Nihon TV's Policy to Support Unremunerative 'Chihayafuru'

According to Asahi newspaper, anime critic Fujitsu Ryota reported the policy of Nihon TV, which aired Chihayafuru. The quality of the anime was decent and it could have attracted audience in a wide range of generations if it had been aired in the evening. However, no company sponsored the program (i.e. the anime producers purchased the time slot) and the DVD sales were unsuccessful. There is a discrepancy between the purchaser of the DVD/Blu-ray disc media and the general TV viewers, which mainly contribute to the ratings. Nihon TV supports unprofitable anime such as Chihayafuru of their own volition.

I mean, sure have moe, harem, bishies, bl, fanservice. But it used to sadden me only those appealing to the otaku and fujoshi would only sell and that there aren't enough shojo manga anime adaptation fujoshi...:( seriously, japanese girls what's wrong with you?

Once again I say: my faith in humanity os restored.

Why can't they air it during prime time? I mean, I know that some other, more popular shows have that slot but they could always create another station like Nihon TV 2 and air their other projects there at normal hours.

It's not like that's something easily done without any risk or investment though. And if you have a sister station airing your more popular works at the same time, odds are most people will be watching that instead.

Most anime doesn't need prime time. It's niche and aimed at otaku, so late night is fine. Ratings don't matter, just merch and BD sales.

Now, Chihayafuru wasn't really suited to late night, but the whole issue is that they couldn't find any sponsors for it to air it earlier. Without sponsors, you have to buy a slot yourself, and buying a prime time slot would be prohibitively expensive, if you could even find one. So they went the late night model, rather than not do it at all.

I don't get it, why do these shows air at such a late hour? Do they really expect somebody to be watching at 1:30 ?

This is what they do in my country. Almost every big network has child stations.

How much does it cost to important Chihayafuru?

Like any Japanese anime release, a Although Chihayafuru is a lot cheaper than most.

It looks like it will be 8 or 9 discs (Amazon only has 5 listed so far) at ¥5040 MSRP each for Blu Ray (quite cheap, relatively). So if 9 discs, ¥45,360 (~$550) for two cour. Amazon Japan is usually ~27% off, so ~$400 USD without counting S&H (the cost of which depends on how large a given order is). Frankly that's not bad at all, I've imported more than a few shows that were half as many episodes but cost just as much or more.

But in short, probably a lot more than you were expecting if you need to ask.

I plan on importing it, so there's one person who will spend money on it.

Chihayafuru is one of the better show out there that I really love. Too bad the majority of anime viewer only care about shows with fanservice and moe. Chihayafuru is a real hidden gem to me.

This is actually really disappointing; Chihayafuru was an AMAZING anime!
I completely agree with this Ryota character~!

People who like Josei anime. People clearly do otherwise there wouldn't be a market for it. Not everyone watches shitty shounen and harem shit.

Maybe it should be moved to the series board.

I don't know whether it is a reliable source but there is a chance of the other season

"I heard from a guy who has a secret source" is pretty much the worst kind of thing to base expectations on. ...But I've got my fingers crossed anyway. Please be real.

I just finished the last ep, and decided to see if a second season had been announced, and I get THIS instead. Can't say I'm surprised, but man... really sad.

Here's to hoping a second season is made anyways!

Everything about this anime is fine, but the whole card poem thing can get old after a while.

Damn. Chihayafuru was such a great anime. I finished watching and still want more. Hope the manga continues and hopefully there will be a second season. Great plot characters, style, everything. Will be missed.
