Yeah, it's a fun fever dream of a manga. I liked the early vigilante stories, the martial arts stuff in the middle, and the supernatural dystopian stuff at the end, but each for entirely different reasons. It was a pretty charming manga with some really neat characters, and I'm also surprised that it never got any anime material. At least Black Angels has been getting some love in Japan lately with a bunch of collaborations and small events.

Not really related, but the third manga series of the Tough Franchise "Tough: The Man Who Inherits the Dragon" ended last month with a total of 420 chapters, it ends in a way that makes it very easy to assume we will be getting a 4th mainline Tough manga series later down the line. The English scanlation of Tough part 3 still stops at chapter 203. Saruwatari isn't taking a break though, and has already begun a new Tough spinoff mini-series starring Seiko which is releasing weekly, with a much more mundane story focused on drama rather than martial arts, and taking place at some point during the events of the third series. It seems like it will be a 1-volume series, and 2 chapters have already been released (untranslated for now).

also as a bonus, something Hiramatsu did for a Kinnikuman event:

That actually sounds way more interesting than I expected. I haven’t seen Trigun yet, but the way you describe the reboot handling—like mixing new stuff while staying true to the characters’ core vibes—makes it feel way more intentional than most reimaginings. The fact that it’s raising the bar so early in just three episodes says a lot.

It’s also cool they’re reworking the Gung-Ho Guns instead of just copy-pasting them. And yeah, I’ve seen people talk about the Vash vs. Wolfwood dynamic being one of the strongest parts of the show, so glad to hear that still lands. Sucks that Milly isn’t there, but I get that too—sometimes adding one more character can totally throw off the tone. Fingers crossed she fits into Stargaze if they bring her back the right way.

Saw on your twitter that you finished Black Angels, it's been one of my favorites of those weird semi-obscure jump titles, and I always thought you'd get to that one eventually. Black Angels was the beginning of a multi-decade manga franchise by it's creator Shinji Hiramatsu, but none of the later Black Angels manga series are translated (besides the first 40 or so chapters of Murder License Kiba, a Hiramatsu manga that stared off as it's own thing but became connected to Black Angels later on), and neither are his pre-Black Angels works. In fact, Black Angels is still ongoing, as Hiramatsu is publishing a monthly Black Angels alternate-universe spinoff called Black Angels Oedo, and there is also a black Black Angels webtoon reboot by a different author and artist which features an original story. It started earlier this year and is apparently still ongoing.

Besides manga, Hiramatsu has been extremely active on twitter (https://x.com/shinzihiramatsu) and has put out numerous art pieces. Some of these have been of real people in his artstyle, others depict characters from the Black Angels franchise as well as his past manga, several are crossovers between his works and other franchises like TOUGH, and many have been collaborations with the government or businesses, such as this anti-bike theft PSA starring Yukito.

I see you got around to Black Angels, you're already past what i consider to be the good portion of the story but i still think its a interesting read nonetheless. Definitely a odd manga for shonen jump looking back since it predates a lot of the golden age jump manga and is so such a dark and somewhat disturbing manga. Matsuda is my favorite character

Thanks for accepting the FR! Kinkotsuman's humor really landed with me, specially at the middle to the end of the original anime series, haha. Although I've heard that he is not that prevalent in the manga.

Love your manly characters tier list as well lol. I'm really into gekiga and stuff nowadays but I'm a manly battle Shonen lover at my core! Why is Toguro so low though? :O

Keep rocking!!

You should check-out the rest of Ishikawa's work. Sure, Getter Robo Saga is amazing, but Eurasia 1274 and Makai Tenshou are cool AF as well. I'm fully convinced that Ishikawa was a genius.
Also, the OVA series of Miroku is something too interesting not to give it a chance.

You have a great channel. Thanks to your content I met some of my favourite manga.
Muchas gracias.
