Aniplex Suffers From a Huge Gap Between Winning and Failed Anime

According to Eiga.com, anime producer Aniplex has held a press conference on this year's line-ups. At the conference, President Natsume Koichiro said, "The sales of anime has been improved by the spread of Blu-ray, but there has been a larger and larger gap between successful and failed titles due to the careful selection of the consumers." Aniplex attributed the restrained consumption to the decline of young people's income and the unstable employments. Small number of hit titles are sold quite well but the rest of the titles have large deficits. There are few break-even titles. "The current situation of the market causes a stab of pain to the anime producers," Natsume said.

In order to improve the successful rate of their releases, Aniplex has integrated the production department with the publicity department and divided it into two groups headed by the vice president Katsumata Hideo and the producer Iwakami Atsuhiro.

Profiles of the two group leaders:
Katsumata Hideo: The former president of A-1 Pictures. The producer of "Kuroshitsuji", "Kannagi", "Senjou no Valkyria".
Iwakami Atsuhiro: The producer of "Kara no Kyoukai", "Bakemonogatari", "Madoka Magica", "OreImo".

People didn't like Fractale and Dragon Crisis? Wowzas, I thought DC at least would be popular in Japan. It was like Toradora with dragons. But I do understand where this gap is coming from. Many people have to limit their purchases nowadays and they're naturally only going to want the best of the best

Most anime that air after midnight rarely ever do well. Either they have a huge brand name backing them, or there is already a huge hype going for it, in the case of Madoka.

To get an idea on what did well and what didn't take a look at this blog: http://www.awesome-engine.com/2010/12/20/what-anime-actually-looked-like-in-2010/

Market saturation. Just how much anime do you think we can consume? Lighten the load and everything will sell.

Anime needs Nintendo's 1980's-early 1990's rules on the number of titles produced to prevent further oversaturation.

Actually the reason behind IS popularity is more brand loyalty than anything else same with Madoka but Madoka had many other major factors as well.

Because unlike you, many people liked the series. Personally, I was glad to see it stay rather true to the novellas.

Your logic baffles me. DC is nowhere near toradora in any of it's aspects. The only thing similar is Rie, which doesn't mean anything at all.

And the answer is not rearranging departments damnit, just lower the cost for BRs. Of course no one would pay 40 dollars for two episodes of a series they just "liked".

Make crap like Dragon Crisis. Expect it to sell well.

I'm not suprised IS sold so well, for a dumb harem with a dumb protagonist, it was enjoyable and rather well made. I'm more suprised as to why Freezing is so high, i mean it got rather weak as it progressed.
Also, why's Fractale so low? (屮゚Д゚)屮

Shame on Level E selling so low. Then again, maybe it was only fun for me because I was watching it with a friend.

But the gap between 2 and 3 is almost comical.

This is wrong by definition. "Most" anime air after midnight in general, whether they do or not plays no role in whether they're a success or a failure. Anime that air before midnight are usually kids shows that don't rely on disk sales and use the traditional ratings model anyway, with the sole exception of the Nichigo (5 pm) slot which airs anime like Gundam, Geass, Star Driver, and Ao no Exorcist.

Also, you don't have to have huge hype to be a success, just look at this season's TIGER&BUNNY which is setting up to be the best selling show of the season.

fri said:

I theorize that it's because it was the second best show out of the rather shitty crop of winter shows, therefore allowing it more attention than it would get in a season with more good shows, and on top of that it had very good action sequences.

if they want their stuff to sell then they should lower their prices, the only reason I hardly ever buy anime is because it costs so much more than every other tv series I could be buying (with a few exceptions). If they just dropped the price into the $20-50 per season range (depending on series length) then I'm sure their sales would increase drastically across the board and that people who don't buy anime at all would begin to do so.

Yep I can cut down on my anime consumption by 50% and focus on some LNs and manga, Strawberry Panic will be is out with all volumes of the novel in the US, I just started on Ro-Kyu-Bu (novel) and will be starting on the manga soon, I'm also thinking of starting on 2 other manga this summer and I still haven't forgot about Atelier Meruru for the PS3 (Preordered the LE).

Yeah it sold really well for some reason. Really remains a mystery as to why, it's not like there was any redeeming feature (before people mention fanservice there were other series at the time doing a better job of it).

A well animated and produced mix of two of the most popular genres in anime sold well? Color me surprised!

I think the first-second gap has more to do with Madoka being a runaway hit, but I don't know how to explain the 30k gap between Infinite Stratos and KnT.

Hopefully IS's numbers will help motivate a second season. I liked the show quite a bit (and think a lot of people were too hard on it), but only having 12 episodes kinda nullified the chance for any decent plot/character development.

I prefer to buy titles that are good but will eventually become difficult to find later, popular anime will always sell, it will be there tomorrow, next week, next month, next year. it won't go anywhere

they need to tone down the popular successful anime, so the consumers buy others

They should make less crap like Dragon Crisis and MM!. Seriously, if the studio is just going to ruin the character designs (the only selling point of moe shows), they shouldn't have proceed with the project.

And for those who are telling to lower the prices of Blu-Ray? Do you think the increase in the no. of customers would outweigh the loss of profit they'll get from lowering the price? Search for price elasticity of demand in Wikipedia.

Also, remember that the target consumers of companies like Aniplex are Japanese consumers, not you.

Moe sells and charts show that.

Just shows how perverted society as a whole has become, the generation gap keeps getting bigger.
People used to hate talking about sexual based areas and were fine with death, now its the other way around.

Fractale was marketed as one that will save anime
Viewers set high expectations for show (most likely through 2ch)
Show is just decent (not to mention that they wasted a good premise)

not that the rivalry between Madoka and Fractale helps

EDIT:

Not always the case. Being a moe show doesn't create a guarantee that it will sell. For example, Shukufuku no Campanella, MM!, Dragon Crisis, TWGOK (yes, it didn't sell for some unknown reason), Fortune Arterial, Mayoi Neko Overrun, and many other shows of the similar kind.

Hot girls sell BD/DVD (ie. Infinite Stratos). Or more precise, hot girls engaging in a lot of ecchi moments with the protagonist would sell, this is where Zombie fails. Also IS has the best art out of all of those, no contest.

Madoka sells well for obvious reasons, it's epic, once in a year kind of show.

haha first reaction to the quote in this article: great shows sells high while crappy shows sells low? there are no "middle room"? really?!?!

anime, tv/dvd/bluray by description is a visual entertainment,...of course fan service will always be a hit.
if you want good plots and deep characterisation, read a book. they have editors that reviews them and can actually decide whether or not a book should be released to public. crappy dvds get released in hopes that the sales would at least cover the expense of making said crappy dvd.
of course once in a while they have great animes (like madoka this season) but they dont really expect that all the anime release turns out to be like madoka.... do they?

ps. IS is crap haha
