So I thinking of starting one piece.
Should I read manga or watch anime.
I've access to both version so which should I try.
And what if I choose manga, should I read color or black/white variant.

They are completely different experiences.

Manga is original source, has a faster pace, but anime has a motion, which is great for action scenes, amazing music (especially during emotional scenes), countless high profile voice actors, and it has a color.

Some people may not like a slower pacing, and fillers though, but it what comes in a package.

I tried both, and anime for me all the way.

As an anime-only viewer, I'd recommend reading the manga instead. There will be no fillers and the pace will be faster.

You can't go wrong with either one tbh. The manga is obviously better but people shit too much on the anime.

I personally caught up to the anime and started reading the manga starting from the chapters that hasn't been adapted up to that point
I think a good experience for One Piece is to read the manga up to the latest chapter, watch specific moments (the ones you want to see animated) in the anime and once you're caught up read and watch both
That way you're able to be fully caught up with recent events and also experience everything the anime has to offer
There's no wrong way to go about it
It all comes down to what do you prefer
For better pacing, no fillers, not missing out on the cover stories and being fully caught up, go with the manga
If you're willing to forego good pacing and in turn get amazing animation, voice acting and OST, go with the anime

Manga is better. However, fights are becoming boring lately. Still a good read though

as an anime-only, i suggest you read the manga because the pacing of the anime is so fucking bad.

I suggest to read the manga. I tried to start the anime but I fall asleep in episode 3 because the pacing is atrocious, seriously one chapter per episode... Lord!

Read the manga, the anime adapts 5 PAGES per episode

It really can't be understated how bad the pacing gets later on. With filler, you can at least skip it if you want, but there's no getting around bad pacing unless you speed it up, which I don't like.

The manga is a great experience you can't go wrong with. If you would prefer the additional features of the animated medium, there's a fan project called One Pace that trims out the padding in scenes for a better pacing (of what they've done so far, 45% has been cut). I watched it two years ago and I think it's definitely an improvement on the anime, though I think a couple of spots got cut down a little too much.

The music voice acting and a couple of fights are really well done in the anime so I suggest You watch one pace (a fan edit of one piece anime which takes the anime and fixes the pacing) or you can just read the colored manga
To start there is no problem with the anime since the first few arcs are really well paced, the pacing only becomes bad after a couple 100 episodes.
The manga is nicely paced but thats just it,

How much time do you have? Do you value reading manga as much experience wise as watching something? I mean it all comes down to preference I don't think either way is the wrong way.

While the show is the slower way and yeah it has filler. That said the filler didn't bother me, really compared to a lot of other shounen I have seen it didn't feel like it hurt the experience. Voice actors do a great job of enhancing sad and happy moments. The music also helps emotionally and environmentally, this is a epic journey with a lot of interesting locations and the soundtrack does a good job with that.

Honestly I could go on but like I said both are valid and it really depends on time investment and preference. Wouldn't hurt you to try both and then continue whichever one you like more. A few years ago I started it for the first time and caught up in like 4 months and I didn't regret it.

I actually like the filler eps on OP. They truly add the sense of grand adventure of the series.

Watch the One Piece anime before the time skip, which is somewhere around 500 episodes. Then stick to the manga from there

As someone who watched the anime multiple times and also read the manga: definitely read the manga and don't watch the anime. If you liked a chapter or arc a lot you can watch the anime part of that (there are also movie adaptations of some arcs) but don't bother with everything.

Manga all the way. It has much better pacing, especially when you get to some of the later arcs. I had to drop the anime about halfway through cause I couldn't stand how they would try to prolong every action.

The anime is still good, but watching the one piece anime is practically a full-time job.

I haven't read the manga. But watching anime was like doing a chore. There are unnecessary gaps b\w the scenes only to prolong the series, which makes it boring to watch and, just skip to essential sequences. Like others have said, read manga and watch animations of selected fights.
It is shocking to find how many people do not believe they can learn, and how many more believe learning to be difficult.

As someone who only watched the first ep of One Piece... Read it.

You really see the contrast when you compare One Piece (anime) to some other stuff.
You could either watch One Piece, or watch 90 cours of different Great Animes;
or in other terms, One Piece or the top30 animes on MAL, lol.

If you'd read and enjoy the manga instead of wasting all the unnecessary time with the Anime,
you'd actually save so much time to watch something actually coherent and great... with somewhat better pacing.

Intelligent gets through situations which wise avoids.

I didn't make it, but I think this video does a good job of explaining why reading One Piece is a better idea than watching it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy4hH-GnaIg) mostly per the reasons stated above, but also because it is a lot easier to catch up by reading it rather than watching it. I've only seen and read it occasionally here and there, so I myself probably should not pass judgement.

As an anime only viewer, I'd say watch the anime of course. For one, the action scenes look cooler animated than just seeing still images on panels. IMHO.

I would just go with the manga. Much faster. As I am now, I probably couldn't even start watching the anime anymore. I wouldn't be watching it if I didn't start it like 6 years ago. Way too long, slow paced. Like you could watch something 90 episodes to get to drum island or you could just read about 16 volumes which depending on reading speed, you could very well accomplish in a day. While watching it would require way more. If I were to start reading right now, I could probably catch up to the manga in a month. That is like 4 volumes a day which is for me 3-4 hours. Though with anime, it would take at least 6 months of dedicated watching. The pacing is still okay for the pre timeskip but after it slows down. I would say, read the manga but if you wanna see some fights animated then just watch them in anime form. But during Wano arc, the anime really becomes eye candy. But Dressrosa or Wholecake Island are fucking slow. I barely got through Whole Cake.

You can watch it up to the Thriller Bark or so before the pacing starts to become an issue, but I found it tolerable enough up to the time skip. I would switch to the manga at that point or try One Pace, but that seems to be a divisive topic. You could also just read the manga outright, and check out some of the fights in the anime, I'm sure it's all on YT.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

What are you talking about? The pacing isn't 1 chapter per episode until after the time skip, the first 3 episodes covered 7 chapters.

Read the manga, but the anime is a good companion piece at times. There are certain moments that you'll read in the manga that you should watch the anime scene of. Especially moments with songs, like Bink's Sake. Don't watch the entire anime because it is slow and padded as heck, it had a lot of filler, it doesn't have the best animation sometimes, and it changes some stuff from the manga. It's got a great soundtrack and voice acting though, and some of the openings are nice. As for the moments you should watch the anime of, there's a lot, so you should proably post a new thread that asks that specifically.

Read the manga, the pacing is actually bearable. But if you like animation as a medium more watch the anime, there's really nothing you would lose from experiencing the story this way. Also if you would prefer to read the manga you can just watch the movies, if you care to see the characters animated and voice acted.
