On March 5, 2009, the New York Times began publishing for the first time, a Manga Best Seller List. In recognition of the fact that "comics have finally joined the mainstream", the New York Times has added three new graphic books best seller lists to their well-known and well-respected weekly lineup of best seller lists. This list comes out every Friday, and it reflects the sales for the week ending the previous Saturday. One of the unique aspects of this new list is that it includes sales not just at large and independent retailer of a variety of books, but also specialty shops and many other outlets, both online and brick-and-mortar. A detailed description of how where the data was obtained can be found below the actual list.

Graphic Books Best Seller List (Manga)

10 NARUTO, Vol. 39, by Masashi Kishimoto. (VIZ Media, $7.95.)

Rankings reflect sales of graphic novels, for the week ending April 4, at many thousands of venues where a wide range of books are sold nationwide. These include hundreds of independent book retailers (statistically weighted to represent all such outlets); national, regional and local chains; online and multimedia entertainment retailers; university, gift, supermarket, discount department stores and newsstands. In addition, these rankings also include unit sales reported by retailers nationwide that specialize in graphic novels and comic books.

Naruto is #1 for being most failed manga of all.

Fruits Basket is the best.

I'm glad for Holic and Negima though.

Naruto pretty much owned that ranking thing. Hope better stuff is in the next ranking.

Meh, as much as it's to be expected way too much Naruto..
I'm surprised to see that something like Death Note isn't on the list since that's really popular in the US I think?
Glad xxxholic is up there though.

There's so much Naruto on here due in large part, I wager, to Viz's printing scheduling - releasing four volumes at a time in order to catch up to the Japanese releases. Couple that with Naruto's popularity, and thats not unsurprising nor unreasonable an event.

This list will be interesting to see when there aren't a zillion new Naruto volumes being released at once.

Good to see Fruits Basket and xxxHolic doing well though!

If someone organized a (large) group of people to purchase a specific book during a specific week, it would be interesting to see what sort of effect that would have on the rankings.

I agree. If one could get enough cooperation they could really shift the market in their favor. That would be pretty cool.

naruto should be banned from that list.

I'd rather see whats at the bottom of the list, I bet most of the actual good stuff lies there =/

Apr 12, 2009 6:20 PM by Kantarou

I'm kinda surprised Bleach isn't on that list :P

But srsly, WTF NARUTO. Dx

My country saddens me D:
