This is false in my experience. Bad / unsatisfying endings are common everywhere, even books. I only agree with the notion that anime more often than other media dont get any ending at all. There is just this notion of anime/manga having more bad endings because anime are likely 1. more ambitious than say western cartoons (which are mostly episodic and humorous) and 2. significantly longer increasing the risk of an unsatisfying ending. Of those listed i even doubt whether some of them are actually controversial at all (and not just seem so bc of a small vocal minority). Anyway, as for the worst ending in anime/manga... its pretty difficult bc you first have to find some that have an ending in the first place... I guess ill just go with Bleach then, though i have already forgotten most of it. |

| It's part of the Japanese ethos. That's how, on average, they tell stories. You see it all the time in anime, in manga, in shitty light novels, in films and in well respected literature. Natsume Soseki is (in)famous for that. One novel, my favourite one actually, ends with some gratuitous weird lsd-like delusion. Kokoro, his most famous books (which was adapted for Aoi Bungaku Series), is pretty much inconclusive. Take another prestigious author, Yasunari Kawabata, who wasn't interested in ending his stories in a meaningful way because, in the zend mind, everything keeps flowing. With that in mind, I never have high expectations for good endings. I'm pretty much desensitized. I guess Soul Eater was frustrating, but it wasn't a very good series either; I just liked Maka. |

| @OiantakuYT yeah I feel that OP hasn’t seen a lot of western media. There are endings, heck even final seasons worse than season 8 of game of thrones. Like remember the awful endings to Twilight, hunger games, Star Wars the rise of skywalker, dark knight rises, Wonder Woman, jurasssic world, I am legend, every single film by m night? Or how about how dreadful the later seasons of The Walking Dead, Heroes, Lost, Supernatural, Dexter, Weeds, How I met ur mother ended up being? |

| there are a lot of stories that got bad near the end due to the series being cut. for manga: -air gear for anime: -eyeshield 21 -rurouni kenshin I don't consider some of the title you provided to be "bad ending" (btw, this term sounds misleading to me as bad ending in VN usually means something like a character dead or you ended up not with the person you wanted). naruto, 7 taizai, and erased's ending is decent iirc. death note is not a bad conclusion. while attack on titan is controversial at best. not necessarily bad. |

It's not something anyone could reasonably think in real life. "Doing what you think will result in the world being destroyed" can never be a good choice. |

| Yeah Shingeki no Kyojin is a strong contender for worst ending I've ever seen. I'll also bring up Shokugeki no Soma, Monster and Higashi no Eden for making their series feel like a waste of time, as well as the Digimon Adventure movies and Rebuild of Evangelion feeling designed to attack fans of the original. |

The manga's ending definitely felt more satisfying and earned compared to the anime, where the main antagonist tanks everyone's strongest attacks, takes absolutely no damage from any of it, and then is defeated by a "courage punch" that the writers pulled out of their ass at the last minute because they needed to give Maka a cheesy "power of friendship"-esque victory. |

| First anime comes to mind: Erased. The ending was way too rushed and didn't like what happened to the main characters and the story in the end. It also leaves a big disappointment after finishing Erased anime. Huge disappointment. |

| Well one I would say that you thread title isn't exactly what you are talking about as you went off on Anime/manga having worse endings on average than Western media rather than just simply being about what is the worst ending you have encountered. I mean unless your list isn't reflective of what you have seen on what basis are you making the anime/manga on average has worse endings? You basically are cherry picking. You got plenty of good endings A Silent Voice, Showa Rakugo, Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!, Parasyte the Maxim, Ping Pong the Animation, Ashita no Joe, Cowboy Bebop, Bakuman, Baccano!, Legend of the Galactic Heroes (even if the last two arcs weren't as good as most of the show the last few episodes ended the show solidly), Gundam MS Team, Major, JoJo in general most parts I am happy with how they end, Future Boy Conan. I mean it's not hard to name plenty of shows that ended solidly in my opinion. I don't believe in ragging people for just not seeing enough but if you are going to be confident to state something true about an entire industry you need to see more than you have. It's all opinions at the end of the day but if you are say the entire medium has x trend I think you should have seen quite a bit at least. In general stories that go for long runs in serial TV format, comics, books are going to have more to live up to and more expectations. They often will not live up to those. It's that simple. You will find more mediocre or bad endings in general because frankly it's hard to wrap up something where everyone is going to be satisfied. That is why Battle shonen have difficulty with good endings in particular. They usually are long running popular stories that have to live up to a lot of expectations. Anyway for me a truly bad ending is where it hurts the work that came before. There are a lot of not so great endings like in Naruto where I actually don't think some of the bad decisions hurt the overall narrative for me. I got what I wanted in the end even if some of the narrative decisions leading up to that were iffy. Jormugand though is a case of an ending where just the last episode or two can really change my perspective of a series. AOT is up there as well. |

Also don't cite Critical dude lol his takes on the industry as so terrible. Edit: Also to add I actually think Dallos is up there for worst ending. Just imagine watching an early 80s OVA original that has no sequel and it ends on a cliffhanger lol. Any story that does that is going to tick me off probably the most. |

| domekano was a terrible series from the beginning, but somehow the author outdid herself and made it even worse by writing an absolutely atrocious ending that most likely outraged the majority of fans of the series. Just straight up insulting lol Idgaf about domekano but the ending is so incredibly bad that I'm actually impressed. One I personally took offense at was Prison School ending. Like I loved Prison School so much. There were so many directions the author could have gone with to end the story and satisfy the fans. Instead the ending is just an abrupt, non sensical, anticlimatic attempt of a twist that makes everything that happened throughout the series meaningless. It served no purpose. It accomplished nothing more than a raised eyebrow and the rage of the fans. Nothing worse than a good series ruined by an awful ending. |
