We got more storytelling and lore happening this episode.

However, the highlight imo is that fight between Gabimaru and Sagiri. It was more of an emotional struggle than to see who can better. Despite telling Sagiri he won't feel anything from killing, he struggles to land the finishing blow. I gotta say, this episode gave hope that Gabimaru can make a turnaround in his life and be can be strong. A great way to show more of Gabimaru's personality while also giving insight on Sagiri's wisdom with her words.

Finally, our criminals are on the island, and looks like the conflicts have already started among them. Gabimaru, as expected is very strong and took down his opponent very easily and the same goes for others as well. The dangers of this island are not for just the criminals but the Asaemons as well. Many started losing their lives so early in the competition.

Gabimaru's love for his wife is so sweet. It gives him such a unique personality imo. He's such a sweet character. Sagiri is an interesting character as well. Can't wait to see more of their dynamic in this show. The horrors of the island are so well depicted. All the creepy creatures on the island.

Yes I mean if you see the residents of stone village, Gabimaru being the closest one to look at, you can see these people sure don’t die that easily. Though it may be the result of their training and all, there's more to that, for their leader at least. Sure seems like someone who used the elixir of immortality on himself.

Now on the island, we started the battle royal just like that.. I mean they should’ve taken their time exploring the land first, it’s kind of beautiful after all, but no they onto reducing the numbers from the get go. Kishou’s convict did come, with his monster like physique and challenged Gabimaru, but hey we know, right, of what would’ve transpired there? Gabimaru obliterated that man, quite brutally at that. And it isn’t just them, everyone’s onto the same thing, reducing the numbers that are… way before arriving on this island.

Gabimaru did act rash there, attacking Sagiri out of nowhere. I mean he has conditions to fulfil the task and running away from this island, but nearly killing Sagiri over that would’ve dealt a great blow to his resolve, but thankfully the teachings of his wife stopped him from yet another useless killing. He’ll change, and for the better. By the way, the real things have started to appear, those strange as heck monsters.

Numbers have already slimmed down, damn. RIP to that hot blond chick Akaginu.

At long last, Gabimaru and the criminals, together with the escorting Yamada Asaemon clan people, step into Shosenkyo, the land of Paradise to find the Elixir of Life. Sagiri supervising Gabimaru, and all that matters to her is that he must be kept restrained and following under orders. The weapon-fetish criminal Twisted Keiun paired with Kisho, comes for the attack against Gabimaru, and as much as Sagiri is ingrained to the hand-binding rule on Gabimaru, he didn't flinch, and is able to take down Keiun, which Kisho is only responsible for taking his head back. But this is a lawless island, where criminals will die on their own accord, and the Asaemon clan will arise a new leader based on this expedition...if anything, it's a battle for survival on two fronts.

Gabimaru vs. Sagiri, and there's a clear moment of hesitation on both of them: Gabimaru, based on the emotions with his wife, and Sagiri, based on her exertion to execute. Strength and weakness counts for a lot, and Gabimaru is ready to kill for more since he is emotionless and raised in the wrong environment, thus with the same for Sagiri that is only stopped because he feels weak, which she averse that it is actually strength. Both have a lot to work on their emotions, that's for damn sure.

The Paradise monsters themselves are the same story, and this is a fight for survival for all. Creepy creatures be gone.

So none of the two seems to be able to kill the other, even when they would have no reasons not to whatsoever in a life or death situation.

It is quite nice how his wife basically changed him for the better. But having both Sagiri and Gabimary sharing a similar burden is interesting. Considering their initial relationship.

Sagiri is a deontologist for her rules are absolute or should be followed so she should learn some consequentialism too like that other executioner is teaching her

facts does not care about feelings
but feelings are more important than facts for humans?
fact value distinction aka is ought problem
Gabimaru just learned that

also power protects but power corrupts too though

I like how in the first episode Sagiri looked liked this super powerful character, but now I see that she is clearly weaker than Gabimaru and she is full of doubts herself.

Definitely some of the best shonen and best work from MAPPA I’ve seen.

Really emotional episode seeing both Sagiri and Gabimaru confront and accept their struggles. Found it hilarious Sagiri still wanted his hands bound when fighting an 8 foot tall beast of a man, but he did that easily lol.

Speaking of Sagiri, can’t get over how much I love her design.

The monster designs are absolutely horrifying and otherworldly. They really capture the hellish nature of this island. The centipedes with hands coming out their mouths is going to fuck with me all day.

Interesting how the possibility of Iwagakure taking over the Shogunate fueled Gabimaru to start acting more ferocious. He knows he has to get that Elixir of Life before Iwagakure gets it.

Man are all those other characters actually dead? Would have been cool to get them somewhat developed but if the anime is going to focus mostly on Gabimaru and Sagiri im okay with it.

Story is taking a good or maybe a appreciable direction. Both main characters acknowledged each other. And we got to know more about Iwagakure ninjas/jonin.
With that aside, the way Gabimaru realized he's not hollow could have been done more good.

This episode is the reason why I ask in the previous episode thread if shogune have any back up plan just in case if the criminal happen to consume the elixir. Someone said that the executioner will just kill that criminal, but this episode is a proof that some criminals are already very strong, even without elixir, they can kill the executioner. And it seems like elixir effect is not just a long-live, but the invincibility as well, just as shown by the head of the assassin clan that can survive with a blade in his head.

Oh, anyone notice the gender symbolism? This is an easy one. Male (Gabimaru) = sword, while female (Sagiri) = scabbard (sword sheath), it's oldschool symbol but it's still a nice one that work well on a traditional setting like this anime.

The island sure was pretty vibrant. The switch from curious mode to executioner sure was quick as a flash. A warrior monk that fell in love with his weapons huh a odd way to become a criminal indeed. If anything even the famed Asaemon family didn't prep enough for the kind of prisoners they expected to oversee. The leadership contest sure added to the stakes. Yui's spirit appearing to stop Gabi from killing Sagiri though was a nice touch. But not being able to feel any kind of emotions whether positive or negative one's must make for a lonely life. Their first proper island trial looks to be some rather hiduous insects and giants. Top tier ep that featured some nice expansion on the Asaemon as well their duties on the island as well. The fight between Gabi and Sagiri also did well to induce the first changes within both their respective characters.

Didn't the shogun and his squad said in the previous episode that if the Asaemon die the criminals would be executed as well? So why they are killing each other and why Gabimaru tried to kill Sagiri? I thought that they should come back from the island together. I don't understand, or am I missing something?

The criminals have been set loose on the paradise island. Beginning their venture to find the elixir of life somewhere on this god forsaken world beyond. Gabimaru and Sagiri have a fun banter already built in from the earlier episodes that's carrying over now to the island. That giant warrior monk trying to kill Gabimaru right away. The way he dodged that mace was incredible, dislocate his neck while jumping. Gabimaru straight flexing on this crazy giant dude using all his weapons against him in the end. Animation looked good whole Gabimaru was reversing the weapons on their owner. Turning himself on Sagiri next I didn't expect that. Again the animation looked really good here as Gabimaru and Sagiri crossed swords. Gabimaru trying to be his old hollow self taking her out before people from his village arrive and make the island even worse. Gabimaru having those emotions deep inside that he tries to keep buried. His wife knew he's a kind man just hardened by his environment he grew up in, Gabimaru still has emotions like a person does. Sagiri saw it as he committed each act as we've seen so far, Gabimaru had a burdened face every time. He just wants to get back home to his wife. Which now will be extremely tough with these insane looking giant creatures popping up for a fight.

The setup is so stupid... yeah lets get loose these 10 ultra powerful convicted guys on this unknown island alongside 10 "strong" guardians. What could possibly go wrong? They will surely get back with the elixir!

Hope there is an actual reason behind this expedition otherwise the premise is really weak.

In any case gabimaru seems so op and edgy that he wouldnt have any problems slaughtering any convict and asaemon and go back to his wife. It certainly would be a lot quicker and easier than go through this elixir's search. I know it wont be the case since they are already developing him with all this talks about emotions vs hollow but yeah... he couldve soloed everyone in ep2.

If he brings the Elixir nobody will care about anything else. Also with new information Gabimaru probably thinks that with overzealous supervisor in tow he doesn't have a chance to find the target in time, so he's nothing to lose either way.

Not a fan of how both fights seem to just skip portions. Hopefully there's less of that in the future.

Little worried about the visuals too. Some of the faces were not looking great. Sagiri's face/eye shape seems quite inconsistent. That purple haired guy's face looked pretty terrible at times too.

Emotional strength comes from engaging your emotions is obviously true. Like you can only be brave if you know what fear is.

Nice bonding moment between Gabimaru and Sagiri. Meanwhile things turned up quickly in the backround. Interesting that this was a rather slow paced episode where a lot happenend. Ngl at this rate I might not hold out long before reading the manga.

So the Elixir of Life does exist,  but its not clear whether or not this so called Elixiron the island called Paradise. It didn't take long for the criminals started attacking each other and their Yamada clan handlers as Gabimaru not only had to fight another criminal, but he also started attacking Sagiri. The fight between Gabimaru and Sagiri was intense as both of them couldn't each other. For Sagiri it was her fear of taking another that was continue to eat away at her spirit while Gabimaru was trying to suppress his emotions based on his old teachings that emotions were a form of weakness. Cooler heads prevail as Gabimaru was reminded by his wife that he is not a killer and that Sagiri's fear can be used as strength to survive. Both Gabimaru and Sagiri need each other if they want to survive on an island that is teaming with strange creatures.

Literal Hell on Earth on the remote island.

They were obvly going to attack each other, it was just a matter of time. Even Gabimaru had to fight against Sagiri, but couldn't deal the finishing blow. Both of them had their own reasons, which is what makes the fight much better and not just a simple one. And we've finally got to see all those weird ahh creatures. The designs in the manga were crazy, and the adaptation is doing a great job so far.

Best looking episode yet, and by far. The show is so colorful now that they're on the island, and the swordplay choreography is masterful. That duel between Gabimaru and Sagiri was so good, and it felt like an incredible resolution to everything that had been built up between them last episode. Loving it.

The island looks so beautiful animated with all the vibrant colors.

Right off the bat another criminal comes to start trouble with Gabimaru, but he was light work. Gabimaru and Sagiri got into it and I like how they showed his inner conflict of him dealing with his emotions after living his entire life as a stone cold killer. Bro got pussy and really changed as a man lol.

The designs of the creatures on this island are something out of a fever dream, Yuji Kaku was on some serious shit when he was creating these monsters lol. Another good episode.
