Good first episode very colorful and bright take on the art this time around, despite the kinda annoying song in the OP it reminded me of the Haruhi Suzumiya Op lol mainly the dancing in cheerleading outfits.

with that being said there is some similarly to this and Haruhi though this seems to be more about humor let's just see if Rikka weirdness is the real deal or another Kobato haha either will hopefully it makes for some good laughs.

Eh, that was weird. Kinda interesting, but not THAT great. Art is awesome, but animation is pretty weak for a KyoAni show. Can't blame them, after animatin Hyouka...

3/5

I think you're confusing animation with art here. Chuuni has a simpler aesthetic compared to Hyouka, but in terms of animation, showing movement, Chuuni's first episode is marvelous. Many well-animated cuts, I'd say it might be the best-animated debut episode of the season.

No, the art is pretty bright, and it's great. But a few scenes had somewhat sloppy animation, mostly in the backgrounds. It's nothing major tho.

I agree with Solkiskey. Some parts of motions looks rather dull compared to, say, Hyouka.
It's not bad, of course not. Rather, it's great. It's just a bit lower than usual KyoAni's standard, which has always been superior.
It seems that they have less sponsors for this show because it's their own novel, or so I've heard.

A heckload of similarities to Haruhi though.

Pretty enjoyable introductory episode, though slightly disappointing, yet I’m expecting quite a bit more for future episodes, because, despite the few flaws present in this episode, the characters and story definitely have a lot of potential. The lighthearted, humorous tone of the story really worked here. Of course, there's barely any subtlety in it's execution, but that's hardly a complaint, since that's part of it's distinguishing appeal.

I like the strange, embarrassing nature of the events that unfolded throughout this episode, particularly whenever Rikka would demonstrate her false "abilities" in front of other, unsuspecting people. These isolated moments that dealt with the main character's unleashing their fantasized powers were quite well done, and I'm rather excited to see how creative these sequences become over time. I also enjoyed the brief glimpse of Yuuta's family, since they seem likely to provide some excellent humor in the future. The ending was especially good, as Rikka persuades Yuuta to refrain from trashing his youthful possesions, followed by his momentary lack of restraint, as he indulges his chuunibyou inclinations in order to satisfy Rikka's intensifying curiosity and to rectify her momentary disappointment.

Rikka was great, and often amusingly cute, although I can certainly understand why some might view her as annoying, since her relative immaturity can be off-putting. I really like Yuuta and his somewhat contrasting characterization, as he's considerably embarrassed by his chuunibyou phase, and seems entirely reluctant to slip into that abnormality. I'm hoping that the primary focus will continue to reside on Yuuta and Rikka and the development of their relationship, as their interactions are definitely, up to this point, the best element of the show. As such, their relationship is really good so far, due particularly to their superb chemistry, which is certainly elevated by the excellent voice acting, allowing them to play off each other's contrasting quirks quite well. I'd much prefer it if the side characters don't interfere too greatly moving forward, as the story might lose a portion of it's charm.

It will be really interesting to see how Rikka and Yuuta will develop, and if this condition will, by the end, be embraced by Yuuta or discarded by Rikka. Of course, it could take neither of these directions, but I think the character development can be quite rewarding and complex if it takes the route of Rikka, with Yuuta's help, moving past her fanciful delusions to the point where she eventually understands and embraces the importance of maturing into adulthood.

The production elements are inconsistent in quality, and, of course, not up to the level of Hyouka's, but not much else is, so that's hardly a significant complaint. For instance, the background art isn't nearly as visually impressive as Hyouka's, as it comparatively lacks that incredible attention to detail that was consistently present in the latter. The animation though, is superb, particularly in how it excellently captures the fluidity in Rikka's slightly exaggerated movements. The direction was impressive, as it handled the pacing of the episode in an excellent manner, introducing the main characters in a lighthearted, humorous fashion that immediately illuminated their unique personalities, while remaining interesting throughout. The character designs are, for the most part, thoroughly mediocre, but certainly not bad.

Although the OP is rather poor visually, the music is quite good. As for the ED, it's a marked improvement over the OP, but, yet again, rather unremarkable, save for the nice song.

All in all, Chuunibyou is an intriguing and enjoyable show that, despite several mediocre aspects, is rather promising, due mostly to the greatly endearing characters and story. The first episode managed to balance the embarassing situations, bits of introductory character development, and the numerous, occasionally romantic interactions between the main pair surprisingly well, rarely failing to impress in those areas. I'm rather looking forward to the next episode, and I have confidence that it will improve, even though it doesn't necessarily need to.

The only thing I didn't like was during the scene in the nurse's office; there was a part that gave off the wrong vibe. I know the background music was eerie because it appeared to Yuuta that Rikka magically knew about his Dark Flame Master persona, but the lack of a light-hearted tune made his physical abuse of her come across wrong (even though it was comedic violence). I think they would've been better off leaving that gag out, it wasn't really the right time to throw a joke in anyway. But when she started tearing up after he hit her on the head, it wasn't very nice to watch at all.

Or am I the only one who felt that way? Maybe I'm just overly-sensitive.

I actually thought this was really enjoyable. I wasn't so sure about this show at first but I just really really liked this episode aaahhh.
I like the art/animation as well. The characters are all like moe to the max and have really shiny hair but it's adorable.

This episode was just a nice start to the series, it was cute and silly and fun to watch. uwu

I'm a little disappointed. Though I knew it probably wouldn't be that way, the trailer apparently was misleading. However, there is room for optimism that this will be unusual and interesting. We'll see. Given the ratio of boys and girls (one boy, many girls) in the op/en I'm wondering if this will turn into a harem - I hope not.

It will most likely be a harem. I have no idea why you would expect otherwise.

This episode was great. With this kind of premise, you can be expecting a bunch of off the wall hi-jinx to follow in the coming weeks.
If people were actually expecting anything deep...lolwhat? I mean if the OP didn't cue you into what this show's gonna be like, I mean really...lolwhat?

as an aside, that fast forward shot in the ED was brilliantly shot, it just looked so awesome

I highly doubt it will be a harem. Aside from another one of the girls possibly liking him, it seems set to solely be a romantic comedy, particularly because of some of the interviews with the director that I've read.

The PV and trailers were quite misleading. Then again I didn't know what 'chuunibyou' meant, now it makes sense.

However, I enjoyed this first episode heaps . Rikka is such a quirky character, but that's what I love about her. She's a chuunibyou. Her 'Tyrant's Eye of Truth' is actually a golden/yellow contact under her eye-patch. xD Man, I love that fact she's voiced by Maaya Uchida. Seems there are like 3 other main girls eh? I'm looking forward to the next episode, seems very promising.

Kyoto Animations never ceases to amaze me with their gorgeous animation. OP was quite nice, very catchy I admit but that ED is so fucking awesome omfg! Cannot get enough of IT!

I came in expecting nothing and was STILL disappointed.

I'm confused why I'm even remotely interested in seeing if anything interesting happens next episode... when I was bored out of my brain the whole time.

Typical KyoAni moeblobs. Also typical stuffing of fanservice into OP and ED, and stealth-fanservice during the show. None of it's necessary when everything's moe already. Even the ADULTS are fuckin' moe (they don't even look like adults...).

Will probably give it one more episode before I give up.

After all they both came from the same animation studio, so they could somehow use Oreki as a reference to their characters design, and the art is pretty much like K-On in some aspects. ( and Nichijou as well, pay attention to the appearance of the youngest imouto in rikka's family, she seems like professor Hakase.)

Very entertaining episode, solid start with a gag anime. I wouldn't expect more from Kyo Ani, but I want moar of their anime xD. 12episode as expected to adapt their own light novel, so it's obvious that this anime is just a mean to advertise the original novel(2volume currently).

Good music, quality animation, nice art styles, comedy in chuuni doesn't bore me even a bit. Oh it's Kyo Ani btw, moeness is always over 9000, but as long as the show itself is entertaining to watch, it doesn't matter.

Yuuta resembles a younger Oreki. ;3

I love the ED, someone mentioned it, but it reminds me of K-ON's EDs. The OP is really catchy too, but it flashes so much so those with ellipsy, watch out.

Yuuta's baby sister. SLDKF:SLDKFLDS SO ADORABLE. SLKF:DLKF:LSKDF:SLDKF -dies of adorableness- IT'S KILLING ME. Also, Rikka herself is so awesome. She's such a cool heroine.

Dekomori (lol) seems interesting, and Kumin feels like the kind of girl that would normally annoy me (but we'll see about that when the time comes- she hasn't even appeared yet), and Shinka seems interesting too.

Is Satone going to be in this?? Is she?!

Anyways, I'm looking forward to the next episode.

Well, aside from the fact that the OP was one of the most terrible things I've ever seen and everything in it and the ED point to fanservice and harem, I actually found this quite refreshing compared to other KyoAni shows (note: not necessarily better or worse, just refreshing). I can enjoy watching some make-believe (I loved Arakawa under the bridge) so this is actually right up my alley. Compared to shows like Hyouka and Clannad this is quite different (not counting the beginning part with the boy-meets-girl-under-weird-circumstances). The art and character designs are less refined and more cutesy, but it fits the tone of the show that is somehow more lighthearted and for me a lot less pretentious than in the above mentioned series. Unless with Hyouka I already know after the first episode more or less what to expect from this series in terms of genres and what it will focus on, so I don't have too high expectations that will later fail me. The only question is how much and how bad the fanservice will be and if they manage to make me not get annoyed with the kinda harem-ish setting that the OP and ED propose. Some series managed it before, but it's rarely been done.
In any case, I'm sticking to this for now.
My bottom line: I find the sillyness refreshing after the pretentious-ish-ness of Hyouka and the likes, we'll see where it goes from there.
I probably regret this post by now.
