Comments on Rating System
I'm in the process of thinking more critically about the ratings I give, so I'm not sure if all the shows I've rated really deserve the scores they have been given. I think I often gave 9s and 10s to shows that deserve 8s. This is not to say they aren't that good, I'm still saying they are excellent, which is high praise. I think I should be giving out more 6-8s. 6 is still a good score and 7 is better than good. I'm not sure if I like the word 'great' for 7, but it's somewhere between good and excellent, so still praiseworthy. (28/3/21)
I think I can pinpoint the shift in how I rate anime to Akudama Drive and Appare Ranman. (5/4/21)
I think the hardest part for me rating things well is not being too strongly swayed by my enjoyment of an anime. It's hard to get a show a lower score than what reflects how much I enjoyed it, even if that's what it deserves, or a show that was good, but I didn't enjoy a 6. Now that I've realised this I think I'll be able to score better. This shift can be marked from With a Dog AND a Cat, Every Day is Fun. With this scoring mentality, 9s and 10s should be very scarce indeed. (31/1/22)
After watching Kaguya season 3 I think the true mark of a 10 is an anime I don't hesitate to give a 10. In light of that I made a number of modifications mostly moving 10s to 9s. The modifications have been tagged with Mod and Mod2. These shows that were modified I really ought to rewatch: Code Geass, Code Geass R2, Death Note, Madoka, Re:Zero S2pt1. And that's a lot of 9s... I'm sure not all of them deserve a 9. (23/7/22)
Shorts are difficult to score. I think it's much easier to make a good short than it is to make a good movie or good TV show, because there's a lot less content. Something that would be boring or whose flaws would rear their head in a movie doesn't overstay its welcome in a short, leaving before one stops appreciating it. This means it feels like their scores are somewhat inflated... The shorter the media, the less there is to, and therefore the harder it is to, mess up. (10/6/23)
