Right Stuf Acquires Princess Knight Anime
According to their press release, Right Stuf has acquired the Princess Knight anime. It will be released under the Nozomi Entertainment label in two limited-edition DVD box sets next year. This will be the first time the series will be available in North America on licensed DVD.
Princess Knight (also known as "Ribbon no Kishi") is a 52-episode series from 1967 based off of the manga by Osamu Tezuka. Princess Knight is the tale of Princess Sapphire who was given a boy's heart by mistake before birth. She must pretend to be a man in order to inherit the throne and to protect the kingdom from her evil uncle. Vertical Inc released a two volume set of the manga last year.
The DVDs will feature the original English-language dub and a Spanish-language audio option. Unfortunately, not all the materials were able to be collected and this box set will feature a cut version of the show and no Japanese audio track.

Nozomi seems to have very specific taste in shoujo. Between this, Rose of Versailles, and Revolutionary Girl Utena... Not that I'm mind, their tastes very much coincide with mine. I'm a iittle disappointed there won't be a Japanese track, but apparently it got junked when Mushi Pro went bankrupt so there's little they can do about it.
Looking forward to this!

Really happy about this news. It almost gives me a reason to read my copies of Princess Knight. Only wish I could watch the Japanese version.

Another older series that I might want to buy. I think the Shoujo Beat magazine had an article on this when the magazine was still being published.

Shojo Beat actually published the first chapter of the manga at one point.

So we will get the edited English version and not the original? I won't mind buy it if that is the case if they didn't change the original script much.

Well, I guess kids will like it. At least Rightstuf makes an effort to provide material for all ages.

The newer titles they release usually are, as they've said dubbing is too costly for them to do.
But this is one that you don't have to worry about for an english dub. As the news story mentions this will be a english/spanish dub only with no japanese audio track.

May of their newer titles are but they have had dubbed titles in the past. In this case they will be using the original English dub from the 60s.

I could see children watching old cartoons (see Tom & Jerry, Scooby Doo and the older Disney releases), and I would like to think that subtitles on their own shouldn't be too much of a problem if they know how to read, but both at the same time?
I'm not really too sure who they are aiming this at, other than the "Rose of Versailles predecessor" (in terms of the crossdressing female lead) factor.
Well, this one has never actually been fansubbed beyond the first couple of episodes, so a full release is welcome for anime history enthusiasts who want to see one of the first shoujo anime to be made
