tsubasalover says that it's being released to DVD after it airs in theatres, but why say it's a "film & OVA" series then? That's not an OVA, as it's not direct-to-video; that's the usual pattern following a movie's release. dtshyk gives a bit more insight, saying that it's released similar to Gundam Unicorn, but afaik Unicorn's release pattern is all over the place.
Is this being released in theatres all across Japan, or only a select few? Are DVDs/BDs only being released later, or simultaneously/close all across Japan? Are the other 3 chapters going to be released the same way, or is that still unknown?
Movie is appropriate.
Akito is being aired all over the place. 37 theaters in Japan for now. That's far more than say Mardock Scramble.
DVD/BDs will be released, like any other movie. Dates are not announced even for the already airing first episode, so it is not even close to the theater premiere date.
I believe the rest of the episodes will follow suit, as episode 2 is already announced to premiere next spring.
Gundam UC released the first BD/DVD a month after the theater premiere/PlayStation Network release. Before that though, UC is officially recognized as an OVA series, and not a movie series. Premiere dates and release dates should only be considered if the official type designation is not clearly available. Like any other movie, if it is being released in theaters first and being released as a DVD/BD later, then it should be considered a movie unless otherwise officially designated.
Akito does not have a PSN release (yet, perhaps). If you want to wait for official updates on BD/DVD release dates, then we can just temporarily keep it one or the other and change it later. However, Akito is officially recognized as a movie series (or rather, not asserted that it is an OVA series being released in theaters), like Towa no Quon and Mardock Scramble, so such consideration should be unnecessary.
Yes, there was previous news about it being released as a "film and OVA" series, but this is not like Yamato 2199, where the movie series is only 7 episodes while the OVA release is 26 episodes nor does the content between the two media differ. There is no reason to have to make two entries for Akito in this way. Therefore, circumstances would favor it being recognized as a movie series.
iirc, the intention of the "film and OVA" phrasing was simply to deny the 3rd TV series rumor at the time. The original announcement came from the blog of a staff member, and the use of these terms were colloquial, so-to-speak. Moreover, there was also some confusion with Nunnally in Wonderland, which was also announced at the same time as an OVA, often in the same news article. |
