Even more reason not to look at the rankings - the light novel list is made up of 4 different rankings (although only 3 were relevant to this week), which MAL selects items from to put together and then rank.

Incidentally the 4 thresholds this week were:
top 50 bunko: 5261
top 20 light novels: 5469 (and thus not relevant this time as everything on here is also in either bunko or book rankings)
top 50 book: 4917
top 20 book - literature subcategory: 3089

This fourth list almost always has the lowest ranking requirement, meaning that those things that are eligible for it tend to stay on the rankings longer than the majority of things which aren't. And also means that there's no way of knowing how many things that would be selected for inclusion in MAL's lists sold less than the ranking requirement but more than the requirement for this fourth list.

Of course, none of this detracts from the sales figures, which at the end of the day are the important thing, but it does mean that the ranks need to be taken with even more of a pinch of salt than they would otherwise.

The way MAL presents the data also leads to periodic confusion. "Why is Biblia not #1 on the half-yearly/yearly light novel volume list?". Things like this would be made more clearer if MAL presented the data according to how it is released by Oricon Youtaiju. For those who don't know the answer to the question I wrote there, Biblia is bunko but not a light novel.

I also remember one time someone was questioning why the most recent volume of a release failed to chart in the MAL list because based on the past volume sales, it would've easily beaten the MAL threshold. The answer to that is that it would not have made the much higher bunko threshold (since it is bunko), which is why the release is missing from the list despite most certainly having sold enough to beat the MAL threshold.

I think of the ranking number as a formality. It is only there to determine what volume sales will be included in the list, so I just find it baffling how some people on MAL seems to take pride in their favourite series being in the Top 10 or whatever, when the sales are the most important anyway. Something can rank in the top 10, but in reality it sold terrible. See the current BD list where Etotama is ranked 6th in MAL terms, but sold pretty terrible at 586. Do people really think that is amazing since it is in the Top 10 afterall?

Just seeing their favorite title at the top is good enough. How much it sells is really what matters, but some people care more for the rankings than sales. Especially if their favorite title isn't popular or simple doesn't normally do well to rank high, so you kinda can't blame them for being happy to see their favorite series at the top even if the figures are appalling.

It's usually in the top 10 or a little below, right? It ranked 22 this week. So that's kinda odd. I don't know if it's still in a safe place or not?

Ranking don't mean anything, it's the figures that are important.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't understand how they worked at first, but I think I get it now

It was in the Top 10 because it sold a lot of copies in one week. Anyways the rankings aren't important because what actually matters here are the total number of volumes sold.

 *26,532 *,721,444 Nanatsu no Taizai Vol.14

The ones on the left are copies sold in a week while the underlined ones are the total copies of volume sold since it was released (April 17 I think). So yea NNT sold 720k copies in a month which is very good.

Oh, I see now. Thanks for the clarification

That's my question. I don't understand know how these weekly rankings work... so I don't know if NnT is still in a safe place or not... I just hope it releases more volumes. That will help it out, if it's in a pickle.

Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry volume 6 sold 13820 in 10 days.
Magdala de Nemure 6 sold 14134 in 5 days.

As I've already mentioned, though, that's irrelevant as the two aren't in competition coming not only from different labels but different publishing companies.

I know they are from different publishers. My point was exactly about sales. I just pointed the first example from the list.

It's a work of quite a famous writer with better sales than a lot of LNs, adapted recently, so I wondered why the publisher still don't want to make an anime from it?

If you look at the anime adaptations of Dengeki Bunko light novels, though, everything has been an adaptation of a series that sold considerably more than Magdala does since C3 in 2011.

If you look at the lower sellers getting anime they're mostly from GA Bunko and Gagaga Bunko, plus a smattering from labels that only do anime adaptations infrequently and usually don't even have any big sellers in the first place.
