "macabre" soundtrack. If an analogy to comedy sketches were made, HxH would be one of the kind that you laugh whenever the prompt laugher is on. Throughout the manga the shades tend to only change under crucial circumstances.
Like the GonXPitou battle.
The overall effect of this exaggerated mood striking, colours changes and "sinister" music played cheapens the scenes where it would be actually fitting. Or in lay terms; it is trying too hard. I'm even surprised there was no "boo" fright moment or there were nobody trying to attack a person in a shower.
There are many outstanding factors in HxH which contrast many anime, i.e. subtle character development. It doesn't need to tell everything about a character, incidentally the great emphasis given to how their personalities affect everything they do is quite intriguing and one of the most interesting aspects of HxH.
In the original anime, the scenes including Kanaria and Killua interactions were faithful to irides, neither worth of critic nor appraisal. Meanwhile in this episode they took some creative liberty to aim for something different. I do prefer something different, if a person have already watched and read HxH many times, re-envisioning all over again would be an extremely boring exercise. It could've been something worthwhile but alas it altered the way the characters and the story is presented. Kanaria presents to be much less professional, self-engaging into interaction with his patron, inverting the order of the manga, since Killua tried to be friends first, he was the one all this time defying his family urging to do things that none of them appear to have done before, the outstanding quality that differs him and characterises his hidden talents of being the most promising person in the history of the Zoldyck family. Kanaria was originally more inconspicuous who ensured there was a difference in status suddenly became much more friendly, something that is obviously regarded as unprofessional, as it was demonstrated by Gotoh who showed his emotions for Gon and the gang but never doing so in front of any other family member except for Killua and even then in a reserved manner. The Kanaria showed in the new series do not meet the high professional standards expected of her since she attenuated a bit the difference by initialising the conversation. To top it off, whilst in the manga and first anime there were hints that she truly cared about Killua and only a confirmation by the end when her breakdown happened, in this instance there was no subtleness, a kindergarten student would have been able to tell she wanted to befriend Killua. Both characters deviating from their personalities, in order to facilitate to and bring in the peanut gallery and more audience.

Not that I mind you disliking this episode, but none of what you offer are arguments. It is merely your preference. Therefore none can offer "logical rebuttals".
On topic, it was an okay episode, but I thought the tension died rather quickly.
I never really remarked that before but the BGM is seriously awesome. Great episode anyway, very faithful to the original material. Well, anything Kirua-related is fantastic.
In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same.
His mother's a biach xD
And damn I was shaking during the whole father-son convo. I was expecting him to flip at some moment. He might be as evil as the rest, but Silva at least respects Killua's wishes.

umm.. we'll see about that..
Good episode it was.. Canary's backstory was better in the 1999 version, but i guess they did add some stuff if i'm remembering correctly, didn't they ?
Killua's father still as awesome as he was, mother and that fat guy still too damn annoying, lil sis still dark and silent, Grandpa.. nothing much from him here but i liked him
especially after that castle's infiltration in the manga

Killua's father is crazy as well. He probably made that promise because he knows that he (father) in the past probably killed his friends so his so will do the same and come back as an assassin like in Naruto xD.

The author has done a great job with this family unit.
Nobody's worst then the other, even a likeable main who's oppose to his sociopathic family isn't allowed to take any moral highground and doesn't attempt to - the understanding dad turns creepy and the grandad who comes across as wise an social wears a 'one kill a day' logo.
I'm wondering if people have now forgotten how sinister Illumi seemed upon introduction?
I like how Milluki has the better perception on personality types and personal potential then anyone else, even though he's the one who's content in a sheltered life - it shows that being a quite observer is as handy as getting out there.
Loving Canary - it's nice to see a sweet, sensible, non-bipolar girl who can handle herself and others.
The whole meeting with his father has disappointed me, especially because his eyes lucked that intensity that made you feel that you where speaking to a great figure.
Generally the new series feels that it lacks some subtlety and it tries to be more simplistic in the aura it gives.

Maybe because you've read/watched it before?
I don't think it lacks subtlety at all. I mean it's following the manga well without adding some features to characters that cause inconsistencies like the original had with, mainly to Killua.
It still didn't give away anything that will be used in the future while still keeping it there. It feels simple and light because of the artwork which is supposed to look a bit less dark in earlier arcs although it is getting darker as the series progresses.
The pacing seemed off this episode, like it had slowed way down...
In the old version they spent a lot of time at the training which was covered in one episode this time.
So going into canary's back story seemed like they were trying to lengthen out the scene; but I haven't read the manga and going from what people are saying, I will assume that the backstory was in the manga but omitted in the original production...
another possible reason though is that I had a "Oh the managaka is on hiatus again" mentality when I watched this episode
I'm surprised by how well the remake is dealing with the darker themes... they're not shying away from the violence and blood, and they're not covering up what's actually happening. I'm glad the censorship's getting better. I don't really have any complaints about the new version anymore, except for the background music~
Surprised that they included stuff that wasn't in the manga though... (at least, where I've read. I'm reading it pretty much alongside the new anime so it might be there later.) So far the remake's abandoned all the original's extra padding, so it was strange that they elaborated on Killua and Kanaria's past. Not complaining though, it just surprised me to see it XD.
Killua's face when Milluki mentioned killing Gon, Kurapika and Leorio! He looked so nuts whut.
Oh, and someone needs to kill his mother already. *glares*
Incredible episode. I find Killua so much more menacing here, and it's obvious the Zoldyck family has a completely different way of life. Such as how the mother actually seemed proud of Killua for threatening her at the end. I like how this series is gradually escalating the tone throughout.

I love it when something is subtle. But there is a time and place for it and this is not a fitting situation for it. You NEED to have the creepiness shoved in your face here, to understand that these people are not normal by any stretch of the imagination. It gives you a firm grip of what Killua is really like. Can't speak much about the Canary and Killua scene, but it seems most of the manga readers are happy with it so I'm pretty certain that isn't the case.

"Yes, I have been deprived of emotion. But not completely. Whoever did it, botched the job."
If there's one thing that's been lacking in this version of Hunter x Hunter, it's definitely the overly bombastic and jarring OST. The '99 soundtrack was superior in every way.
...fortunately, lately the music has gotten much better. This episode, in particular, had some nice tracks. The music is slowly but surely improving.
Man, that Zoldyck family sure is menacing and intriguing. Even on my second viewing of this arc, I still can't tell whether Silva has any love for Killua, or is simply manipulating him.
Panaru said: Score. Silva has been the first character that I think hands down has a better voice actor than the original anime.
I also like the portrayal of Kanaria and Killua's relationship here better than the original.

Love that pic of Killua. This episode was done better than the original, for once.
the fat brother is lacking in aura and looks of assassins, also he does not sound or act like one. The mother is a wacko and dressed out of place.those 2 give me the impression that they are the weakest, an easy win.
Also, wasn't canary suppose to expunge those who crossed the line? she clearly went out of the boundary she set to kick those bandits' butt. It may look cool and all, but they should remember what the character said and stick too it, or explain why the characters did not.
Awesome episode. Even better than the old version. I really liked Canary's past and how she defeated the bandits. The Zoldyck family soundtrack is awesome not as good as the old one though. Killua with that face, loved it. Silva and Zeno badass just like I remembered them.
Meh don't really like that girl in the first half so she is not that interesting. But the thing helps makes the episode good is the father son talk that was nice.
3.5/5 round to 5
The father son talk was interesting, Killua's dad seems like a reasonable and understanding guy. At least seems, since the last part of the episode he looked a bit maniacal. I'm a bit surprised at how Killua was just let go and that there haven't really been any serious confrontations, but something may be cooking up now that the mom is losing her marbles.
the mom's hysterical, the dad looks like a deranged archangel, the little sis is mysterious and pretty, the fat bro's funny-dumb, there's a grandpa that lets you root for someone, and of course killua's perfect and my fav char
so the whole zoldyk family rocks. theyre all just so insane and quirky, i was entertained the whole episode because i never knew what was up. killua too - he's obviously a good guy, but as a fellow zoldyk, he always keeps you on your toes cause you never know when those killer instincts will catch you by surprise.
Killua seems to not have been affected by the torture. Good thing.
Mother seems to be unable to control Killua. Good thing.
Silva Giving the green light to Killua. Good thing? maybe not? I have no idea.
Killua is a dark person which is perfectly understandable, and he is ultra competitive. I don't know how much influence these parts of him will have, but honestly, I can totally seem turning rotter in the far future. He has already shown that he can kill without any remorse. He is an assassin after all, but will those methods mesh with Gon's team.

This has "best friends become arch enemies" written all over it! Killua even looks like a young Gryfith from Berserk lol. Not to mention the whole white hair dark hair contrast.
I'm surprised this "arc" ended so abruptly! This show is breaking all the rules of action Shonen fight sequence opportunities!

I always liked how it ended, I'll be honest and say this arc is probably my least favorite of the series, except for that excellent moment between Killua and his father. I wonder if Togashi didn't like it and said "fuck this, I'm done".

This wasn't really an arc, more like an extension of the exam/pre- for HA, so there wasn't supposed to be a full-out storyline here, just a detour, I honestly don't see how we could expect any more content out of it, especially since it done enough to explore a bit more about Gon.

Actually, yeah, you are probably right. I guess coming in I sort of expected them to have to fight through a bunch of guards alah, my recent foray with DB in the Muscle Tower arc. I am very, very glad Togashi didn't go that route. The point of this was indeed to cover some more backstory for Killua and give us more of a feel for Gon's personality.
"Yes, I have been deprived of emotion. But not completely. Whoever did it, botched the job."
I felt like there were a lot of mindfucks in this episode. From the point when I saw the mom spying on Killua while he was asking the apprentice butler if she would be his friend, I realized she was obssessed with him. So he's with the potential to be the strongest yay :) n his grandpa seems to be nice. I imagined the family being more emotionless, kinda like Illumi. The dad has the same look (if I can call it that) in his eyes as Illumi and the whole time he was talking with Killua I was expecting him to hit Killua or threaten him.. or w.e. I'm guessing in the future, he'll make Killua betray his friends or something in order to come back home to lead the family or w.e. But anyway I hope Killua will surpass the other members of his family quick! ah-ah~ I'm a sucker for happy endings...
Wow, he has a horrible family... his dad was really good there at the end... but the last few lines he said changed my mind on him a bit... he thinks Killua will come back and join their shitty family to become an assassin.
