It's been a long time since IBO. Not really a fan of the design for the character but I guess I will take it. Turns out the MC really is the female this time around. Let's see how that goes.

Another reason why Gundam is barely a thing in the west is Bandai is one of the most incompetent companies imaginable when it comes to gaming. They will release games and TCGs only to slit the the throat and move on to the next. This is the same company that killed the Naruto TCG when Naruto was at its peak popularity

Not sure about TCGs. The two reasons I can think of are:
1) Wing and SEED are the first Gundam anime introduced in the West, which causes the misconception that Gundam is about mecha blowing shit up rainbow style instead of a war story. Things will be different if UC Gundam or the 1990s AU (other than Wing) are first introduced in the West.
2) Most Bandai games, including some Gundam games, are PlayStation exclusive instead of available for both PlayStation and X Box.

It is not the sole reason, but Bandai's failure in the TCG market burned a lot of bridges between them and distributors + store owners. Till this day, many people in the west have a strong grudge against bandai and refuse to host their products. In english TCG communities, they are universally regarded as the worst gaming company alive. If Bandai didn't fail in the TCG community, Gundam communities would probably thrive as much as yugioh communities

Will probably get more popupar than ibo in japan due to a female lead, but will probably be ignored in the west. People underestimate how toxic the gundam fanbase can get. Anitubers like gigguk also dont help since they are extremely toxic to anything that isnt like the top 1% of anime.

Rather the opposite. I already see resources like ANN doing mental gymnastics to find feminism here. And that's not even touching on possible fanservice.

Well, actually I wouldn't really want that, given that an all-female work in a franchise known for its nakama-power can get too much of a misguided attitude. Especially since Okada-san decided to add polyamory and gay marriage to Gundam.[/

can you tell which series gundam that added gay marriage and polymory ? im quite curis about this.

Iron-blooded orphans. At the final event, the director and writer confirmed same-sex marriage for one pair of characters and called the other pair "canonical if not for the story." And yes, the MC in canon relationships with both of his love interests.

I do not know the general opinion of the Japanese about this, but the comments on that news were not positive.

i look it up. it make sense why it not positive because the two women come across as sister rather than lovers in the show in term of the develop. an their established relation come across as polygamy rather polyamorous relationship. it felt force since they didn't see in that away.

Big western fandoms in general are toxic as hell since it is largely dictated by big shonens. But for mecha, 86 has sort of created a new mecha anime fandom whose ego may one day rival that of eva and gundam. Without a doubt 86 has gotten a lot of attention, and comparisons will be made to eva and gundam. Eva is elistist as hell. In gundam fandom, seed & destiny also caused divides since its extreme popularity lead to hate trains from new 00 or ibo fans or old uc and wing fans. Only chill mecha fandom i have seen is date a live and that is largely due to how it tends to deviate itself so heavily from traditional mechas.

Looks good, but if Noboru Kimura's writing this then it's already DOA.

And 86 fanboys have the habit of calling other people who criticizing their show an idiot, brainless, have short amount of attention span, and etc.

Like someone mentioned on this thread earlier, it's not that deep. I'd say that both the people who hate it for no reason and the fanboy who defends it by insulting other people are equally childish and idiotic

I admit I was childish in my early replies, but to my defense the guy I was replying to started shittalking randomly, and not for the first time, with the same nonsense claims. So yeah, my bad, but you can't be surprised that shit like that's gonna bait the fans. Also that people will come to this thread who are both Gundam and 86 fans.

Also if you read his replies that was anything but legit criticism. And while 86 doesn't have the political depth of Gundam it does have a very real and rare depth in the humanities, a lot of people just ignore that cause it's not what they care about.

Eh, it's mostly the so called mecha fans from the West who only seen at most 10 mecha (and that's being generous) making unnecessary comparisons and acting like they know shit.

To be fair one doesn't need to know the whole lexicon of mechas to literally just compare 2 IPs they do watch, especially when the differences between the 2 are so obvious. Like one is always focused around all sides of the conflict and an anti-war message while the other is a smaller scale personal character drama. I don't see how one needs to be a mecha expert to point out that simple as fuck key difference to the salt mines labeling the one they dislike as an inferior ripoff.
Oh you're not wrong.

I guess as I've gotten older and have had a better appreciation for mecha, it has become pointless to compare them. I look at them as their own thing, but that's just me...

When will we get a good mature mecha shows with fucking child protagonists?? I need the Thunderbolt, 08th MS Team, Stardust Memory kinda stuff. Am I the only one down for this shit??!!

You consider watching Break Blade! :)
It is a war story. The protagonist is an adult male~

You can also consider Macross. The protagonist is in his later teen years. The characters are really good there~

There are also others like Promare~
The protagonist is an adult but he is quite immature~

EDIT: Does Active Raid counts?

It was today that I learned that the mecha fandom is toxic as hell....I mean I already knew this based off of how the Muv-Luv community has been treating Attack on Titan fans but Jesus Christ man some of you in this thread sound so pretentious, salty and entitled LMAO, it's really not that deep

I will say one thing though, apart from Eva and now 86, the mecha genre has factually been virtually non-existent in terms of discussion from the broader/general animanga community, the last time I even remember seeing mecha shows being talked about on a wide scale outside of the mecha community was when DITF was airing (And this was mostly because of Zero-Two and the hilariously bad second half lol), but that in itself was like over 3 years ago now

If it's not Evangelion, Gurren Lagann or Code Geass then it's not worth talking about according them...
It's like who the fuck made you the official judges of what's watchable and what's not.

Saw a huge debate here on Gundam, Macross and 86. No idea how the debate has gone~

I am a Gundam fan and a Macross fan.

Gundam, Macross and 86 are 3 completely different fiction.

Here are the differences:

Gundam is a war story. A lot of people misunderstood the definition of Gundam because of the mainstream Wing, SEED and 00. These 3 Gundam anime has one thing in common. Overpowered Gundams destroying everything, which causes many people to think that Gundam is about mecha blowing shits up rainbow style. In reality, it is far from the truth. Gundam is a war story that has the message "War is hell", anyone who watched the whole universal century, including myself. Even some alternate universes such as Mobile Fighter: G Gundam also asks this question ''Is a tournament the best method to replace wars and decide world superpowers?'. I highly recommend people to watch UC Gundam. There are also some alternate universe that are really good, such as After War Gundam X, which is about post-war. After War Gundam X is the most underrated Gundam, it just came out at the wrong timing and hence its low ratings and got cut at episode 39. :(

Macross is more focused on humanity living together with aliens (Zentradi) and romance. Macross has great romance and it also has awesome mecha design. I like the designs of Valkyries! :)
The original Macross is really good which its characters, the characters are really likeable.
Well, I dislike Macross Delta~

For 86, in terms of plot and characters, it is definitely inferior to both Gundam and Macross but still decent, like a 6.5/10 to 7/10. It is more focuses on Lena and Shin.

I heard someone mentioned Gigguk. I don't really care about anime YouTubers because taste differs. It is normal to enjoy an unpopular fiction and not enjoy a popular anime. I enjoyed Code Geass: Akito The Exile and I do not enjoy Code Geass: Lelouch Of The Rebellion.

All signs seem to be pointing this toward being an AU Gundam so it's easily accessible for newcomers. I enjoyed 00 and IBO so I'll keep an eye out for this.

They seem to be making a big deal about this being the first female protagonist for a main Gundam TV show, so I hope it leads to some interesting writing instead of derivates that come with things like this.

They've already promoted the latest game with a special focus on the "all-female team" concept, so it looks like someone at Sunrise has decided that Gundam's gender equality theme is going to be a very trendy thing. It's unlikely to get to woke proportions, but no one expected that we'd get a female Trump and massive refugee metaphors from Watanabe's new anime either.
