Avex Pictures opened an official website for a new anime movie adaptation for Riyoko Ikeda's Versailles no Bara (The Rose of Versailles) manga on Wednesday, revealing a teaser visual (pictured) and an announcement promo. The anime movie is commemorating the manga serialization's 50th anniversary.

The historical drama manga was serialized in Weekly Margaret from 1972–1973 and compiled into ten volumes from 1972 to 1974. Shueisha later reprinted it in 10 bunkoban volumes from 1977 to 1978. Ikeda serialized a four-volume side story between April 2013 and February 2018. Versailles no Bara sold a cumulative 20 million copies of its volumes.

Tokyo Movie Shinsha produced a 40-episode television anime that aired from Fall 1979 to Summer 1980. The Seimei Aru Kagiri Aishite (I'll Love You As Long As I Live) compilation movie premiered in May 1990.

Udon Entertainment licensed the manga in English in July 2015 and published it in five omnibus volumes from February 2020 and April 2021. Right Stuf licensed the television anime under its Nozomi Entertainment label in September 2012 and released it on two DVD volumes in May and July the following year. Discotek Media reacquired the anime and released it on two Blu-ray volumes in April and June last year.

Synopsis
Hoping to unite their countries with an alliance, The Empress of Austria arranges her daughter, the delightful yet spoiled Marie Antoinette, to marry the crown prince of France, Louis XVI. Upon arriving in Versailles, the Austrian princess meets Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, Captain of the Royal Guards—a seemingly dashing young man—but to Antoinette's astonishment, he is in fact a woman!

The youngest daughter of a noble family with a prominent lack of a male heir, Oscar was raised as a boy to continue the family's military legacy. Suffocated by the rigid rules associated with her new position and longing for companionship, Antoinette immediately takes a liking to this intriguing young woman, and wastes no time befriending her. However, as the childish new queen foolishly abuses her power, Oscar is conflicted between maintaining her loyalty to the royal family and addressing the growing concern of poverty among the common people.

Recalling the events of the French Revolution, Versailles no Bara depicts the struggles of two women unjustly burdened by family expectations. Yet, despite being forced to deny their identities at the expense of personal happiness, they march on to become key players in the annals of history. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

After both Evagelion and Gundam referencing Utena this is a logical next step. Sure Utena's referencing of Rose of Versailles is more a red herring kind of thing, but Ikuhara was able to do that because Versailles is so entrenched in Japanese popular culture. Hope this new film has something new to say as the story is well known and held in high regard as is, a bland repackaging just to cash in on name recognition is not missed.

Respect for the classics! We're waiting.

Ik its a classic but i think it didn't age well.

At least for me, that thing was a bit boring (even i like the romance happening in old timelines)

I was attacked by a gay guy for saying that the target audience for the show was primarily straight girls, not gay guys.

Wow, I'm very very sorry that happened to you. I really had no idea there were people like that who watched these series.

I just watched the 1979 version and was sad when I found out the 2007 version was cancelled. Was also sad that it was the 50th anniversary already with nothing announced, so this is a huge surprise and I'm really happy! Looking forward to seeing how this looks done nowadays!

I'm definitely aware of this manga but I've never read it or watched the anime. I'm hearing some people saying it's a lesbian story while others say it's a transgender story so what kinda story is it actually?

It's neither, it's the story of Marie Antoinette's fictional bodyguard Oscar who is a woman raised as a man. The story follows Oscar and Marie Antoinette's lives as they evolve, Marie Antoinette's queendom and reputation crumbling and her romance with Fersen and Oscar's interaction with revolutionaries, her romances, career, and character development. The story does have some lesbianic stuff in it though, like pretty much every girl having a crush on Oscar, she kisses a woman at one point, and even a prominent side character who has a crush on her- but otherwise usually these things are played for jokes or to progress Oscar's character- idk how to put this it's really specific- in any case though they're a mostly minor aspect of the series and all the main romances are between men and women

And in regards to the trangenderism/ spoilers

The only way I see this movie working if it's an adaptation of this:
https://myanimelist.net/manga/80223/Versailles_no_Bara__Episode-hen

Which feels a bit weird for a 50th anniversary but it the only thing i see that could fit the movie format/runtime.

I thought the same thing.

I saw attempts to prove that Tooru's friends were in love with her, but it didn't seem to be that massive. And what YoI you mentoned?

I make sure to never look up anything related to the series so that doesn't affect me, it will only effect me if the weirdos get through my twitter banned word filters. Still though, I hope not. Avex pictures has a weird repetoire but I'm not against them by the looks of it. Although their works do seem semi popular. Weirdly enough though I don't see many annoying/"political" Osomatsu, Fruits Basket, or YoI fans

Spanku said in July that Mappa was doing a remake of a big shoujo project.

Huh, I can already see how the admins of the fandom wiki will have to roll back the increased vandalism of trying to write that Oscar is a trans male.

Pointless. The 1979 adaptation is already amazing and adapted the manga fully. Doubt this remake can be better, especially since it's only a movie.

I was surprised because I didn't expect it to be re-animated. The pictures are drawn in a very modern style.

It looks strange, but perhaps it will look less strange when you actually see it moving in animation.
