Rune Balot is a down-and-out teen prostitute in Mardock City. One day, she's picked up by an ambitious casino manager named Shell who gives her everything she could want. Renewed by a false innocence, a false past, and now the false life Shell has given her, Balot feels grateful. However, she can't help but be curious about why he's done so much for her, so she does some research about his past on a computer. This turns out to be a mistake which will change her life greatly. When Shell finds out what she's done, he attempts to burn her to death by blowing up her car.

Due to the high crime rate in Mardock, a new law called "Scramble 09" has given police carte blanche to take extreme and otherwise illegal measures to revive crime witnesses. With this in mind, they allow a professor to bring Balot back from the brink of death by reassembling her entire body with reinforced synthetic fiber. When she finally wakes up, her confused mental state eventually turns toward revenge as Shell is revealed as her killer.

If there’s one thing that can be said about anime, it’s that it can get quite controversial at times. From the Ecchi genre, to the Horror genre, to the Psychological genre, anime is often presented with scenes of intense language, violence, gore, nudity, sex, and highly questionable themes. Mardock Scramble is one such anime.

The story follows a young Rune Balot, who as a child was raped by her father. Enraged, her brother then proceeds to shoot the father. As her family falls to pieces, Rune grows up as an underage prostitute, and where she is ultimately caught and put in jail. Enter Shell, the read more

As my username might give away, I love cyberpunk, and I always have. Ever since those first few ambient skyline shots from the original Ghost in the Shell, I've been hooked. For me, anime is as much about the characters as the setting itself. Cyberpunk anime always seem to offer backdrops oozing with emotion, from lonely and derelict alleys to streets bustling with life.

Mardock Scramble is by no means perfect, and I loved it just the same. While it does have a few flaws, I hope this review can highlight the strong moments for which I hold it so fondly.

This review is spoiler-free and based on all three parts which combine to form the complete story of Mardock Scramble. I decided to insert review on first part, because that's what people look at first. Too late to regret wasted time by the end of the third or even second installment.

STORY 3/10
Story of Mardock Scramble is a mess to put it lightly. I do enjoy my anime raw and leaving a lot for viewer interpretion. I'm fascinated by works like Ergo Proxy, Haibane Renmei and Serial Experiments Lain. That line is hard to walk: doing it just a bit wrong leads to horrible train read more

Review up to the second movie. Will edit as I watch more.

This trilogy of movies had a rough time while getting green light for production. It was originally planed to be animated by studio GONZO, but after its almost bankruptcy the project was handed over to a new studio on the block, called Go Hands. This studio and the director haven’t made any good anime so far (their roster is full of crappy ecchis) but the final poject can’t possibly be any worse than that piece of shit that is GONZO. So I like this change.

So what is this show about? It is based on read more

Both series deals with a female protagonist who is not your typical or normal girl.

Both anime composes of cyberpunk themes in a futuristic like setting.

Both series contain action, sci-fi, and drama as well as some violence and strange mood throughout some scenes.

They both share gorgeous futuristic societies, themes of rebirth, and lots of nudity. Some character designs are similar, but the main characters are polar opposites, with only looks in common.

A young cyborg girl is given another shot at life by the hands of a compassionate and talented individual (which serves as a kind of mentor or parental figure), and must fight to survive in a rather hostile environment, either due to circumstances ("Gunnm") or a troubled past ("MS"). Expect much action and crude violence, but some touching scenes as well: violence always brings its lot of suffering, which is well represented in both series. While "MS" has become fairly well known recently, "Gunmm" is a classic (especially the manga), a forerunner of the steampunk genre, and it deserves much credit.

Blood, immortality, mystery and action.

Both have atmosphere very similar.

Very similar in style, mood and setting. I find that Psycho pass has more in common with this than ghost in the shell. Psycho-pass focuses more on story while mardock focuses more on style.

Both anime have the protagonists becoming killers by twisted fate, and both are ultimately seeking their meaning in life.
