The Berserk manga is great but the Berserk 1997 anime is overrated in my opinion. For one, the Golden Age arc is really mediocre and boring imo, all the other arcs are more interesting as they have more fantasy world-building and demons and stuff, which is what I like the most about Berserk, and the GA arc was lacking that and instead had mostly regular medieval fights and politics which aren't at all interesting to me. Also, the anime changed a lot of things from the manga like Puck's whole existence as well as the portal to the astral world being opened up at volume 3, which is the most hype thing that happens up until the eclipse. They did this to catch the anime-only's off-guard with the supernatural elements but, again, that's all I care about, and even then that doesn't really work when we get a glimpse into Nosferatu Zodd. The eclipse is great but it's just the last 2 episodes. Everything before that is pretty forgettable. The anime starts out with a very confusing first episode and ends in a Gainax-esque cliffhanger. Not to mention, the animation is stilted and poorly aged, panels from the manga were way overused as stills whenever the animators couldn't be bothered to actually animate the fight and the music was also overused, and I don't even wanna talk about the godawful op, all of this together made it really cheesey, which is the last thing you want from a horror-drama-fantasy story. But the thing that put me off the most, just like with all shows I rate anything below a 10, was the pacing. It's what you would expect from an anime from the ninties. A sequence like Guts doing a monotonous action like swinging his sword is shown in like two or three pannels in the manga that take less than a second to look at, and are stretched out into minutes in the anime. Characters can look at eachother for minutes at a time with minimal animation or dialoge, which is only implied in the manga through a couple of pannels. Although 9-10 volumes in 26 episodes is technically good pacing, the removed a lot of sequences and stretched others out in a way that just made if feel very slow. Some episodes almost put me to sleep. I gotta re-iterate, the eclipse was completely mind-blowing, but is not enough to make the whole anime worth it.
