People actually read Yu-gi-oh GX? wow.
I can't speak on GX's behalf, but the first Yugioh was fairly dark. Everyone who lost died.
GX is majorly lighter....well that is till the fourth season when horrible stuff happens and main character
And even then the first more lighter seasons had stuff like
And then we had the final villain who looked like a more anime version of this
Yes, for a show of its genre, both series og yugioh were quite dark things.

the fir4st yugioh season was a great start for the series, actually I considered it one of the top 5 animes of the 1990s. the second series was where it tried to incorprate the "high school" theme into Yugioh, and it failed to me. but Yu-Gi-Oh 5D'S was EXCELLENT! it was absolutely amazing that it's story flowed so smoothly! and the story kept me always on the line except for a few episodes.
but the Manga? they were all bad. but the GX's manga was known for having excellent promotional cards that were attached to the books for free.
though it puzzles me as to why people brought THIS specific volume...... since the promotional card was pretty BAD this time.
on a second note, KANNAGI! finally the americans released it. I am watching the series right now in fact.
but still sometimes the American have no taste :/

Iunno if this is true of any Yugioh beyond the original but the manga was loads different then the cartoon show. Focused much more on character and story. Could be that way with GX I guess... or people just like their card games.
I've never heard of Ultimo... looks interesting, I'll have to look into it.
