Synopsis

Haruka Ozawa's sophomore year is getting seriously scary. One of her friends is possessed, another has committed suicide and Haruka could be the next one to flunk the still-breathing test. Her only way out of this potentially lethal dead end? Yakumo Saito, an enigmatic student born with a mysterious red eye that allows him to see and communicate with the dead. But the deceased don't always desist and some killers are more than ready to kill again to keep dead men from telling any more tales. That doesn't stop Haruka's knack for digging up buried secrets, and there's even more evidence of bodies being exhumed by both Yakumo's police contact and an investigative journalist with a newly made corpse in her closet! Can this pair of anything but normal paranormal detectives solve the ultimate dead case files or will they end up in cold storage themselves?

This show is about a high school student named Yakumo who has the ability to see spirits with his left red eye and sometimes communicate with them(not a super original premise, but highly entertaining nontheless). He spends his spare time tricking kids out of their money with fake card tricks, or just sleeping about. But, once in a while, he'll take a spirit associated police case that has piqued his interest. But with his troubled family past and issues with humanity, will Yakumo ever be able to live a normal life?

Shinrei Tantei Yakumo revolves around a strange college student with a cursed red left eye. Through his eye, Yakumo is able to see and communicate with spirits of the dead, helping them move on from their earthly dwelling.

The events unfold in an episodic format familiar to detective series fans, giving STY the double effect of being easy to follow while having a tendency to be repetitive. Personally, though, I liked the format. Despite the mini-cases, the plot still followed the main conflict, which is big and complex and absolutely mind-boggling. Technically, the art is so-so, but the sound is fantastic. BGM is perfectly timed read more

Shinrei Tantei Yakumo/ Psychic Detective Yakumo= 9.5/10

Story: The story revolves around Yakumo, a university student who can see the spirits of the dead with his left red eye. Haruka Ozawa appraches Yakumo regarding a case in which spirits are involved. From then Haruka, Yakumo and a number of interesting characters are thrust into spiral of mysteries with one sinister source.
I heavily enjoyed the story, it was neither too simple nor too complex and each episode had an impact on the next so it pretty much kept you watching till the end. The suspense is strong and the revelations are wow!

Characters: I loved all the characters read more

'Shinrei Tantei Yakumo' ('Psychic Detective Yakumo') is about Yakumo, an university student and private detective, who has a red left eye that lets him see ghosts and spirits.

The premise and atmosphere of this show is very similar to 'Ghost Hunt', just that the good guys have no offensive super powers, and the ghosts and spirits are directly harmless. The basic format of the show begins with Haruka asking Yakumo to investigate on a case, he takes a look at the scene, ask for help from allies (police detectives, journalist, priest etc), and puts the spirits at ease after a showdown. At the same time, there read more

Yakumo is, in essence, a more rushed and poorly written version of Ghost Hunt. The two leads and their relationship is the same in both, though in Ghost Hunt the heroine's thoughts are expressed internally frequently, which makes her have far more depth and spunk than the hollow shell of a character that is Haruka. And the episodic stories themselves are far more involving and, at times, creepy than the average predictably on show in the first few Yakumo episodes.
Both of these happen to have a dark side to the story line, both deal with the supernatural and have a majorly gothic style to the drawings.
Un-Go & Shinrei Tantei Yakumo: both are mystery genre with a good capable detective as main character that has to solve cases; as well a supernatural factor grows bigger in both by every episode.

If you liked one of them you might probably enjoy the other too!
Hyouka and Shinrei Tantei Yakumo do share some similar points, but are also at the same time quite different.
• both stories mainly deal with mystery cases and how to solve them
• this brings authomatically to have a very brilliant main character, in both series, who is able to solve them
• both are setted into a school background and both have the "club" theme as well
• still, both have a noticeable dose of weirdness: STY has of course a strong supernatural genre, and Hyouka has somewhat special scenes involving unknown powers (the girl's curiousity-catchphrase has it easy when wants to pursuade the main chara in changing his decisions)

Now instead to the different part:
• substantially Yakumo has a heavy dark atmosphere; while Hyouka is quite much slice of life and doesn't exclude comic scenes, which overall gives it definitely a happier atmosphere.
This might look "just one thing" but it really does make the difference.

Anyway i thought to recommend both, because even if they can give different "vibes" since they are totally setted with different atmospheres, they still recall one another.
You might like Yakumo if you liked Hyouka, and viceversa.
Both have a protagonist with a power in his eyes. Every episode the protagonist deals with supernatural things. The voice actors are the same for the main girl and the main boy in both animes.
Dark, gothic tales dealing with people who can see things they are not, or should not be able to see. There is a mystery that lies under the whole thing, that bends and brings one into the story.
