Conception

On his high school graduation day, Itsuki's cousin, Mahiru, tells him that she's pregnant. Just then, a gate of light emerges and transports the two into the world of Granvania. In this land, "Impurities" have been causing a disturbance to the Stars, ultimately plunging Granvania into chaos and disorder. And Itsuki, now revealed to be one who is fated to meet with the "Star Maidens," is seen as Granvania's last hope and was thus given the task to produce "Star Children" and combat the "impurities." And unless the task is complete, Itsuki may never be able to return home.

This show is overhated, this is no more degenerate than something like Shield hero. Go into looking for some laughs and it is worthwhille.
The plot is dumb for the most part but it makes up for it with the pacing. The last episode is the only boring one. Most of the characters are entertaining and there are none that are awful, Animation is fine, except for some of the fights but they are done quickly.

Some jokes are quite funny, other times the show is so bad that it's hilarious. Embrace the cringe the way Eminence in shadow does.

Mixed Feelings

Not A Show For The Faint Of Heart


This show is one that makes you question why it even exists and why the hell you are watching it at all. This show is very much an obvious parody of harem anime. With its rushed nature, absurd plots, and cringe everything. This show makes your stomach turn. That being said it is for sure not meant to be taken seriously. Many jokes did land with me near the end of the show but I will admit that subjecting myself to this was one of the worst things I have ever done. I understand it's ... existence. I need time to accept this abhorrence.

You know something, folks? I love doing this like I do with my job in real life, that I've been with for around six years, as of this day. With anime, I've been with it since I was a wee lad in the 90s. I dropped out of anime a couple of times down the road, but I always love it for the storytelling, the characters, the art style, and for how the voice acting deliver. Just as long as it appeals to me. But sometimes, I'll also watch anime that is just terrible in many ways. Because there ... are so many good ones, there will also be a handful of bad ones. This anime, Conception, that is based off a video game series, is one of the bad ones. What can I say? Gotta balance out the scale every once in a while, right?
Alright, so we're gonna tackle the story as it's about two high school characters who are graduating named Itsuki Yuge, voiced by Yuki Ono, and his childhood friend/cousin Mahiru Konatsuki, voiced by Emiri Kato. Out of nowhere without much explanation, Miharu is pregnant. Yes, I am saying it right. Just follow along. Itsuki and Mahiru were transported into a different world called Granvania to encounter something called an Impurity. Impurities are the monsters who are causing chaos within the world of Granvania. There is more to them, but that is explained in the final episode. Out of nowhere, Mahiru gave birth to a child-like creation called a Star Child, which was more than enough to kill the Impurity who was about to kill Itsuki and Mahiru. They meet up with the king named Shangri-la, who explains to Itsuki that he is the chosen hero who would reproduce various Star Children to the twelve chosen Maidens to fight off the Impurities. Oh, and Mahiru is actually a chosen Maiden of Virgo, hence why she was pregnant and gave birth to a Star Child magically, alah, the Virgin of Mary somehow. Yeah, that's kind of a plot hole to me. In order for Itsuki and Mahiru to get back to their world, Itsuki would have to have the Maidens give birth to Star Children and seal off the twelve Impurity Lords within this labyrinth. Of course, there is more to the plot that was explained in the final four episodes.
I will go ahead and get these remaining Maidens out of the way before we move on. Arie is the Maiden of Aries, voiced by Aya Endo, and a kindhearted nun Who studies and teaches young children at the church she resides in. Femiruna is the Maiden of Leo, voiced by Saki Fujita, and a the only daughter of a certain millionaire. Unfortunately, we do not meet this millionaire. Collette is the Maiden of Aquarius, voiced by Asami Shimoda, who runs a bakery that started with her grandfather. Yuzuha is the Maiden of Pisces, voiced by Yukiyo Fujii, who works as an artist and has a shortened life-span due to an illness. Hence why she sleeps most of the time while sleeping in a coffin. She even carries her own coffin when she was with Itsuki. Ruka is the Maiden of Cancer, voiced by Makiko Ohmoto, who has a very perceptive insight which allows her to see into the hearts of the people around her as well as read their minds except for Itsuki. Reone is the Maiden of Scorpio, voiced by Yuriko Yamaguchi, who is a physician of Granvania, as well as taking care of the Maidens' health. Farun is the Maiden of Capricorn, voiced by Kazusa Aranami, is a dancer and a waitress of this tavern. Tarua is the maiden of Taurus, voiced by Riho Sugiyama, is a postman in-training who always gives her best at everything. She loves to run all over town as she delivers mail all over Granvania. Lilith/Lillie are the Miadens of Gemini, both voiced by Kana Asumi, who shares a body with one another and would switch different personalities if hit on the head. Lilith has a reserved personality while Lillie is mischievous and demanding. They work as a fortune teller. Mirei is the Maiden of Libra, voiced by Sanae Kobayashi, who is the calm and logical one of the Maidens. Mirei's main hobby is studying magic for many years and views love as a foolish concept. And finally, Sue is the Maiden of Sagittarius, voiced by Eri Kitamura, who loves taking care of animals and would bring them all over town without asking for much permission. She owns a farm that her family owned before they were killed by the Impurities. Sue dreams of becoming a veterinarian.
Yeah, that was a mouthful since you are reading eleven Maidens by name and their character traits. I'm certain the game fleshes them out more. Because they aren't fleshed out much throughout the anime except for what they do and some of their backstory. Not to mention they are unfortunately bland. Despite how their character designs look and how unique they can be, the script doesn't help them much since the anime is all about them birthing Star Children via Itsuki interacting with them through a date before taking them bed. I wish I was kidding, but that is the plot of the show. Of course, the Maidens aren't the only characters of the show. You also have this little red panda, who is like the show's mascot, named Mana, voiced by Yurin. Mana has a backstory of her own (yes, that is a female character which I'd learned nearing the end of the anime) yet that was explained down the road of the show. You also have Narcisstes, voiced by Daisuke Hirakawa, who is the scholar in service of the Kingdom of Granvania. Alfie, voiced by Ai Kakuma, who is in charge of training the Star Children. There is more about Alfie's character that has been explained nearing the end of the anime along with the story being more complicated.
Actually, this is one of the biggest flaws the anime shows and it has a large roster with very little character interaction and development as Itsuki and Mana are on screen eighty percent of the time. Speaking of Mana, her behavior is like how Mineta from My Hero Academia and Happosai from Ranma 1/2 (as I am currently watching it on a weekly basis and we're now having the old man make his debut) behave. You'd be surprised that whenever Mana comes in to make a terrible joke, I could think of so many things to do with her. From what a red panda tastes like to performing taxidermy. In addition, Mana always shoves herself into Itsuki until a certain point late into the anime. I will not give much details about that event, but let's say that they became "closer." Then again, as much as Itsuki gets annoyed with Mana, she would go so much as how he would make the Maidens happy until they birth Star Children. As far as the Maidens, the king and the rest of the characters go, they are just bland. The Maidens do get an episode of their own as I already explained that they share their lives as they date before they go to this ritual to produce Star Children. The story goes all over the place because they also have specific events such as a the usual beach episode, this episode where it's kinda like the Bachelor, a festival kind of episode, and even a Christmas episode before the climax of the show.
The location has always stuck with Granvania when you also have a labyrinth where the Impurities reside, yet it is barely in the show as much as the Impurities. Speaking of, they are barely in the show as much as the side characters are, too. Nearly non-existent, too. Especially when the action sequences were there with the Impurities, and none of them were engaging. It becomes more engaging when we reach the final episode, yet it felt like a last minute ditch effort for how it wanted to end. With all that said, I would assume that the video game does it better since it's both a dungeon crawler and a dating simulator JRPG. Kinda sounds like the Persona series. Curious to ask, if you've played the game since I only saw bits of gameplay, but would that be true to what I would assume? You are free to share details about the game series since the show is bare-boned. That could go the same for the animation. The animation, unfortunately, is as bland as how the characters are with how they are set up. It's also carried by the humor, and not all of them landed for me. I did get a couple of laughs out of this. However, most of the humor is bad. And as far as the voice acting goes, they do good, yet the script doesn't do them any favor for how the characters are written. There is an English version of this, except I don't have much motivation because most of the time, I would lose brain cells for how the anime is played. This is one-and-done for me.
Was this anime one of the most hated as several YouTubers claim Conception to be? Yes, as I understood why that would be the case. Were others right that this was garbage? Certainly. To me, this might have potential yet it seems better if it stayed as a video game series. As an anime, though? Not so much. To be fair, there have been plenty of times when anime that is an adaptation of video games such as Persona, Xenosaga, Devil May Cry, and several others that can be mainly average to below to the bottom of the barrel. This show makes it to that bottom, unfortunately. It was just boring, overall. I will be giving Conception two Mana doing it dirty with that random blonde haired character out of ten. 2/10. Oh, yeah, this guy also exists in the anime, but I am just done with this. Bye.
