Improvements to adding things to the Database

- Users should get a notification when something they suggested got accepted/denied, as well as once it is getting processed. I remember adding a voice actor for a character 3 times until almost a year later it was finally added, but I didn't get a notification (so I only found out when I wanted to add the voice actor a 4th time). So this would reduce the amount of multiple suggestions for the same entry as well make it more satisfying for the users to add something to the Database.

- You should be able to add the author (and artist) when adding an entry to the Manga Database (I at least couldn't find it here

-Adding a field where you could put your source for the edit would also be a good idea.

-It would also be helpful if you could revisit and edit the suggestion if you forgot something or let's say the picture you submitted had the wrong format.

- It should also be easier to find the proper place to suggest/add/edit things related to the Database. You could add a link near the Genres/Themes of every entry that puts you to the right Forum post to add/edit the Genres/Themes, or even better: put that option to the list where you suggest everything else and make it so that you will be put to the right forum post.
You could also add a Link to the Manga/Anime Search that puts you to this.

+1!

Getting tired of constantly repeating suggestions so here are related threads (where I commented with the same sentiments):

I also didn't receive notifs for some of my submissions. And if you submit PVs, CMs or trailers, don't expect any notifs at all. Oh, and there's also a recent issue with other notifs like for the watched topics (see: Notifications are broken again and Not Receiving Notifications on Watching Threads)...

Honestly, AniList has better forms and notification system for submissions; my only gripe is they only allow one video for PVs, CMs or trailers unlike here. They're also a little more strict with character submissions.

MAL has something called 'contributions' on the user profile but access has been restricted to mods only.
In the past you could see all your DB modification requests with their status (pending, approved, denied) and an information which mod made the decision (long ago one of my modification requests had been denied so I've messaged a mod directly stating my reason for the modification; it the end the change was approved).

If I remember correctly the access has been restricted because the page was unreliable (whatever this means). I, personally, never had any problems with this page when I had access to it.

Didn't know that existed O: Having access to that would definitely help

Maybe that 'contributions' page could just be viewable privately same with AniList. I'm getting tired of checking my messages for notifs and listing my submissions (whether approved or denied) in my blog for archiving purposes.

Ah, just reminds me of how they removed the comments section in 'People' pages. ๐Ÿ˜’

Those are good suggestions but why are you doing this to yourself? You need to submit things 3 times and it gets added a year later? Why are you still dealing with this bullshit?

MAL used to be a good and reliable source many years ago but now they are too busy mass deleting threads and adding features that nobody asked for. I've been using Wikipedia as my main source for anime for quite a while now, they are much more reliable and up to date and you can actually edit stuff yourself there. Stop wasting your time trying to improve MAL, it's a lost cause.

I think the biggest problem is that I have no way of knowing if my edits have been denied or if they are still pending. Because either way, the respective page still looks the same way it did before my edit. One of my edits finally did get approved after 4 years of pending.

Wikipedia only allows you to add things deemed important. They won't have info on a random hentai doujin.

Bumping this again.

Can we please have our 'contributions' page be viewable privately? The notifs I get from my submissions just add up to the inbox limit (1,000) that I can't reply to PMs from other users. I don't want to delete those notifs. But if we can view our 'contributions' page then I'd be fine deleting stuff in my inbox. I deleted some but I'm still over the limit. Please, increase the inbox limit (1,000) or just remove it same with the watched topics limit (600).

Another bump!

Can we also please have access to our 'contributions' page since it's now impossible to check the manga DB queue via https://sean.fish/mal_unapproved/manga but the anime DB queue on https://sean.fish/mal_unapproved/anime is still viewable.

BTW, here's DBSentinel's new link: https://sean.fish/dbsentinel/

Great, so MAL makes it impossible to view the pending queue now. If you can't see the problem, there's no problem, huh? They didn't get a single new mod since 1.5 months of recruitment (according to the staff lsit)

@St0rmblade, I actually just found out today when I tried checking the queue. It looks like it's already an issue for several days now if you check https://sean.fish/mal_unapproved/manga and their Discord. Seeing the queue has always been helpful when submitting manga. It's almost like a deja vu (ahem.... Music Type series excluded from Ranking without explanation... ahem...). They don't even inform the users of such changes. Oh, and have you noticed they've also disabled comments for a couple of past announcements (ex.: Planned 4hr Maintenance, Thursday June 1 @ 12am-4am PT, Planned 6hr Maintenance, Friday August 4 @ 12am-6am PT, Planned 4hr Maintenance, Thursday August 31 @ 12am-4am PT). They started doing that around May. Back in April, we can still comment on such maintenance announcements: Planned 3hr Maintenance, Friday April 28 @ 2am-5am PT.

I agree completely, I was cleaning up the BTR manga and I don’t know why I got notifications for manga covers that got accepted but not any for character pictures and profiles that got accepted. The fact that it’s so inconsistent confuses me.

And I also think that they show allow “contributions” to be viewable. Not only would it be helpful, but also just cool to see on a website that’s supposed to be a database

Uhm, in AniList there's a 'Submissions' tab/page (ex: https://anilist.co/user/IridescentJaune/submissions) but it can only be viewed by the user and not everyone. That page is useful as a user can see the status of their submissions (Anime, Manga, Characters, Staff).

I'm just gonna quote myself again from Is there a way to check the status of my submissions/edits?
IridescentJaune said:
You can use DBSentinel to check if your anime or manga submission/s got approved, deleted, denied or unapproved or Unapproved MAL Entries - Anime / Unapproved MAL Entries - Manga to check your if your submission is still pending. Unfortunately, there's no way to check for the status of your character submission/s or other edits; you'll just have to wait for a notification from a mod or manually check the anime/manga page to see if your edit was accepted.

AniList has a 'Submissions' tab on user profiles (you can only view your submissions, though).

You can see these:
Submissions
Anime
Manga
Characters
Staff

You'll be notified if your submission is Partially Accepted, Accepted or Rejected. There are also 'Mod Notes' detailing why your submission got accepted or rejected; same with messages/notifications from mods here. But the separate 'Submissions' tab is better than having everything mixed up with PMs in your 'My Messages' inbox.

MAL should have a similar feature. Plus, they need to update their submission forms (to something like this). Also, there's still no way for users to submit external links like in AniList! I really wish we can submit official streaming and reading links directly on anime and manga pages instead of using Google Forms ([Update Feb 5] Streaming Information Now Available on Seasonal, DB, List) every time.

(Related thread: Add a section for sources when making a submission.)

Not after it being viewable publicly but having that page viewable by users on their own profile page will certainly be of help to those who submit stuff regularly to the DB. We need that page more now that it's impossible to check the manga DB queue via Unapproved MAL Entries - Manga. If improved, that'd be really useful instead of checking the queue on other sites. Anyways, at least DBSentinel/Unapproved MAL Entries - Anime gets it. I'm just thankful that we can see the status of submissions and even the metadata there as I like seeing metadata; it's unfortunate that MAL thinks otherwise.

@ACasualViewer

So there’s a problem with the site code? That’s pretty unfortunate.

What happened to ACasualViewer's comments here? Did they delete their comments? Why? So they do delete their comments, eh? I noticed that in another thread before as well. LOL. I should've quoted or "@" them. Haha.

Anyways, we can view the manga DB queue again on https://sean.fish/mal_unapproved/manga and https://sean.fish/dbsentinel/search?entry_type=manga&status=approved. So glad purplepinapples found a workaround for the manga DB queue (https://github.com/Hiyori-API/checker_mal).

I've suggested a similar thread before, asking if they can make it easer for us to help update their database since it's so lackluster or outdated.
I was about to suggest sean.fish as well.
