Battle shounen do get worse and worse do they ? It seems these days either the series lose their breath midway because they drag too much/keep getting worse (Bleach, Naruto, One Piece) or end up milked af like Dragon Ball. Or there's HxH that never manages to find a flow because it keeps going on hiatuses. I even have difficulty finding new ones to look forward to, NnT is probably the most decent one out there in the new wave and like I said it didn't impress me too much... The Big Three era is far behind us.
Napoleon (4 episodes mini series) and Versailles. The Count of Monte Cristo, one of the best stories ever written.

I was going to say DC is going to be an even darker arc than CA but since we probably won't see the rest before a year...
Never got around to reading Magi. It looked a lot like Fairy Tail from the glimpses I got so I tried to stay away as far as possible. (yeah I know I must have been wrong, don't hit me plz T_T)
I can't help you with fantasy but I have a few good historical and war/politic centered shows under my sleeve I guess. 2 of them are French unfortunately. One recent about Louis XIV's rise and rule but only available in the original language, the other is about Napoleon's ascension and IS available in english, but you would have to put up with the glorious accents because the actors actually shot in both languages lol. Other than that you could give a shot to The Borgias I guess, never watched it keenly but it left a good impression on me when I watched the first season. Of course it's not George RR level shit but these shows make do.

Hmm politics seem kinda like Legend of Korra from your description, that would be perfect. Yeah probably gonna follow your example and take it one spoon at a time. Though if the series really is that good my binge reading compulsion is prone to take over and I'd just eat it in a few days ^^
Oh the Battle of Bastards lmao. Great direction, some meh military decisions. I was wondering the whole time why the giant didn't pick up a weapon in the first place or use some armor (some chunk of wood or something), would've made a huge difference. Heck he could use the corpses as weapons instead of doing brutal fatalities to entertain the crowd. At least they got the phalanx formation right. Getting technical details and making connection between them definitely isn't D&D's forte. I hear Jon's strategy was inspired by Hannibal's Battle of Cannae. Too bad LF appeared like Gandalf to fodderize Ramsay's army thus negating the point of the tactic. Still it was a blast to watch, I had a run for my money.
Yup that's probably what put me off from Nanatsu no Taizai, wanted to punch the MC in the face, humor didn't sit well with me and the heroine was so freaking dumb and bland... Too bad because the rest of the cast is pretty cool. As for One Piece I had a small light of hope when Oda was hyping up Jack, then Oda went full ballsless as usual and used a stupid plot device to rekt him. WTF. Now I have to go through a whole Big Mom arc to get to the Kaido part. Because at least Kaido acts like a real pirate: develops an army with artificial drugs, tries to control the black market, uses underhanded tactics to get what he wants even though he's a BAMF. Him and BB are the real shit, then the next chapter you see Luffy refusing a WHOLE FUCKING FLEET for... Wait did he even have a reason in the first place other than him being a moral fag ? Worst is now that Kidd has been destroyed by Kaido, Oda has an open door to make him ally with Luffy and Law, instead of pitting them against each other like it was initially supposed to be. smh
I have to be honest here and say the latest arc isn't all that great compared to the prologue and the Ketil Farm arc. It wasn't so bad for me since I binged it last week or so, but I can easily guess it would be hard to go through for someone following it monthly. Still, I thought this month's chapter was pretty good. We finally get a glimpse at Thorfinn starting to truly find his way (in the same manner of his dad) and the way the author is setting up the next arc (which seems to be the most action oriented one since the prologue), his conviction is already going to be challenged hard. Being a sucker for redemption stories where the MC goes through hell in order to fulfill it, I'm definitely looking forward to it.
Political intrigues eh, sort of like ASOIAF ? But I hear the manga is pretty "shounen-esque" as in the way it tackles the battles and so on. I suppose we also get the the second face of the war with the importance of economy, reputation and food ?
Oh and I noticed you've given quite a low score to One Piece. I think I'm feeling you more and more, I'm practically dragging myself to read each chapter when they come out. Doesn't help when the current arc is centered around Big Mom (aka the most underwhelming Yonkou) and Luffy still acts as the piece of shit he's always been... Maybe I'm just getting too old for the classic battle shounen archetype and its codes.

Thought I should ask how you think Kingdom holds up compared to other historical setting mangas ? I doubt it's much similar to introspection focused works like VS and Vagabond but I dunno, I sense a similar vibe from it. I'm a bit hesitant, the length of the whole thing is pretty scary too...

What's your reason for having Film Z rated higher than anything else OP related? Is it because the villain has more depth than most of the others and the plot is a lot more focused?
