yea i agree with you. I've heard about Howard Hawks before
many people told me he's an auteur legend in his own right

i've seen some of his films already (his girl friday, the big sleep, scarface)
love his choice of style! and i wonder if he's considred a minimalist by content

There are many filmmakers that i look up to
among them, these stand out to me the most: akira kurosawa, stanley kubrick, takeshi kitano. david lynch, satoshi kon, apichatpong weerasethakul, terry gilliam, andrei tarkovsky, tsai ming liang

as you might tell, i'm not that much of a fan of realism (except for some of the popular works by well-known directors, such as akira kurosawa)
i love fictional stories way more and i adore the use of surrealism/magical realism either as the cinematic direction of the film or a visual appeal

i'm glad you enjoyed it then! i haven't been watching any western movies recently
guess it's time for some review

well... I've added more anime onto my list today... before i reply to you lol
i've been watching anime for an entire decade and it's practically a part of my life now
everyday i could spare myself some time and dedicate it to this medium

how would rank kurosawa's films then?
do you have a top 3?

to me the top 3 would be: 1 ikuru, 2 seven samurai, 3 ran

Sorry for the delay.

Been playing the aftergame of Yakuza 0. Strong recommendation from me. Took the series a while to find success in the West. It's been poorly handled, localized, and attended to in the West. The title "Yakuza," for example, is awful. Ryu ga gotoku translates to like a dragon, which makes far more sense considering the themes, main character, and spin-off titles that don't involve the Yakuza in any form. The first PS2 game had an English dub, but severely increased the profanity and dry dialogue. Even with Mark Hamil, the dubbing is atrocious. Throughout the series release in the West, content has been removed because Sega thought such content wouldn't resonate with a Western audience, despite a selling point being how Japanese the series is. It took 3 years for the 5th main game (which many regard as the best in the series) to be released outside of Japan as a digital-only release. I wonder how many other series had their potential squandered through awful mismanagement like the Ryu Ga Gotoku series. Also makes me ponder how much a localization can change perspective on a series. Not every franchise has multiple chances like RGG did.

I am continuing to watch Legends of the Galactic Heroes. The book series was written from 1982 to 1987. All the main topics related to bureaucracy, government, society's obligations to its citizens and vice versa, the role of the military, ect... are still relevant. The author Tanaka based the many of the core conflicts and discussions from events that transpired throughout history. The fact that someone could recognize tension and contradictions in the way humanity governs itself 40 years ago, write about it, and for those problems to not only persist but proliferate leaves me sullen. Many modern issues that receive media attention are non-issues comparatively to other problems such as physiological and economic sustainability. In a conversation between Wen-li and Reinhard, Yang states the failures of democracy lie upon its citizens. If so, those failings are more severe now that we live in an age with internet. Information is available, propagates, reported, and created at rates many fold beyond what it was when LotGH was published. The same topics LotGH presented and discussed persist. Perhaps such topics are perennial. Perhaps not.
In LotGH, Yang stated humans need societies, but they don't necessarily need nations. While true, the formation of nations has drastically increased the living quality of people. Literacy rates, municipal functions, communal identity, and human rights have all increased since its formation. Humans transferred to a new style of government based on checks and balances after realizing how inept they were at governing themselves. Recently and presently, the world's most powerful nation nearly passed dictum to give ISPs more control over the way the internet is made available to the public. I'm ambivalent toward many things, but I've never known of an occurrence where constricting the availability of information to the masses to have a positive result.

Also I watched JoJo. The anime adaptation of Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency were great. Cheesy as hell with falling scenes that last over a minute and Nazi cyborgs. The fandom is hilarious as well. This video is enlightening on an aspect the series didn't go into much detail over:

I havered. Don't know if you're interested in this kind of discourse. I saw you were into Berserk, Vagabond, Fate/Stay Night, and Legends of the Galactic Heroes, so I left a comment.

yeah...about that, apologies for my always massive walls of text lol -.-

Take your time!
LadyBeato Aug 8, 2019 10:48 PM
I see you've changed your profile pic again. it was tough living in SoCal during the Kobe era while the Dubs were still a shitty team lol.

Nah, it's the Trails/Kiseki series. It's easily become my FAVORITE game series of all time. The overarching story over 9 games (the 8th one is coming out in the West this October) is absolutely incredible. The worldbuilding, politics, and character development is on a scale I've never seen before, maybe aside from asoiaf. And the NPC stories...oh gawd the npc stories. Never before have I seen so many npcs having names, and their own families, and their own lives while the characters are just doing their own thing. It makes it so the game is very text heavy though, since there's so much incredible NPC dialogue. Though of course a player doesn't HAVE to talk to them...though I would say that's definitely missing out on one of the things that sets this series apart from any other.
I haven't played RDR2 yet, though I've heard only great things about it. I'm sure I'll get to it eventually. But I gotta finish some other stuff on my backlog first. Wow you've been diving into some games yourself! Cyberpunk 2077 definitely is on my watch list, though I'll definitely be playing P5R over it (as I suspect that the Western release will be somewhere in the Spring). '

And on my end I just don't have as much time to just PLAY games anymore since I finally bit the dust and started my own youtube channel last December. Creating videos and being active with the community sure cuts into the free time I do have lol. It''s been a lot of fun though, but now I'm being asked to stream the new game coming out in the Trails series. So I'll have to see what I can do based on time :/

Sounds like it's been a really fun summer on your end! It's awesome that you could make time for cool activities despite work :) I can definitely understand the booze weight gain. I've had to count calories for a while haha. There's always next summer to go for dat bod right? :p Oh I see...I hope you're able to reconnect to your love of reading soon! And nah! it's not weird to hear that about the weather at all to me; one of the biggest reasons I love living on the Bay over where I used to live in SoCal is because of the nice chilly weather. I can't stand the heat myself, so sorry to hear there's been quite a heat wave over on the eastern side of the continent.
On my end I've just been meeting up with family and friends here and there when they come to town, and then lots of community chatting about everything games and anime on the joint Discord server I have with my main collaborator ^^

Ouch, "having the snake gone" LOL. Yeah there's a TON of changes/trades in the NBA this year. I'm really curious to see how the season fares. I know for sure that Golden State is gonna struggle some in a packed Western conference this year. Oh geez that pic :/ Yeah, Kawhi definitely wasn't there long...Rockets is packed this season. Western conference just seems insane to me...

Wow, so much to say about JoJo's so far, geez. I'll try to keep it short for now and just say that so far (since I'm anime only and have only just finished part 4), there's so much to like about each part. And I like each one for different reasons. I think the most emotive one for me personally is Stardust Crusaders. Just cuz I could really get behind the "journey feel with some great company" it was going for. The execution might not have been superb, but I got the message. And HOLY SHIT. the symbolism in these openings in hindsight is INSANE. Kudos to DP on making openings I never skip! And endings too! I was already aware that the first season uses Roundabout because of that meme, but I'm really impressed that DP is able to get the rights to all these super well-known Western hits for the endings. Though the ending sequence for the second season of SDC is one of the best I've seen on a thematic, aesthetic, and emotive level. Really reminded me of the ED sequences of Bokurano. Yeah come to think of it, I never skip the EDs in JoJo's either.
There was a lot I liked about Battle tendency. And also a lot that I liked about DiU. I can see how on an objective writing scale, DiU beats out SDC. The stands were more interesting, especially considering that there are other "good guys" who have stands yet don't use it to fight/battle. And the character development was a lot more detailed and less subtle/oddly placed than the previous arcs. But it honestly just didn't do that much for me on an emotive level. I hear a lot that the pacing of SDC ruined it for a lot of people, and I can definitely understand that, especially for those who watched it as it was airing. For someone like me who was able to watch it all in one go though, I think the pacing is definitely not as bad when you don't have to wait so long in between episodes for the next release.
But otherwise, don't get me wrong, I still love Morioh and the cast, but the overall goal and the thematic concept of "time and fated showdown" of pt 3, not to mention I just prefer the crew of SDC, eeks it out over DiU for me. Now onwards to pt 5 to see how my mind changes then. And then of course after I finish that I'll have to start reading the manga. From what I've heard about it, I think out of all of the next parts, I'll probably really enjoy pt 7.
And no! One Piece honestly just kind of fell to the wayside, since it was around that time that I just started playing the Trails series. I think I got to around ch 50 of it, but then I kinda just...eventually stopped reading it. I'll return at some point, but it won't be anytime soon :/

Yeah I agree with you with a lot of what happened after the time skip/shake up with Friend. I still enjoyed it for sure, but I agree that Kanna got a lot of screentime without really adding much in a meaningful way. I like how you describe it though- that the atmosphere of the whole thing kept me on my toes even though the second half was definitely not as great as the first.
MAYOIII Aug 8, 2019 8:56 PM
yes for sure! i'm not sure if this is a popular opinion but i do think he's overshadowed by the likes of kubrick, hitchcock, lynch etc the big shots practically since his way of expressing his ideas wasn't deemed 'sexy' or 'creatively bold' like the others

what are some of your other favorite directors then if you want to share?
i do have some of his lesser known films added onto my watchlist so we'll see

yee-haw, then i'm looking forward to hear your opinions after you finish it then partner

that's an interesting vagabond pic for sure lol where did you find it?
and now you're watching champloo
i guess you're pretty into samurais right? bet you're a fan of kurosawa then
Rsurect Aug 8, 2019 7:28 AM
according to atlus, anyway how are you?
Rsurect Aug 7, 2019 9:28 AM
considering the amount they're adding on to it it's starting to look like a new game more and more, they've even gone so far as to say that royal will be bigger than og 5 and 4 golden combined
Rsurect Aug 7, 2019 4:09 AM
persona 5 a favorite? have you seen how much they're adding upon it with royal?
literaturenerd Aug 6, 2019 11:27 PM
Mad Bull 34 is actually my favorite "so bad it's good anime". Sadly, it was one of my earlier reviews and I didn't quite capture how awesomely terrible it is.
MAYOIII Aug 5, 2019 5:15 AM
i see... and i'm not surprised at all since its the work of a heavenly being that simply cannot be comprehended by mere human like us
well... it seems you've obtained [the black mamba] after fusing with the dribbling baby, another feat of yours that shall be respected

* on a serious note i just realized there is a list of your favorite movies right there
those are some fine picks i reckoned

i need to watch more of billy wilder's films for sure
and for some reasons i'm hoping to see the ox-bow incident on that list of yours
MAYOIII Aug 3, 2019 2:37 PM
your username reminds me of something skippy... very familiar and memeable yet i cannot say
SlightWeeb Jul 30, 2019 2:54 AM Most unfortunate how this ended up being displayed
LadyBeato Jul 25, 2019 2:40 PM
Hey there! Long time no talk ^^' Sorry I never replied from all that time ago. I fell into a rabbit hole when I started what has become my favorite video game series now. Playing 7 ~100 hour games since last October has really taken a toll on my free time though LOL.

How have you been? Been up to anything noteworthy? Any cool summer plans? Your profile pic, while it irks me somewhat, is pretty great haha :P I gotta say congrats to your first NBA title!

Also, I just started watching JoJo's. Even after all the memes and hearing so many people go on about this series for so many years, nothing could prepare me for how cheesy and overblown it is. I love it lol, such a great time.
I see you finished 20th Century Boys. What did you think of the big ending of the first arc and the time skip afterwards?
SlightWeeb Mar 27, 2019 1:56 AM
Good Lordy whoadie man, watching SAO just cause you can? I surmise you've avoided it due to a lack of interest, finally seeing if it lives down to its abhorrent reputation.
Akoryx Oct 9, 2018 5:31 AM
Congrats! Glad you got him, since I believe he was one of your most wanted right? Wait, does that mean you will roll for Quetz? I'd assume that since you have Ozy you wouldn't but the way you worded it sounds like you will? I'm seriously looking forward to adult Penth, whenever that is...

I never wanted to NP5 Kiritsugu, that was the gacha lol. I mainly wanted the CEs and to NP5 Hundred Hassan and I believe I was bored at the time. I will admit Kiritsugu's servant version is cooler than his Zero self. Iskandar is more likable for me now, I think my hate for Zero as a whole has subsided a bit, but the Rider slot is kind of barren of servants I like a lot at the moment as well.

Hey at least he isn't genderbent right? You should do your DNA test, you never know what you might find.

I will be yes, but she isn't a must have since I already have Shuten and want Summer Nito. I have a handful of tickets and just under two 10 rolls for her so hopefully I manage to squeeze out one copy. Speaking of Shuten...HALLOWEEN WELFARE MUTHAFUCKA! Grails are definitely being set aside for her and whatever class slot she happens to fill. I really need to know what class she is as it will determine some of my future rolls and where my grails go.

Won't argue there, it's the fans that primarily ruin her I think, plus the amount of attention she gets is kind of irking. I will await your turn to the darkside with anticipation.

Yeah in JP, anything we don't have yet really. I think Sigurd's second sprite is cool with the half facemask though. The third valk is the closest you are going to get to FemGil lol. I wish they had actually done Skadi without Scathach's design, could have been really cool. Summer Ushi needs a better NP animation though, it's pretty disappointing. I was actually disappointed with last Summers stuff, minus Ibaraki who is decent (that NP)! I was hoping for a foreigner Altera over BB.

What's your current grail forecast atm?
