THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Jumping Gundam is both strangely retarded and cool at the same time.

Matilda and 'her lingering fragrance' look interesting. :D

But the highlight of the episode was this:

"You hit me twice! Even my father didnt hit me!"
"That's why you're soft! Growing up without getting hit will never make you a man!"
"I'm starting to think mal is run by Xinil generating electricity on a bicycle." - idklol

Brighto punch is a force to be reckoned with. I watched the movie trilogy instead of the series and I still remember those lines clearly :P.

I was also considering watching the movies but thanks to sixtydeuce's subbing efforts am able to enjoy the original series from the very beginning. Nice to know that punch remains in the movie trilogy, haha.

hahah, I keep forgetting how old this series is. A couple of episodes ago it was, "I wish Bright-san would give orders. I'll never understand taking orders from a woman." And now it's, "Frau Bow, you'll never be able to pilot the Gundam."

But I have to agree, the greatest line was - "Even my father didn't hit me!"

It's hilarious how sexist this show is. xD

It's also amusing that, since the anime is so sold, Amuro didn't blush when speaking to that Matilda woman... it would be too much to bear. The narrator even went as far as saying it was the first time Amuro "noticed the scent of a woman". xD

Many good quotes in this episode, lol. It's interesting to see Amuro's combat abilities evolve so much every fight.

Hope we see more of Matilda.

You know I can see where Amuro is coming from, he is pretty much been fighting none stop. This Matilda person isn't going to help the situation any though. Poor Fraw Bow.

Kai doing awesome.

Bright Punch.

Char seemingly wanting Garma dead.

Flying Gundam.

Amuro finally having stress catch up to him.

Good solid episode.

I'm a bit of a sexist myself, so I don't really mind his comments lol

that slapping scene was awesome :D

And I think I had a whiff of her fragrance too ;)
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

This is really, really getting good now. I feel like my interest really jumped up with this episode more than ever before.

Char and Sayla are hands down the coolest characters in the show, I guess it runs in the family. Charcorrectly deduces EVERYTHING about White Base's actions, to an unrealistic accuracy.

I was surprised to see no one here bashing Amuro for wanting to quit. That punch was well-deserved, but I don't find too much fault with Amuro as a 16 year old in his situation. Frau's a really strong girl, almost unrealistically so at this point.

Funny, I sensed Amuro's attraction to Matilda (I'm usually somewhat oblivious to these things), and then they went and outright said it. I liked Frau playing the jealous female friend in typical anime fashion.

Char somehow managed to insult and flatter that Garma dude. That's talent. I still can't guess what he's up to, though.

And finally someone slapped Amuro!

Now I can officially say this is getting awesome.
Char is up to something and I want to know what exactly. So far, his intelligence and personality make him my favorite.
Garma's pride and family relationships are a bonus to his character, he's a close second favorite.
The slapping scene was my favorite though, Amuro (and his whiny attitude) was starting to be very annoying.

glad to see people loving and enjoying original MSG - I remeber this bright slap like I only watched it yesterday :p - surely a good sign...

I have to say I remember when watching this (it was one of my first anime to 'properly' watch) saying to myself 'God Amuro is such a whinger!', little did I know that relative to his descendents in later Gundam's he was a veritable laconic gruff Eastwood type character :D - especially when compared to whinge-master Kamille ^_^

Amuro's sexist comments still annoy me, but I can see where he is coming from. Though, refusing to fight in the middle of a deadly battle is, well, foolish. Am I the only one who thinks these so called "bright slaps" are kind of...counter intuitive? What if they only caused Amuro to further retreat into his shell? If he wasn't such a strong character, and believe me aside from some of his actions he is strong, these acts of psychical violence could do more harm than good.

I'm assuming that Amuro will keep on spewing his sexism throughout the series. Sigh.

I wonder that they spoke like Gundam could only be piloted by Amuro. Since it has learning computer maybe it is now locked to Amuro and they do not know how to reset it? They should add autopilot to Gundam just like Nerv did in case of whiny pilots not wanting to do their job in middle of battle.

I'm not excusing some of Amuro's lines because of how dated this is but I sometimes still think: oh you, silly 70s/early 80s.

But he's been hit twice now.
You hear that Amuro's father? Your son is a man now.
He can now truly pilot his Gundamu and do other manly things.

Amuro played The Shinji Pussy for a while but it got boring fast so he decided to go kill some more Zeon mobile suits.

"I'm a MAN now!!!!!"

That line cracked me up

Amuro is such an annoying character I can't take him seriously and that kinda makes him cool.

The strategy Amuro came up with was kinda stupid but well. I guess things worked like that back in 1979. I also can't believe they've been flying on the same continent for like 5 episodes now (several days). A normal plane nowdays does the job in 10 hours tops.

Another awesome episode :)

I'm surprise Amuro is sulking like this. I was thinking he would have gotten over this a few episodes ago, but it keeps coming back.

It seems Char is the main drive for him to pilot the Gundam :)

That bright slap and punch!!! Definitely the highlight of the show!

I even lol'd when he said "not even my father hit so many times like this" He's definitely spoiled as hell as a child!

I think people are taking things for granted on why the jumping Gundam is amazing at that time.

Nowadays, Gundams can go on full boost and can attack the enemy in mere seconds. This maybe a little thing, but i really appreciate how back then a jumping Gundam is already badass as it is.

Char probably either wanted Garma to be dead or wants Amuro by himself. Such a cunning strategist he is :P

Matilda san!! She's such a beauty!!

"her lingering fragrance"

Lol 1970s is such an interesting time!

Even Amuro is amaze by her "fragrance"!! Frau seems to be jealous :P

I can't wait for the next episode!!!

Guys, you are overdoing things about the "sexist" comments.

Amuro telling Frau Bow that she couldn't use the Gundam was not sexist, just reality. Amuro has been the one using it since the first episode, and I am not even sure Frau Bow knows anything about robotic and all. Even Bright said he could not do it.

Also, for those who hate Amuro for his whiny personality, remember he is just a normal boy that have to fight and risk his life everyday, and that there is a lot of pressure on him.

Char really wants to see Garma dead, eh ?

Bright punching Amuro, unlike his dad.
Kai being cooler than normal.
Hayato and Ryu doing stuff too.
Fraw Bow being cool and slightly jelly. Also she will never be able to pilot the gundam (lol)
Char being evil.
Garma possibly going to die next episode? (not a spoiler since I have no clue whether he will or not. The episode preview just makes it seem foreboding. Plus it says "Char's true intentions, Garma's fate"

So who knows. Garma is kinda cool so far though, it will suck if he's gone already.

"Fraw Bow, there's no way you can pilot the Gundam."

I didn't like how overdone Bright's talk with Amuro was, what with the hitting, but after that I could only think, "Amuro, you're so full of crap." He has an inflated sense of self-worth; he's letting his position get to his ego, and the tantrums he's throwing are indeed very immature. But to follow that up with insisting that he's so special... ugh. It's really annoying.

I do think Amuro needed a few more spankings growing up; punching, on the other hand, is too far.

Char has progressed from being unhelpful to deliberately sabotaging operations. He put dirt on that connector, which is why Garma's transmissions didn't come through. Given that, at this point I think Garma's doomed to fail.

Another good episode.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the dining hall scene, with the old guy stealing food from a kid and Amuro leaving his food behind, I thought it did a great job of showing the strange pressure Amuro's under. Even on his rest time he can't just be a normal person.

@SakurasouBusters Idem. If it was sexist, less female would have followed 0079.

Strangely enough, I still can't figure exactly what Tomino wanted to express about women through the first Gundam and Zeta (there might be some elements in ZZ and the finale movie too). You get "War is the business of a man", "A woman's fate is to be used by men", etc, some female characters parked in a certain depiction of the women (Fraw Bow and her later variants) and the opposite with "Only a woman could..." (memory blank) or characters able to stand for themselves (Sayla, Kycilia Zabi, Emma...)

Exactly right. Amuro is stating this as he's a bloody
and knows full well it would take significant training to pilot a Gundam. Not only that he's responding to her right after she stated she would go pilot. If you think Amuro's comments are sexist, the problem is your own.

Good episode. Glad to see Bright alpha punch. Even though Amuro does need a break badly.

So, this is the episode where Bright smacks Amuro upside the head. It's no surprise either, as Amuro wasn't taking war seriously at that point. He seems to be back on the right track now though.

Also, Matilda is certainly attractive, and Amuro definitely likes her.
