Aniplex Suffers From a Huge Gap Between Winning and Failed Anime

According to Eiga.com, anime producer Aniplex has held a press conference on this year's line-ups. At the conference, President Natsume Koichiro said, "The sales of anime has been improved by the spread of Blu-ray, but there has been a larger and larger gap between successful and failed titles due to the careful selection of the consumers." Aniplex attributed the restrained consumption to the decline of young people's income and the unstable employments. Small number of hit titles are sold quite well but the rest of the titles have large deficits. There are few break-even titles. "The current situation of the market causes a stab of pain to the anime producers," Natsume said.

In order to improve the successful rate of their releases, Aniplex has integrated the production department with the publicity department and divided it into two groups headed by the vice president Katsumata Hideo and the producer Iwakami Atsuhiro.

Profiles of the two group leaders:
Katsumata Hideo: The former president of A-1 Pictures. The producer of "Kuroshitsuji", "Kannagi", "Senjou no Valkyria".
Iwakami Atsuhiro: The producer of "Kara no Kyoukai", "Bakemonogatari", "Madoka Magica", "OreImo".

Question: how DVDs/Blu-rays do they have to sell in order for the anime to break even?

3k is the average amount. Some may be more or less due to the size of the budget though

Really 3k? Madoka must be raking in the cash!

How come Infinite Shit is selling this good? What's wrong with people out there?

Because unlike you, many people liked the series. Personally, I was glad to see it stay rather true to the novellas.

doesnt change the fact it's a piece of crap

Shame on Level E selling so low. Then again, maybe it was only fun for me because I was watching it with a friend.

But the gap between 2 and 3 is almost comical.

nope, level e was probably the best of winter alongside madoka. it is a massive shame it didn't sell well

At least Dragon Crisis & Rio are getting the sales they deserve. Those were 2 of the utter crap shows of the season. Although I'm wondering why Freezing is so high in the sales, when it was just as bad as Dragon Crisis & Rio.

There hasn't been a single show in the Qwaser, Ikki Tousen, Samurai Girls, Queens Blade etc mold that HASN'T sold 5k. 5k-6k is like the minimum for those borderline hentai series with lots of boobs.

Speaking of Samurai Girls, Sentai Filmworks is licensing it with an August 23rd release in the US only.

So many people not understanding IS's sales... Are you really trying?
It's very simple. It's got nothing to do with battle sequences or plot, fanservice, or anything. It's the girls. You're bound to like at least one girl of the harem, and when Germany came to the scene, the show basically became a battle between france and germany (for the fans). I mean, the CGI was shit, and the plot was weak, obviously no one bought it for neither of those reasons, all that matters is the HNNNG-factor.
And it makes sense. You might like a show with a good nicely done story and might want to own it for that reason; but the reality is, you can only truly enjoy the plot once, so if you're going to buy something, there's probably other reasons.

Also. ITT, people complayning their favorite anime didn't sell.

If anyone is a good prophet, can someone tell me when an anime crash will happen, if it ever does.

This list only proves that japotaku have no taste and they love being shafted.

I don't understand why freezing and especially IS are so high in the rankings even though they aren't good series, or that's at least how many people think about it. I find it also weird that (compared) Madoka sells so much and Kimi ni Todoke and Gosick so much more less. And I really expected the 4 last (except for Rio) to be much more higher in the rankings.
And wtf, 562 sells of dragon crisis? That's a ridiculously small amount, though it really isn't a bad series. Onii-chan is much worse, but in Japan incest always sells so that shouldn't be a problem for the producers. And Hourou Musuko and Fractale should be much higher also, they're one of the best series last season!

fractale was awesome people just are too lowbrow to understand most anime aniplex did will be major sales when they hit the western countrys

That's exactly what i'm thinking

May 28, 2011 8:41 AM by darkquach

Why are people surprised IS did well?
Same crap as Madoka in that they are both titles that play it safe. They are both saturated with the junk that appeals to a majority of the viewership. I bet everyone who purchased IS also purchased Madoka. IS also had a large readership before the anime aired.

The funny thing with this thread is that the biggest loser here appears to be Starchild (according to the rankings of Winter season). Aniplex productions produces more hit titles than other anime companies, say Starchild, Geneon, or Media Factory.
